Anakin Flair 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2003 Ok, So I'm at work takeing claims, and I look up to the TV that shows CNN and I see a story about a girl getting expelled from school. I get curiuous as to why, and I search all over the CNN website for a story, to no avail. The Next time it rools around I struggle to read the closed captioning, and what I can make out is that this girl wrote a fictional story which involved kids getting killed at school, and for that she was expelled. This piques my interest especially due to the fact that Someone on this board (whose naem escapes me at the moment) was expelled for nearly the same reason(writng a story involving grisly death of people who were named after fellow students). I was wondering A.)if anybody had more info on this story and B.) what are your thoughts on it? Is it going to far to expell someone for writing fictional stories involving death, even if it takes place at a school?
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2003 It's not going too far because you're an idiot for doing it in the first place. Who benefits from writing such a story? Nobody. Yet if you ask yourself if doing so might raise a bit of controversy, the answer is yes.

Is it going to far to expell someone for writing fictional stories involving death, even if it takes place at a school? One time, I wrote a story about zombies invading my school and killing the students. It was like Resident Evil 2 at school. I was writing it because I wanted to write a scary story. My teacher saw it, took it, and read my story. Se thought it was good, but said I should not put the setting in a school. I tore it up, thinking it was going to come true, since I set it a week after I wrote it. All of this was in the 5th grade.

