VCD is MPEG1 has a resolution of 352x240 (NTSC) and a constant video bitrate of 1150 (XVCD you can change both of these).

SVCD is MPEG2 and has a video resolution of 480x480 and a constant bitrate of 2520, but this can be set to variable to allow for a smaller file size without sacrificing too much quality.

SVCD is the way to go if your after quality...

ok, so if my dvd player can play VCD, then SVCD is the same thing, just better quality and can still be played by my VCD dvd player!?!

Not every dvd player will play both types, but unless your player is an older one (ie, more than five years old), you should be fine.

Also, note that ps2 and x-box won't play either type.
