Mik Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 P: Mike Mussina (Yankees) C: Bengie Molina (Angels) 1b: John Olerud (Mariners) 2b: Bret Boone (Mariners) SS: A-Rod (Rangers) 3B: Eric Chavez (A's) OF: Ichiro (Mariners) OF: Mike Cameron (Mariners) OF: Torii Hunter (Twins) 4/9 isn't too shabby. If there was justice, the same would happen to the Marlins tomorrow. (Derek Lee, Castillo, A-Gone, Pudge)
Guest FrigidSoul Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 I bet Furcal gets Gold Glove for SS in the NL, and rightfully so.
Vern Gagne Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Nice to see the whoever votes puts alot of consideration into voting. Everyone but Mussina (who has one before), and maybe Cameron (who has won before) is a repeat winner.
Guest Smues Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 They fixed it, but for awhile on mlb.com it said Torri Hunter was a Marnier, that was funny. I'm just hoping Maddux keeps his streak of gold gloves when the NL is announced tommorow.
Guest Smues Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Edit: Double post. Sorry bout that. Fucking Comcast.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 I looked into what Win Shares ranked as the best fielders. Its not a perfect method, but its the best statistical method out there. C- Ramon Hernandez 1B- John Olerud 2B- Orlando Hudson SS- Jose Valentin 3B- Eric Chavez OF- Mike Cameron, Torii Hunter, Carlos Beltran A few points here. First off, Molina led by rate, but misses out because he missed time in September. Had he played more, he would've led all catchers. John Olerud's leading first basemen is an indicator that his winning the gold glove is legit. Ichiro led among right fielders. Carlos Beltran is easily the most unheralded star in the majors.
Vern Gagne Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Let me guess this is fielding % and errors more than anything. What about range, what about balls picked out of the dirt, the number of throwing errors saved? If you saw Dougie M everynight scooping Koskie or Guzman's throw out of the dirt, you'd understand why this bothers me. Honestly it's not Olerud, he's good. But Dougie M is so much better in terms of doing more things well with the glove.
Guest Choken One Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 So which red will be gglover? Oh yeah we suck. I forgot.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 The voting is done by the players in each league. Rules are you can only vote for players in the league you play in and you can't vote for team-mates.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Let me guess this is fielding % and errors more than anything. What about range, what about balls picked out of the dirt, the number of throwing errors saved? The full explanation runs around a hundred pages or so. The gist of it is this. Fielding statistics such as assists and double plays are essentially worthless because bad teams look just as good as good teams, because you always get 24-27 outs regardless of your performance. Win Shares starts with a team's runs allowed total, divides them between pitching and fielding, and breaks down the fielding between individual fielders. Its not a perfect system, but its better than most of what's out there.
OldSchoolWrestling Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Barry Bonds wins quite often and he is always half assing it out there. There is no justice.
Bored Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Well I'm the last person to defend Bonds but he hasn't won a gold glove since '98 and he was at one time a great defensive outfielder.
Vern Gagne Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 I really don't think the players should vote. They may hold grudges, which might of cost Mientwicz the award. He can be outspoken at times, and has had words with opponents.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 Let's nip this one in the bud. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1654701 Gold Gloves, presented since 1957 by St. Louis-based Rawlings, are voted on by managers and coaches before the end of the regular season. They may not select players on their own teams, and they vote only for players in their own league.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 I was close, I knew the gist of it

starvenger Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 And here I thought that Doc Halladay was going to run the gauntlet and pick up all the AL pitcher awards...
Vern Gagne Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 Shhh...Don't tell all the Canadians, Halladay didn't win the Gold Glove, their likely to riot.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 Shhh...Don't tell all the Canadians, Halladay didn't win the Gold Glove, their likely to riot. Since most of them don't care about baseball and are occupied with the Maple Leafs(in Toronto that is) if you were to tell one of them that they would look at you funny and say "There's no Gold Glove in Hockey, aye"
starvenger Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 Since most of them don't care about baseball and are occupied with the Maple Leafs(in Toronto that is) if you were to tell one of them that they would look at you funny and say "There's no Gold Glove in Hockey, aye" What, are we Canadians sailors now? It's "eh", not "aye", dammit...
Mik Posted November 6, 2003 Author Report Posted November 6, 2003 Looking at those stats that Bored posted, methinks Garret Anderson got robbed.
Vern Gagne Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 LF is considered to be the easiest defensive position in the OF. They really have to stand out to win Gold Gloves.
