spiny norman 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2003 (edited) Well, we all had fun with the Horror movies, so I say on with the Musicals now. I hope I am not the only Musical devotee here, so nominate your faves away. Maximum of three per person. I nominate: Moulin Rouge! Rocky Horror Picture Show West Side Story EDIT: Stage musicals are not counted unless they have been converted into a movie. Therefore, you can not nominate Les Miserables (unless somebody made the musical into a movie and I'm not aware of it). Guest Choken One Report post Posted November 23, 2003 Does that stupid Buffy Musical Count?
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted November 23, 2003 Don't mention the B word...we don't want those Buffy freaks sniffing around. ...I liked the musical episode...
spiny norman 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2003 I think there are some people here who appreciate musicals. Surely? Who could hate Wizard Of Oz or Grease or Cabaret etc. And no, Buffy Musical isn't counted, unless nobody actually nominates anything else.
DMann2003 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2003 I nominate Singin' in the Rain It's a damn great film people.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted November 23, 2003 There's a few...but good luck finding them amoungst the garbage that will likely find it's way here. I'll nominate Chicago
spiny norman 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2003 And I'm just wondering, has the musical version of Phantom Of The Opera been released on film yet? I know there's one coming up. *awaits nomination for Glitter*
Guest Choken One Report post Posted November 23, 2003 What's defined as a MUSICAL? Would a movie that has Singin in the Movie such as A Mighty Wind count? or a movie that people actually saw..."O Brother where art thou"
spiny norman 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2003 I wouldn't count it personally. Or Spinal Tap (thought it pains me to say it). I'll be willing to let Blues Brothers go though.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted November 23, 2003 Well then... 8 MILE.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted November 23, 2003 I believe a musical is defined as a movie with scenes done as a musical number. So no, A Mighty Wind wouldn't count

Guest Choken One Report post Posted November 23, 2003 I believe a musical is defined as a movie with scenes done as a musical number. So no, A Mighty Wind wouldn't count 8 Mile still counts though right?
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted November 23, 2003 Unless 8 Mile has scenes that were acted out as a song, it wouldn't count. Footage of him on stage or rapping on the street wouldn't be considered musical numbers.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted November 23, 2003 I enjoyed Dancer in The Dark
Guest Choken One Report post Posted November 23, 2003 Unless 8 Mile has scenes that were acted out as a song, it wouldn't count. Footage of him on stage or rapping on the street wouldn't be considered musical numbers. Then we gotta get in a whole debate about if Rapping is considered Singing because in 3/4 of the movie he's rapping and it's not always on stage...
spiny norman 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2003 I'll count it, though it pains me to do it. El Satanico, are you nominating Dancer In The Dark, or just enjoying it?
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted November 23, 2003 I'll nominate it, but keep it as an alternate. If there's an open spot put it on, but don't put it in over a classic. I'd have to see it, but I doubt 8 Mile fits the definition of "musical". No it's not because of the rapping aspect, since I have no problem calling it a singing style. spiny norman 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2003 Well, I'm just going by Choken One's description. If it's rapping the way someone sings in a musical, just a spontaneous way of expressing themselves, then it's counted.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted November 23, 2003 Since many scenes they commucate via Rap or battlessuch as the scene at the Meat Wagon or the Rap Battle in the Parking lot, which is no different then the Dance sequence from WSS. ...I say it's not any different then some other ones here...It's not a full blown Musical like Oklahoma or Chicago was since not all scenes are rap related. Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2003 Look at it this way: What happens in a musical doesn't happen in real life. People will actually spontaneously burst into rap in the fasion which occured in 8 Mile in real life. So I wouldn't call it a musical. I nominate Cannibal! The Musical and Little Shop of Horrors. spiny norman 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2003 While I have no problem with that, it is a straight to video release and not many people would have seen it. Are you sure you want to nominate it, and why hasn't anybody nominated Sound Of Music/Wizard Of Oz yet?
moral suasion 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2003 Does it have to be a movie or are you counting stage musicals that havn't been adapted into a movie as well?
spiny norman 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2003 Sorry, I thought I wrote that in my original post. I'll edit it in now. No stage musicals unless they have been made into a film.