Anakin Flair 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2003 I'm not entirely sure- I can't find any info. Apparently she was expelled on Wednesday, and re-instated on Monday. And the story was about a student that dreamed of killing his/her classmates, or soemthing to that effect.
Guest stardust Report post Posted October 25, 2003 The poster you're thinking of is The Decadant Slacker, Naitch. As for the story...considering how jumpy school districts are nowadays when it comes to violence and such, it isn't exactly the smartest decision she could have made to write that story and show it to anyone else. If she had just written it and not shown it to anyone, that's one thing, but showing it to someone opened up a whole other can of worms. I hate the idea of suppressing anyone's freedom of speech, but at the same time, schools do have the right and the duty to protect their students while they're in school (even if this girl had no intention of causing any harm, just news of a story like this can cause panic in a public school system, which in turn can create a bit of a domino effect of less than welcome events). Granted, expelling her may have been a bit drastic, they probably just should have pulled her into the office and had the school counselor talk to her or something. Hell, expelling a student is more likely to piss them off even more and just add more fuel to the fire.
Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2003 Meh... Writing stuff like that is nothing, compared to the iffy I had once. I almost got expelled from my high school (grade 5 was tossed into our high school, it's a small town that I was in grade 5). All I did was bring a Xanth book to school (Xanth is a series of books done by Piers Anthony). I had the book taken away from me as I was told by my teacher that I should not have such an illicit (wrong word probably) book. I was then sent down to the office and was actually told to go home, with suspension or possible expulsion TBD. Told them my mother had given me the book, but they didn't believe me. Needless to say, I went home, told my mother, she literially raised hell and high water to get me back into school. Then she demanded her book back and was absolutely furious. ...heheh... Then she let me take whatever fantasy novel I wanted to read to school... So stuff like the writing doesn't surprise me at all. Schools are just really, really, fucking stupid. And needless to say, I don't really care much for teachers either. Thankfully, glad the girl is back in school. If I knew more, I probably wouldn't be as judgemental of her getting back in, but happy she is for now. Edit: Yes, you didn't really need to hear this little side story, but I thought it appropriately fit the stupidity of schools as of late. And as of my experience. Guest Choken One Report post Posted October 25, 2003 Fucking Columbine kids made school boring and shit... We used to actively have "Who would you kill" debates in class and teachers names ALWAYS came up and no one raised a stink at all...I wrote countless stories about Sex, Drugs, Violence and shit and no one cared Uptight schools. Guest The Old Me Report post Posted October 25, 2003 I could maybe see suspending the kid for using students names and murdering them. But not getting expelled for writing a general story where kids get murdered in a school.
Guest stardust Report post Posted October 25, 2003 I just saw it on Headline news, and it happened in Georgia. And if you saw this girl...my first thought was "she doesn't look like she would be a danger to society..."
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2003 From CNN: (Article at the end of my post, and it was posted at 1 a.m., so that might be why you couldn't find it.) Personally I don't find anything wrong with what she did, nor would I have had a problem if a teacher that read this arranged to have a talk with this student and a counselor just to make sure there wasn't something bothering her. Now if she used names or likenesses of the people that were killed in her story as real-life students/teachers in her school, then that might be a different story. And I got in trouble several times when writing about teachers in my high school creative writing class, and it had NOTHING to do with killing them... ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A high school freshman expelled for writing a fictional account of a student who falls asleep in class and dreams of killing a teacher can return to school Monday while officials reconsider the disciplinary action. Rachel Boim, 14, who lived in the Denver area at the time of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado, that left 15 dead, was expelled Wednesday from Roswell High School in this Atlanta suburb under the Fulton County School District's "zero tolerance" policy. Rachel said Friday her story was not intended as a threat -- it was strictly a work of fiction -- and her father, David Boim, said he would challenge the decision as a violation of "the right to think and feel." He said he understands the concerns of school administrators about even the most remote possible threats to teachers and other students, but "we also expected common sense to kick in at some point." "A piece of literature is a piece of literature," David Boim said. "The question I asked the administrators the first day is, 'You're going to suspend my daughter because of something she wrote?'" Rachel wrote the story in her personal journal and was showing it to a classmate. Her art teacher noticed, confiscated it and turned it over to school officials the next day. "It was a story about a girl who falls asleep in class, dreams she kills her math teacher, then wakes up and nothing happens," she said. Rachel was suspended her for 10 days for "inappropriate writings that describe the threat of bodily harm toward a school employee," school system spokeswoman Susan Hale told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and she was expelled after a hearing her father described as a travesty. However, Hale said Friday that acting school superintendent Mike Vanairsdale temporarily rescinded the expulsion and Rachel will be allowed to return to class Monday. Hale said Vanairsdale will review the case and then recommend to the Fulton County Board of Education on whether to reinstate the expulsion. "The interim superintendent, just came into office last night and wants to make sure he has all the facts in the case," Hale said. Rachel said she plans to stay at Roswell High if allowed to. "I have a lot of really good friends that go to Roswell," she said.
Guest The Decadent Slacker Report post Posted October 25, 2003 WHOO! Granted, my overall circumstances of dismissal were more political & revenge motivated, but the point is people suck. Unlike this girl, i was given consent by those involved, & was only expelled when I accidently betrayed the trust of one of them. However, since all of that shit put me on the shores of greatness the people of this piddly town will never see, it helped me in the long run. Hell, I'm over my ordeal, & hope this girl gets over hers yet still is able to use her gift for the further good of mankind...since i'll be writing total shit. What pisses me off is I NEVER was on CNN. She gets reinstated(possibly) & is featured on TV. I get booted, chased by a lynch mob, rebound & am heralded a martyr by the sad & lowly, & i get shit. I'm sure none of you care, but it's a TRAVESTY.

Guest The Decadent Slacker Report post Posted October 25, 2003 Giving that it was nearly 6 months ago, i'm amazed. I blame sexism. Why? They expect 6'5 bearded guys to snap & kill people, not 14 year old Georgian chicks. It's based on the interest the story would create as opposed to the reality of the situation that actually occurs. Had she been a guy, the fun would be gone. Besides, I'm in CA: everyone knows what a fucking joke we are. I don't really care about CNN. I just am amused. Damaramu 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2003 People in school always seem to get pissy over stupid things. When I was in 5th grade(this was 9 years ago mind you) I drew a picture for my DARE Officer that was promoting DARE. It was a picture saying no to drugs and alcohol. And then my teacher sees it and despite the fact that it is CLEARLY anti-drug says "That promotes drugs and alcohol throw it away or I'm going to take you to the principal's office!" I was pissed. I'd worked hard on it to. I'm going to find out where that bitch lives and show up drinking a 40 and smoking a joint and say "Remember that picture I drew? Well it promoted drugs and alcohol to me! And now I'm a lush!"
Guest TheGame2705 Report post Posted October 25, 2003 I wrote a story in 7th grade about some kids talking to Satan through a mirror. Needless to say the guidance counselor thought I was crazy.
