2GOLD 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2003 Do they forget where Derek Jeter, Maraino Rivera and Soriano came from?? They spent more than others to obtain the rights to negotiate with Soriano and Rivera, so technically those players are bought and paid for as well. Also when Jeter was drafted he said he wouldn't play for any team other than the Yankees, so other teams didn't bother with him...but ya, he was drafted by them. Only true prospects to come from the Yanks farm system are Jeter, Posada, Pettitte, and Nick Johnson. Well Pettitte and Nick Johnson are gone so there ya go Well, it's not shocking since they have seemingly ripped the heart out of the farm system going after guys like Jeff Weaver. I'm not against them spending the cash, but it just seems like the Yankees are becoming nothing more than a team of hired guns instead of a tradition. I hate the Yankees, but I'd play for them in a second. Now...some of the mystique just feels like it is slowly slipping away cause it's nothing more than gunslingers coming in for a season or two then leaving. I liked Jeter cause he was more of a home grown Yankee. Granted, I also dislike him cause he is a Yankee.

2GOLD 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2003 What are my options? A world Series this year and possibly nothing for the next five years or... Nothing this year and possibly nothing for the next five? Ask Baltimore how that buying hired guns thing worked out in the end. Plus, baseball seems to be a changing landscape. Speed and young pitching seems to be the thing that is getting the ring. I mean, who in the hell have any of us really known on the last two World champions? You keep the team intact, you don't make any big name trades at the trade deadline and you let your team grow together.

Nothing this year and possibly nothing for the next five? Ask Baltimore how that buying hired guns thing worked out in the end. Every case is different. You keep the team intact, you don't make any big name trades at the trade deadline and you let your team grow together. Yeah, that sounds like a long drawn out process. If they can get this whole "gelling and growing together" business over with by next October, I'm all for it. I'm not particularly fond of sacrificing a year (2004 and possibly longer) because maybe if they do that they could possibly maybe almost be World Champions again by 2008. Yes, I know it's a necessary evil but I can still bitch about it.

2GOLD 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2003 Yeah, that sounds like a long drawn out process. If they can get this whole "gelling and growing together" business over with by next October, I'm all for it. That's just it...teams CAN get that done. The Marlins essentially got that done this year by not making any big name deals at the trade deadline. Hell, even the Yankees did it right until they chased down Armando Long Ball from the Mets. Even the most minor player can be huge down the stretch for teams.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted December 11, 2003 I guess the marlins prove that anything is possible, but in My humble opinion, the Yankee Team that we see now in it's current state simply can't win it all. Getting that dead weight off the pitching staff is a good move, but we also lost some key guys, and we still have a pitching staff that is, uhm, injury prone is a nice way to put it. Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted December 11, 2003 Sportscaster on my TV said the A-Rod to Boston deal is 95% done due to Nomar and his agent pissing off and insulting John Henry, then when they went and offered Nomar a contract over the weekend 4 years $51mill he turned it down. Only thing keeping the trade from going down is the Player Union revuing A-Rod's contract to make sure he isn't giving back money(the options can be killed but he can not give back money). I haven't checked sonsofsamhorn.com but the sportscaster just said Curt Schilling went online to say he believes the A-Rod deal is done as well. Rumors are also going on that the Phillies have entered the bidding for Nomar by offering Bobby Abreau and Jimmy Rollins. That's all I got

