Student expelled for story

Recommended Posts

In high school journalism courses, the case is often simply referred to as Hazlewood.

is Hazelwood the name of the school district it was in? Cause I go to school in that district

Our school doesn't have any black clubs, but it has a Christian Athelete club. I'mma try to start an Athelete club for some other relgion, any ideas? Buddhist? Jewish? Does Athiest count?

The black clubs really start appearing in college more than anywhere.

Okay, I'll be equal opportunity offensive here

A "Society of White Engineers" would try to build one of the following:

- Magic dancing shoes ("Never embarass yourself on the dancefloor again")

- Magic basketball shoes ("Now we really can be like Mike")

- Efficient coke snorting mechanism ("Tired of losing cocaine in your cheap plastic straw? Try the Snortinator")

This thread is discriminatory and I'm offended...

<starts a rally with KKK to boycott whatever the hell BananaramaDamaru produces>

Who's BananramaDamaru? His names pretty close to mine....I'm sueing for copyright infringement.

Silence, Damaramashamalamadingdong...

...Damaramachingchangwallawallabingbang...

...DamaramaJoeyJoJoShabadoo...

Whatever the fuck your name is, we're boycotting

What do I produce? I wanna know if it's even worth boycotting.

update from CNN:

Girl expelled for journal entry changes school

From Deanna Hackney

CNN

Thursday, October 30, 2003 Posted: 4:13 PM EST (2113 GMT)

Rachel Boim was expelled from school after writing a fictional account of a student who falls asleep in class and dreams of killing a teacher.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A 14-year-old student disciplined for writing a fictional account of a student who falls asleep in class and dreams of killing a teacher is moving to another school, her father told CNN Thursday.

Rachel Boim will no longer be attending Roswell High School, in a suburb north of Atlanta, because it would be too much for her to cope with, David Boim said.

The father did not say where Rachel will attend, saying his daughter needs to put this situation behind her and "just be a 14-year-old girl" and "live the life of a regular 14-year-old," Boim said.

Susan Hale, Fulton County Schools spokeswoman, said the school administration wishes her well and "wants what's best for the student" so she can have a fresh start.

Rachel was expelled last week from Roswell High School under the Fulton County School District's "zero tolerance" policy.

She was then permitted to attend school Monday while officials reconsidered the disciplinary action.

"Rachel went on Monday, she stayed home on Tuesday, and on Wednesday we officially withdrew her," David Boim said. "She is having a very difficult time dealing with the expulsion, with all the media attention. She is just a 14-year-old girl."

The girl wrote the story in her personal journal and was showing it to a classmate. Her art teacher noticed, confiscated it, read it and turned it over to school officials the next day. Rachel said the writing was strictly a work of fiction and not intended as a threat.

Rachel was negatively affected by the way the school handled her removal, her father said.

"[she was removed] from her second-period biology class -- with an armed officer," Boim said. "They had the option of calling us, of asking us to come in with Rachel to talk about the situation, but instead they had an armed guard take her out of class."

When asked about Rachel being escorted out of her classroom by an armed guard, Hale said that is not an uncommon process, and the guard could have been acting as an escort rather than responding to a perceived security threat.

"We do have, at all of our high schools and middle schools, a guard and they are armed. It is not uncommon to provide an escort to the student when they are pulled out of class, and it's not necessarily for security reasons," Hale said.

After her suspension, Rachel fell behind academically, and her father said the hearing on the matter, the expulsion and the extensive media coverage proved stressful for her.

"You can imagine," he said. "This is a lot for an adult. Imagine what it's like for a teenager."

Hale noted that Rachel always had the opportunity to switch schools, saying that she was expelled only from Roswell High and could have immediately resumed her studies at any other county high school.

A pre-school conference was set up between administrators and Boim's parents to assure that everything would go smoothly for Rachel's return on Monday, Hale said.

"I understand it was a very normal school day," Hale said. "She was greeted by her friends. Everything went well."

What a dumb statement. Does he realise how hard it is to leave EVERYTHING and EVERYBODY you knew behind and start over somewhere else? Dumb prick.

Yes, Hazelwood was the school district (in St. Louis, MO). For anyone curious about the case, you can read up on it here or if you're interested in reading the Supreme Court opinion on the case, you can go here.

Here's what I don't get. My future niece-in-law was busted getting drunk in school and she got a light suspension. I've seen/read of fights that became near riots, and there were no expulsions.

And this girl gets expelled/switches schools for THIS?...

It's easier to lower the boom on one or a few people than it is to punish a mob. It's why people like to riot, they can cause shit and more often than not, use the 'mob mentality' defense to get away with it.

I help out at my Temple's snack shop during the week, and this sixth grade girl told me how she got suspended for kicking a guy in the face. Her reason? He was an asshole. I'm sure there's more to it than that, though.

Funny thing is, back in my day, I was in a fight with a guy who tried to steal something of mine. I inadvertantly(sp?) stabbed him in the thumb with a pencil, and he punched me. Our punishment? One weeks In School suspension.

Sad how far punishments have come...

Sad thing is you're right.

A few years back Sappy Valley had a huge riot during their annual arts festival. It was funny watching the punk-ass college students that got caught whine about how they were victims because they got caught up in the moment, or some other lame excuse.

And then some pointy-headed academics were trying to make up excuses to this behavior.

Too bad they weren't in the middle of these mobs and didn't get torn limb from limb...

The decision upheld the right of public high school administrators at Hazelwood  East High

Crap, I go to East. The fact that it happened here does NOT surprise me.

How is it that you go to this high school and you didn't know about this case? It seems like something people would at least mention once in a while, seeing as how it was a landmark case in establishing the boundaries for First Amendment rights of students in high schools. I'm not trying to be condescending or anything, either, just curious.

it sounded familiar, so it's not like I knew nothing of it, I probably heard about it a while ago, but nobody I know of has mentioned it in the 2.5 years I've been going there, and I don't care enough about what went on in the school before I got there to look into it. So it's pretty easy to not have known about it. Especially if you go to the school, apparently

I was just curious. I'm willing to bet that the only high school students who really care about it anyway are those on the newspaper staff and who actually take being on the newspaper staff seriously.
