The Simpsons

Recommended Posts

Honestly, was that even intended to be funny? It seemed more like a drama than anything. Homer chasing the cop car was amusing, but the tone of the episode was very down.

I miss when The Simpsons was still semi-realistic (i.e. seasons one and two). It's too over the top now.

Honestly...it was shit.

And I'm the biggest Simpsons fan in the world.

I hated the haloween episode as well. <_<

I think it's time for them to pack up shop and either just do the movie or fastforward this to when Bart and Lisa are teenagers.

The Halloween episode stunk. They ripped off the Homer is Death from the Family Guy, and who cares about Professor Frink's dad father who has never been on the show.

I didn't care for Treehouse of Horrors this year, but I didn't think this episode was that bad.

Eh, but what do I know...I like wacky adventure Simpsons and don't always have to laugh alot in order to like an episode. I'm one of those people who fully admit it's no where near it's prime, but still enjoys it more often than not.

I liked the interaction between the prisoners and Homer. But it is looking more and more that they need to pack it up. And I am one of the types who tries to justify everything and think to myself they should be around for 5 or 6 more years at least. I just really don't care about watching it anymore. If I remember to sit down at 8pm then good for me, if not whatever.

You know it's going to be a bad season if they couldn't even make the Halloween episode funny. And it shows just how unoriginal it's gotten when they completely ripped off Family Guy.

Like I said about; the only way to save the Simpsons is to age the characters 5 or 6 yrs.

I don't know if it is right to age the characters now. If they had done it while the eps were still good it could be seen as evolution, but right now it would just scream of desperation and immediately alienate a lot of fans.

No aging...that would be the biggest mistake the show can make.

What exactly would aging them accomplish other than pissing off all of the fans of the show.

If they want to age them, they can do it in the movie, but not until then.

who cares about Professor Frink's dad father who has never been on the show.

Jerry Lewis doing the voice gave it some redeeming value. The phrase "dad father" is also funny.

I like the time stopping segment of the Halloween show, the other two were uninteresting.

This week's episode, however, I didn't mind. It seemed way better to me than what they've been doing for the past few years, on par with season 10 maybe. A few episodes last season were around there too. It's nowhere near prime, but I wouldn't mind a couple more years of this level. Who knows, they might even continue to improve.

And fuck aging. They'd be idiots to do that.

Hmm. I liked last nights episode. It got a quite a few laughs from me.

I particularly liked the Homer ala beautiful mind. Found it funny for some reason.

I don't understand why they don't do the time shift thing, personally. They've done all they can with their characters right now, especially if they never age. The more they go with this time period, the more their continuity looks even more fucked up than that of the WWE's... you know it's bad when THAT happens.

I think that aging the Simpsons would give them a whole whack of other ideas to deal with. Good ones. Screw the teens. Jump ahead to when Bart is married, Lisa is in college, and Maggie can be the teen, just like that one episode where Lisa had her fortune read at the Rennasiance [sp?] fair.

Good idea, IMO, but it'll probably never happen. :(

The only moment from last night's episode I laughed out loud at was Homer on the bike riding down the street... straight onto the highway. Other than that, it was just eh.

Futurama should have taken over the Simpsons timeslot years ago. Well, actually Family Guy should have, but you know.

And they should age the characters. There's only so much they can do with Bart and Lisa being in their respective grades. Put them in a new class, with new situations and you have more storyline ideas to work with. And Maggie can be the mischevous talking toddler. That, and get Conan O'Brian to write for them again. Only then can this abomination of a show be saved.

I felt Sunday's show was quite funny!

Its was leaps and bounds more entertaining than the Holloween special.

I really hope they can make it to year 20.

Just rotate writers.

Barneys change, like RRR said, I can't get over.

Yesterday's show had 2 funny moments:

a) Batman dancing in the 60's montage

b) And when Homer knocked over Frank "Grimey" Grime's tombstone.

Nothing else was remotely funny. Do y'all remember when it was about the whole family and not just the homer Simpson show?

b) And when Homer knocked over Frank "Grimey" Grime's tombstone.

That had me dying. And I also got a laugh out of Bart's waking up in the car.

As for Barney...I haven't really been watching all that much since 2000, so I've missed some things. Exactly how did he change?

You people are way too down on the show now. I thought it was great, aside from the somewhat odd last few minutes. I don't really know what you guys want, but I laughed many, many times and thought it was one of the better episodes we've seen recently. You're telling me that Homer writing to Die Hard wasn't funny?

And the "Simpsons is just a Family Guy ripoff" lines are getting old. I love how you complain that the Simpsons is too over the top, but you love FG, which is just as over the top, if not more. Don't get me wrong, I love both shows, too, but the reasons I usually hear for the Simpsons not being funny are often the same things that FG is praised for.

Don't even get me started on Futurama. You guys cut it way too much slack. You can blame "the man" for the show never taking off and I'll agree with you to a point that the show didn't really get a fair shake, but there's a reason that it's not known as the "next Simpsons," and simply put, it's because it never was good enough to be.

Crapping on the Simpsons has become a past time around here, much like shitting all over WWE. Only difference is, one doesn't deserve it nearly as much.

To be fair, Family Guy was always intended to be over the top. That was what set it apart from the other animated programs on primetime TV. However, the Simpsons started out as a more down to earth comedy cartoon and then all of a sudden became outlandish and absurd.

The problem was they picked a shitty, quasi-serious topic for the season premiere. Too much Homer being sad that his mom (who's not enough of a 'brand-name guest' to warrant a season premiere) and too much serious situations. Normally the first 1,2, maybe 3 new episodes are really good, and then it falls into the on-again, off-again lull that's plagued the show lately.

But having said all that, you're kidding me if you think that some drastic changes are needed to make the show watchable. It's still one of the most consistently funny shows on TV (I scoff at the notion of Futurama being worthy of the Simpsons tv slot ... Family Guy could potentially be worthy of following the Simpsons, but Futurama is exactly where it belongs). The kids don't need to age. The show doesn't need to get serious, or more logical. Homer doesn't need to get brighter. The show is still better than 90% of the shit that the networks are putting out there, and you guys want to change it?!?

(dammit, Bruiser, I had a whole rant planned while reading this thread and you beat me to the punch. He who hesitates is stoned, I guess)

The thing with aging the characters is that it gives the writers a whole new wealth of ideas to work with. And there are things in the series that could be explored by moving ahead. You could do more with the Milhouse/Lisa stuff, you could have Skinner promoted to the high school only to find that he's stuck with Bart again. Heck you could even shift the focus of the show off of Homer and back on to Bart. There are tons of other things to do with the townsfolk to. Barney could have fallen back off the wagon, etc. I think it would just give the writers some inspiration and help the quality of the shows.

Alright, I didn't want to say this before, but you people who want them to make drastic changes, such as aging, you know shit. Maybe you're very intelligent people, but you know nothing about television. That is the absolute worst thing they could possibly do. Every other tv show in history is backing me up.

When the writing is bad, changing the core structure of the show doesn't help. If it did, every show where they went to Africa, or Japan or wherever would be a standout episode, which they aren't. New situations are not the key to improvement, all it is, is desperation.

I agree. It would give the show an entire new layer to work with. I'm getting tired of the status quo.
