RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ A high school teacher was hospitalized after a 15-year-old student allegedly knocked her down, then repeatedly kicked and hit her, school officials said.

 

LaVerne Hamlin, a 32-year teaching veteran, was taken by ambulance to VCU Medical Center, where she was treated, Richmond schools spokeswoman Treeda R. Smith said.

 

The student was charged with aggravated assault and taken to the Richmond Juvenile Detention Center. He also has been suspended pending a hearing before a school-system panel, Smith said.

 

The incident occurred Friday afternoon at Armstrong High School when Hamlin tried to take a classroom telephone from the student, according to a school incident report. Hamlin, who teaches physics and biology at the school, asked the student to end his conversation three times, and he refused, the report said.

 

"We are very concerned about (Hamlin) and her family," Smith said. "This is the kind of thing that upsets us all. It hurts the entire Richmond public schools family."

 

Hamlin received the Exemplary High School Teacher Award from the National Science Teachers Association and Ciba Specialty Chemicals Foundation last spring.

The teacher was right to try and take the phone. You shouldn't have those things in class. Hell, in my old high school, if you were caught with one, it was taken away untill the end of the year.

He put a woman in the hospital for having the nerve to actually demand his respect. At the LEAST he should be expelled and criminal charges brought against him.

 

I hope the teacher sues his family for all it's worth. If it's worth anything at all.

 

Talking on a phone during class is an ultimate dick move. There's one law professor at my school who has a rule about it: if your phone so much as rings in class, the first time is just a warning. Second time, you're excused for the day.

 

If it happens a third time? Automatic F for your grade.

This attack was totally unprovoked and is disgusting. She didn't take the phone from him at first, she asked THREE times. I have the feeling that this teacher is a nice person who is liked by most of her students. Just a feeling. This guy needs a swift ass-kicking.

when I was in Middle School some kid who had stayed back a few years in his lifetime pushed a very well liked English teacher down 2 flights of stairs. The english teacher suffered a broken leg, broken collarbone, both arms broke and he broke a bone in his neck. Well some of the people that liked him alot were the police and after they dragged him off (using excessive force than what they needed to at that point) we never heard from him again

My high school had this one substitute teacher who was also a guard at a nearby juvenile detention center, as well as a part time indy worker. Dude was friggin' huge. Kind of an asshole, and a terrible teacher, but he did some good things, he'd always scare the fuck out of the kids that were always causing trouble, or intimidate the kids that intimidated others...fuck with the little bastards, pretty much.
