Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Report post Posted November 27, 2003 This has to be one of the most underrated matches of the last five years. Because I saw several posters (who I doubt saw the match to begin with, but whatever) call it "dull" and say it had "too much stalling." Whaa? Am I alone when I say that that match was the finest Iron man match North America has EVER produced? It used to the stipulations beautifully, and it took place between two workers who, unlike Bret and Shawn, didn't have bad blood (at the time) and just wanted to put on a kickass match. They provided a ton of cool unexpected finishes and the ending was one of the biggest mark-out moments of 2000. Discuss.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted November 27, 2003 I haven't actually seen an Iron Man match that I liked. HHH/Rock was certainly better than the other two that I've seen (Two live, one a few years later) but it certainly wasn't an enjoyable hour for me. Rule of thumb: If I start reading a book in the middle of the match, only to look up when I hear the ref count, that's a problem.

Obviously, taste is subjective and I can't really argue that, but why did you get bored? Is that just too much time for one match to sit through all at once? LaParkaMarka 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2003 I wasn't bored through the match at all. Quite frankly, I was expecting it tp fall apart after 20 minutes or so, but they did a heck of a job. The problem I have with it is the messed up finish. Not sure if I consider it one of the best, but it was a fun hour.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2003 I love Rock v. HHH and I totally agree with you Zsasz. The last half hour with all the different finishers was brilliant and everyone wondering when/if HBK would turn was a nice backstory. Jerry Lawler also showed what he can do on commentary when told not to act like a horny old man. He was focused on the match itself and put over the match and Rock/HHH thanks to his commentary. And even in that match, which had a lot more than the other two, there was alot of "down" time in it.
Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2003 I saw the match in my pre-Internet Smark days, and even then I was pissed that there had to be run-ins at the end, especially since HHH sent everyone to the back, saying he wanted to do it himself, which gave it that "Oh SNAP, this is going to be awesome" quality. bob_barron 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2003 I enjoy really long matches- there's a lot to look for and analyse. Of course sometimes they will end up being dreadfully dull (Xavier v. Daniels from ROH is an example) but there are long matches like War Games 92 and Angle/Benoit v. Rey/Edge that just seem to fly by and don't seem to be 20+ minutes

Not sure if I consider it one of the best, but it was a fun hour. Well, I think the ending works personally. It tied up all the peripheral storylines in the match (HBK as ref, DX barred from ringside, etc.) and the Undertaker's appearance had my entire family marking out. I rank the Iron Man's that I've seen this way: 1. Triple H/Rock 2. Steamboat/Rude (It's a bit dry for my tastes) 3. HBK/Hart 4. Lesnar/Angle

bob_barron 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2003 I rank them- 1. HHH v. Rock 2. ROH 4-way 3. Brock v. Angle 4. HBK v. Bret Brock v. Angle has way too much stalling in the beginning but the last 20-30 minutes is amazing stuff that had me out of breath watching it live

Guest SP-1 Report post Posted November 27, 2003 I like HHH/Rock. I hate the finish. The camera angles on the original airing were horrible, as if they were genuinely surprised that someone was showing up on the ramp. I wasn't even sure it was Taker until he was already in action. Sorry. The match itself was great, but the production issues screwed the finish for me.

Guest Ray Report post Posted November 27, 2003 I hate most long matches. I didn't hate Rock/HHH. Wouldn't call it a great match, but they killed time better than most, and did some interesting things. Easily better than Angle/Lesnar or Hart/Michaels. Didn't SKeith give it *****? Prophet of Mike Zagurski 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2003 Well, I'm suprised the people here dislike HBK/Bret. Don't you all like technical wrestling. It's the perfect match. 40 minutes of rest holds and arm bars and twenty minutes of high spots. That match has to worth ****** because of the extra effort involved by the competitors. The HHH/Rock ironman match was ruined by having Rock and HHH in it. The Rock is all show, from his weird looking stomps to People's Elbow. HHH is a horible wrestler, at least that's what most people say. So is the Undertaker. The ending was terrible because of all the run-ins. HHH and HBK screwed the Rock. Angle and Brock was great cause it had techinical wrestling. I think it was about ********* or something like that. I love Angle, please don't hurt me. Guest BionicRedneck Report post Posted November 27, 2003 I didn't dislike HHH-Rock. It was a pleasent surprise considering the talent involved. Angle-Brock was fucking awful. At least Bret-Shawn had a semi-dramatic climax, Brock-Angle didn't even have that.
chaosrage 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2003 Too much punching and kicking. Like it or hate it, at least Shawn and Bret were going for something completely different. They didn't just take their same formula and run with it for 60 minutes.
chaosrage 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2003 Well, I'm suprised the people here dislike HBK/Bret. Don't you all like technical wrestling. It's the perfect match. I agree. They don't like it because they wanted to see the same thing for the entire match. They wanted to see Bret working on Shawn's neck and Shawn working on Bret's arm for the entire hour. Or something like that. At least that's what I got out of the big ass thread we had on it a few weeks ago.

Guest gilpdawg Report post Posted November 27, 2003 Heh, I was at the Rock/HHH match, and except for the last 20 minutes, I thought it blew in person. Then when the VHS (remember those?) came out, I re-watched it and thought it ruled, so there you go.
Michrome 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2003 It was a million times better than it had any right to be, I haven't watched it in a while, but remember thinking it was like ****ish. Flair-Hart is a better ironman, and I think the ROH one is a bit below Rock-Hunter.
