Guest Choken One Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 Maddux in his decline is still better then 75% of today's players in their "prime". I wouldn't mind taking Maddux but not his hefty contract unless he had a remergence as a pitcher. Maddux isn't under contract at all. He's a free agent. I know... I'm just saying he might have a high asking price so unless he wisely lowers his asking price I wouldn't risk it but if you could get him to cut down from his 15 million to let's say HALF that...you'd be a fool NOT to take him.
The Czech Republic Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 Maybe New York can take Shawn Estes off our hands. I'm stifling laughter.
LooseCannon25 Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 Atlanta won't let Maddux go. If they paid $15 million for him last year, they'll pay a smaller price to keep him on board. I doubt that buddy.........John Smoltz himself said he highly doubts Maddux, Lopez or Sheffield will be back next year.

That's about $32 million in salary - that's a huge chunk of cash, especially considering Castilla (4 million per) and Reynolds ($3 mil) are gone too. I see Lopez definitely moving on, with Sheffield being a 60/40 chance getting him back...and again, I don't see Maddux leaving. Total team salary: $99,195,593 Lopez, Maddux, Sheffield: $32,750,000

I'd be SHOCKED if he makes more than $8 million. Last year showed that teams are unwilling to spend massive amounts of money on unsure talent. Looking over baseball-reference.com however, Maddux doesn't look so bad. Of the top 10 most similar pitchers of his age, 8 pitched effectively for a few more seasons. Personally, I'd spend around $5 million for Maddux, but no more.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted November 6, 2003 Author Report Posted November 6, 2003 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1655309 Similar to the Wells scenario I discussed earlier. Trevor Hoffman had his $10 Million option declined, and then resigned with the San Diego Padres for a low base salary. Great news for the Padres as they keep their closer at a substanstial discount.
