Vancouver's Mike Van Siclen goes deep three times

A pitch from Enoch Mylchreest in the 4th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 412 feet from home plate in left-center. His 2nd blast, a solo homerun off Alex Sancho in the 5th inning, landed an estimated 385 feet from home plate. In the 9th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Benji Cabello. Mike finished 4 for 5, doubling once, scoring three times and collecting 3 RBI. In 152 career at bats, he has hit 8 homeruns and collected 20 RBI.

Shiro Suzuki stars with 200th career hit

DENVER - Shiro Suzuki got a standing ovation from 38,884 fans in Denver, who witnessed his 200th career hit. With no outs in the 8th inning, Shiro drilled a two run homerun, bringing the fans to their feet. Along with his 2000 hits, Shiro collected 227 homeruns and 981 RBI in 10 seasons. "Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled," Suzuki was quoted as saying after his Phoenix Ashes won the game 8-5.

2) Peter Kostka (3-2 (1 SV), 4.09 ERA, 2.31 ERC)

Notes: An injury plagued month that mostly focused the breakout of Mike Van Siclen as an early candidate for Rookie of the Year. In the other conference, Ann Onita is making her case as well with a 4-1 record and a 3.86 ERA to date. Meanwhile, Kostka is struggling along with the two catchers Matthews and Duran, as Corbin struggles to find his groove and Ghandi falls into a slump going into June, commonly known as the June Swoon for some struggling hitters. Hunter is improving slowly, yet surely, and is remaining healthy, which is more than can be said about some of the other hitters.

And I've always wondered, am I Columbus' closer, or more of a setup man?

You're mostly used for middle relief.

By the way, no visits to AAA yet for Kostka, though it does seem as though one could be right around the bend.

Well, Seattle is currently sitting atop the throne of 1st so I'm satisfied. Here's hoping I can at least keep a .280 BA throughout the season now. By the way, what're my steals numbers so far?

Awesome. Still stealing like the ol' days.

And this is my second time saying that as I got shipped back to the freaking forum page again. I'm getting a little tired of that whenever I fast reply.

2) The Berzerker (2-2 (19 SV), 4.05 ERA, 2.66 ERC)

Notes: No injuries this month, and the numbers were considerably better as a result. The Berzerker is having some control problems that has balooned his ERA, but it's nothing too serious at the moment. Ann Onita remains a strong pitcher, along with Marvin Jenkins, who could perhaps be looking for a Rocket Wrist Award by stepping up his performance another notch in the remaining months of the season.

Mike Van Siclen almost seems like a sure thing for Fresh Fish in the North-South, while Logan Caldwell is the real surprise to come out of the TSM pack, capturing the Batter of the Month Award.

And as predicted, Gonzales starts the great sucking cycle.

Well, I'll soon be cueing up Tiny Gonzales' stats. Or perhaps a Villano. Whatever I feel like at the time, I suppose.

But really, damn do I suck this year. And Atlanta overall. At least there won't be any drama about Atlanta having a tiny sliver of hope. Might as well prepare for the offseason, unless we make a turn around. If so, I shall readily jump back on the wagon. Huzzah!

Nothing can stay gold, Ponyboy.

With Giant at a ripe 35 years old, he is heading into the home stretch of his career, but compared to his earlier stuff in the minor leagues, he is doing very well for himself.

Also, with four more wins Giant will have 100 in his career, very good for a man who wasn't pulling in regular starts with a team until 2007.

Caldwell is PISSED.

Whoa, how random to see you.

Get Big Red's person in here (Rob E Dangerously) too, so he can see how awesomely his player has been doing.

Both Caldwell and Henderson are on pace for 50+ homeruns, and the sky's the limit if one of them has a second half surge in homeruns (could possibly beat the SFBL record of 62)

Well, I was always lurking, but I was just too pissed at Detroit's "forever third place" performance to make a comment about how well Caldwell had been doing in a particular year.

The Game

Mike Cannington's solo homerun with one out in the top of the eighth was just enough to give the North-South a 5-4 victory over the East-West in the SFBL All-Star Game.

After building a 4-1 lead in the first three innings with RBIs from Neall Isaacson, Carlos DeSantis, J.C. Morello, and Robert Henderson, North-South pitcher "Let's Get" Tipsy Gesner surrendered a three-run homerun to Gerard Allen with one out, tying the game up at four-all after four.

The next three innings, the bats were silent as the game simply marched on. Finally, Cannington's solo homerun was the game-winning run, earning him the SFBL All-Star Game MVP award for his 2-for-2 performance, scoring once and driving in one run while being walked twice.

Mike Van Siclen hit a triple in the 2nd inning with two outs, scoring twice in his 2-for-3 performance, before Shimetarou Naoki pinch-hit in his place. Carlos DeSantis went 1-for-5 in his 8th All-Star Game, scoring once and driving in a run.

Robert Henderson went 1-for-5 with a walk, but Logan Caldwell ended up on the short end of things, shut down by the East-West pitchers all night as he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.

Shiro Suzuki pinch-hit for Manny Donato, but did not get a hit. Edward James went 1-for-2, walking once and scoring once, along with picking up a stolen base by barely beating the throw from J.C. Morello to second baseman Neall Isaacson.

