Think about it, if Benoit could open his mouth and say ANYTHING don't you think he'd have gotten that much dreamed of title reign? When's the last time you saw a mark buy a Benoit T-Shirt over an Angle one? He doesn't connect with non-smarks. There's a reason he was called a vanilla midget. Even Malenko was a better wrestler than Benoit, but everybody seems to forget about him.

Then I guess that's the reason he gets crickets chirping when his music hits and draws little when he's on the screen. Oh wait, that doesn't happen. What was his number in the segment ratings thing that Meltzer did? 311,000+ or something? Higher than nearly anyone else in his spot?

  Vince had already been the "Mr. McMahon" character before that and Rock was essentially a lackey midcarder that he used to get the IC Title off of Austin.

 

"Mr. McMahon" didn't happen until around WM14 when he was saying that he didn't want Austin as Champ because he didn't fit the corporate image. This was Austin's first reign.

A Champ has to be able to connect on a nightly basis. Not just against Angle. Who, by the way, was a major factor in that match being good.

Yes they happened. But my whole point, which everyone has been avoiding is that Austin's major feud before all this was with Rock. You don't just become a Main Eventer without being built up first. And Rock and Austin were both used to build up each other.

That's exactly what I said. The screwjob was just the push to get fans to hate him. He didn't rely on the screwjob to get him over, it just happened that way. He didn't start becoming a major dick until around WM14. Don't you remember the interview Cole had with him in the middle of the ring and he asked him point blank if he would like Austin as Champ and he said "Oh hell NO!" That's what I'm talking about.