For some reason I get the picture of alkeiper throwing something around the room at this rumor. I have just come to associate him and Abreu. I would hope they have some plan to replace the RFer. coughVladcough Hey, at this point their budget is shot anyway.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted December 12, 2003 If the Yankees got Sheffield and the Sox got Vlad this would officially become the funniest season of my lifetime. Let's be honest here, how many teams are actually trying to make a run at the championship this season? 5? 10? anyway, here are 10 Non-ARod's who could be traded this weekend. ps - he's a little late on Kevin Brown by the way. pps - God bless Stark for backing my Trade or Release All White Sox plan. That's all I got Nomar's agent must be fucking stupid. $51 Mil per 4 years is roughly $12.75 Mil per year! If Abreu could just cut down on his strikeouts he'd a be a damn good player. He has a career .306 BA, .409 OBP and .513 SLG. Rollins is a solid defensive player who is decent offensively. I personally am not that high on this deal however Abreu would likely be just as good as Nomar offensively and can run a little bit more. I'd prefer the Sox tried to go after somebody other then Rollins though since they would likely have A-Rod at SS.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2003 For some reason I get the picture of alkeiper throwing something around the room at this rumor. I have just come to associate him and Abreu. First I've seen the rumor, but I'm not throwing stuff around the room, yet. It wouldn't be historically bad in any way, as Garciaparra can hit, and its easier to find a quality right fielder. Personally, I think the trade is unnecessary more than anything. I stand by my position that Abreu is hugely under-appreciated. I'd like to go back to the Dan Plesac retirement for a moment. Few people will make a HOF case for Plesac, and I wouldn't vote him in myself. Still, most people don't realize how good Plesac was. His K/9 IP rate is better than any other reliever in baseball history, and 8th best of all time. Plesac struck out batters more frequently than Roger Clemens. In any case, Plesac gave the Phillies a heck of a final season. Enjoy your retirement.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2003 I would like to see the deal go down for two reasons a.) like you said it is easier to find a RF and b.) I have just come to despise Jimmy Rollins. I would assume that if this was the deal Boston would move J-Rol (one of the reasons I hate him is that fucking nickname) to 2B? Unless they (Nomar and Boston) are at such odds that they would trade him regardless of Arod getting done.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2003 I imagine they'd move him to 2B. I don't see it making sense from the Red Sox side however. Rollins is a damned good defensive shortstop. Moving him neutralizes his greatest asset.
HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2003 Keep in mind that Boston also has to offer arbitration to David Ortiz, Trot Nixon and a few others by the end of next week IIRC.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted December 12, 2003 David Ortiz is getting a contract extension worked out, thus far I've heard 2 years $6mill with a 3rd year option. He's got the same agent as Pedro so if you're gonna tie up Pedro might as well tie up Ortiz while you're at it

JasonX 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2003 Its all about winning now and fuck the future I'll take it over "Gurantee losing now but hopefully be better in five years" Where to begin at mocking and belittling you and your lack of logic and reason....... The Yankees, under the current roster format, has reached it's zenith and is now crashing and burning because of the fact that after so many years the signs of weakness are showing and that the copetition is getting MUCH MUCH stronger. The Yankees NEED, NO HAVE TO rebuild. Their time has come and gone and it's starting to show that the team's dynamics can't keep up. Better to junk the whole thing and rebuild with certain surviving members of the roster as the lynchpen for a 2-4 seasons worth of rebuilding and come out stronger and economically slimmer than throw money at the problem like a retard. Signing and trading for every free agent/big name player possible (and some just to keep others from getting them) is counterproductive. You gut the farm system and load up the roster with a bunch of overpayed albatrosses who more than likely won't be worth the money your paying them but can't be gotten rid of because their salaries make it impossible to trade them away. FURTHERMORE you speed up the decay of the roster by fostering a revolving door mentality where paychecks and ego are more important than winning and loyalty. I fucking HATE the rebuilding process. I HATE when a team says "we're not even going to try for the next x number of years, we'll 'rebuild' (suck major ass) for a couple of years and hope that what we've done while we "rebuilt" is enough to make us a contender again." Yeah, it has to happen, but why the hell should I look forward to four, five, six 61-101 type years?

I disagree. The way things are going for the Yankees, Brown will fail his physical and kill the deal and the Yankees will be stuck with Weaver yet again..... Or even worse, Weaver goes public with the fact that he's being run out of town by the Yankees for Brown and gives a damning interview that humiliates Steinbrenner and the entire roster with Weaver burning every possible bridge imaginable with his fellow teammates and the Yankee management.... After all, nothing says trouble in sports that a disgruntled and highly pissed off jock ranting and raving about how his teammates and club higher ups are all a bunch of worthless fucks.... EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2003 I really think last year was an abboration. He still struck out twice as many batters as he walked. He just gave up an unusually high number of hits. Given Jeter's, Soriano's, and Bernie's defense, its possible the defense contributed largly to Weaver's woes. Guest Anglesault Report post Posted December 12, 2003 Personally, if he was getting fucked by fielding, I'd remember that. I went to one Weaver game last year, and it was chock full of clean hits. I also remember him giving up an abnormal amount of home runs, but I might be getting last year's mess and 2002s disaster confused.