Marvin Jenkins was not brought in from the bullpen.

Okay, so I am in the main event of SWF Battleground, and I'll generally be expected to either write a really good short match or something around 10,000 words.

For that reason, it should be reasonable not to expect an SFBL update until after Sunday, when the match should be complete.

Here's what's to expect sometime next week (unless I get my match done early, in which case this will be coming up this weekend):

1. SFBL Update: July 2013

-- The second half begins, and we see if the amazing seasons of rookies Mike Van Siclen and Ann Onita can continue, and if the SFBL standings have taken a turn for the better for some teams. Who will come on top on the South after July? We will find out soon.

2. Blowouts: The biggest winning margins this year

-- A list of the ten biggest winning margins of the season are right around the corner. You won't believe what is at the top of the list, and the poor team that suffered because of it.

3. By The Numbers: Logan Caldwell

-- A 35-game hitting streak tied the record for North-South batters. I will profile these 35 amazing games as Caldwell went on an absolute tear, rallying the Detroit fans around the DMV team in July as they struggled to climb back up in the standings and compete with the first place Columbus Pride.

4. Record Watch

-- If any TSM players are on the verge of breaking records in the record book for either the East-West, North-South, or TSM record books, they'll be listed here.

Awards/SFBL Players In The News:

Edward James and Robert Henderson win Player of the Week award

Las Vegas' third baseman Edward James had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the East-West Player of the Week. He hit .526 with 10 RBI and slugged 1.263 in 19 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 9 games. It's the 7th time that the North-South Player of the Week award goes to Columbus' leftfielder Robert Henderson. In 22 at bats he hit .500 with 2 HR and 6 RBI. His season numbers are: .365 AVG, 114 hits, 18 doubles, 4 triples and 24 longballs, along with 72 RBI and 73 runs scored. He's 2nd in the North-South in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 3rd in RBI!

Shiro Suzuki parks three against New York

NEW YORK - Shiro Suzuki was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Phoenix to a 9-6 win over New York by homering three times. A pitch from Frederick Mcconnell in the 1st inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 445 feet from home plate in left field. A 411 foot drive to left-center marked his 2nd bomb, a solo homerun off Nicanor Cabello in the 7th inning. Number 3 in the 9th inning, a shot estimated at 374 feet, cleared the wall in left field. Shiro got 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring three times and collecting 4 RBI.

Las Vegas' James wins Player of the Week award

Las Vegas' third baseman Edward James had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the East-West Player of the Week. James helped his team with an average of .385 and 10 RBI in 26 at bats.

Carlos DeSantis collects 2000th career hit

ATLANTA - Atlanta's first baseman Carlos DeSantis was in a good mood after the game against Memphis, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 200th career hit. His hit in the 7th inning was a single off Rafael Calderon. His best year so far was 2010 where he hit .381 with 39 homeruns and 140 RBI. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank God I'm blessed with the talent to play this game,' DeSantis said in a press conference following the game.

Henderson wins Player of the Week Award

The North-South Player of the Week award goes to Robert Henderson, Columbus' starting leftfielder. Robert was on fire, hitting .500 with 3 HR and 8 RBI. He has hit 28 bombs while batting .344 this season. His 136 hits and 33 walks add up to a .396 on-base percentage. He's 2nd in the North-South in batting, 5th in homeruns and 4th in runs batted in!

2) Eric LeBeau (11-9, 3.42 ERA, 3.09 ERC)

3) Ann Onita (10-3, 3.63 ERA, 3.31 ERC)

4) Giant Gonzales (6-11, 5.26 ERA, 4.20 ERC)

Relievers:

1) The Berzerker (2-2 (30 SV), 3.18 ERA, 1.87 ERC)

2) Peter Kostka (5-2 (2 SV), 3.82 ERA, 2.50 ERC)

Notes: Once again, no injuries this month, but the month was shortened because of the All-Star Break, which explains why the stats or so low for this month's batters.

The Berzerker has emerged as one of the premier relief pitchers in the East-West this year, leading the conference with 30 saves. Marvin Jenkins' 2.47 ERA is the 2nd lowest in the East-West, while Ann Onita continues to pitch well, despite having a below-average ERA--the run support is there for Ichiban.

Patrick Hannon and rookie Mike Van Siclen continue to amaze, the former having a breakout year in Houston after living in mediocrity for the first few years of his career.

Kostka continues to avoid the minors, but there's still one month left to go before he can finally say that he survived a season without being demoted to the minors. His numbers are solid enough for a Columbus middle reliever, and with Columbus on top in the North by 7 games over Chicago, well...if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Speaking of things that are broke, I'll be looking into a more balanced schedule next year that doesn't take such a big chunk of July out of the calendar and affect the stats so greatly in that certain month.

Also, expansion continues to cross my mind, though I'm not sure when we'll go through with it. The rough plan is four teams in three divisions among the two conferences, but I'm still trying to work out the kinks in the plan and figure out a time when it would be best to expand (perhaps once the first member of the TSM first wave retires?)

Coming up: A look at the biggest winning margins of the year, Logan Caldwell's amazing 35-game hitting streak, and keeping track of who's close to what record.
