Similar to what Angel said, I don't really think FF6 had someone who could qualify as a main character. You started off with Terra but you weren't obligated to have her in your party at all times, you didn't even need her in your party to complete the game (I think, I need to go back and check that).

The brothers, while good characters, don't seem to have a strong backstory other than the segue in the castle early in the game.

Cyan had a better story than 80% of other people, but the whole first half of the game he is relegated to a supporting cast member.

Celes, too is out for a significant chunk of the first half of the game.

Locke probably had the most screen time out of the first half of the game, gone for a chunk of the second half, but still pretty much the strongest face throughout.

And to add to the "Kefka was FFVI's true main character" argument is the fact that he is the only face that is really present for the entire game, beginning to end

Now that I think about it, someone should make a poll for "worst FF villain"

I would, except I haven't played all the FF's to completion, thus don't know all the villains offhand

That's the line I was going from- Squall never hated everyone. He just has a hard time trusting people. That doesn't mean he hated them- he's just always been alone, and isn't used to people around him opening their hearts to him.

The Quistis thing is a good example- he grew up always thinking you're supposed to keep your emotions to yourself, and here's his teacher- his TEACHER- opening up her entire emotions and life to him. What the fuck was his reaction supposed to be? It was entirley realistic, at least to me.

I don't expect him to give a shit about her problems. Just to be a little less of an asshole in brushing her off.

I also don't think Squall hated everyone. Actually I don't think he hated anyone, he didn't even seem to hate Seifer. He seems like a jerk and hateful in his conversations with people, but you can see what he's thinking most of the time and can see it's not that he is trying to be mean, he just has bad social skills. Like with Quistis, he doesn't reply like that to be an ass, he is just scared to get involved.

The only thing he's thinking about most of the time is himself. He never feels sorry for hurting anyone's feelings. It's all about him. When does he give a shit about anyone else before Rinoa falls in a coma and he's suddenly in love with her?

Kefka wasn't in the entire WOR up until the end

Terra's definitely the main character in the first half of FF6. Everything revolves around her.

What about the second half? It's Celes game from there.

I'm going through the game again right now. I think the absolute minimum party you need to win the game is Sabin, Edgar, Setzer, and Celes.

You don't need Sabin. People always assume you do because you get him first after Celes, but you can head straight for Nikeah and Edgar if you want. Setzer, Edgar & Celes are the only guys who are forced in your party in the WOR.

even if half the posts are Captain Anime defending Squall (face it, you're in the minority here)

Sakura did, and I believe I did, a while back. I would defend him as much as them, but I know my responses probably wouldn't be as good.

As for FFX-2... ugh, why do people keep comparing it to Tomb Raider? So what, she has twin guns and shorts. Oooh...wow...so every chick who wears that is copying off of a lame, pathetic franchise? Pfft...as if. Personally, I don't think Tomb Raider could ever be in the same league as a Final Fantasy, especially X and X2.

About Zidane...sure, he was an interesting chara, especially for me, after playing FF8 endlessly. [Ooh...I rhyme!] I don't really get the Vivi love. I mean, sure, he had that lonely-pathetic-helplessness, plus cuteness, that's sure to make anyone like him. Personally, though, I preferred Dagger.

Heh...dammit...this is making me wanna play the game again. [side note: Does the PS2 enhance the PS1 graphics, as in smooth it out in the FMV sequences? I've heard that it does, but so far, haven't really noticed a diff. Or is it something you have to adjust?]

If the Tactics main chara was on here, he'd get my vote, hands down. The game was great, in terms of strategy and all, but the story made..no..sense. Well, to me anyway. It's like This Guy was fighting That Guy, but then swerve~! he's on That Guy's side all along....it's like *blink*Huh?*blink*. But the bit where the main chara shows the princess how to 'whistle with grass' was most amusing for all the wrong reasons.

You have to adjust it. Go into the menu and put the textures on smooth.

Ramza Beoulve was a good character.

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

He was a lot like Tom Cruise's character in Last Samurai. He starts off with the Hokuten fighting against the Death Corps, but then he begins to grow attached to their ideals thanks to Wiegraf Folles, and after his brother orders the murder of his best friend's sister, he turns against them and begins fighting for what were his opponents, and eventually gives his life (arguably) going up against the Church.

Granted he seems a little weak compared to Delita Hyral, one of the best villains in RPG history, but he was a good hero. The best thing was that he was never a whiner. He did want to do the right thing.

The only whining hero I liked was Fei Fong Wong from Xenogears. And that's because unlike the others, it wasn't just angst. He really was screwed up so much since birth that you couldn't help feeling sympathy for him.

You should apply that to all your responses

Yes. Is it that hard for you to understand?

In my sleepy rambling, I wrote up a bit about Tidus in the 'Worst FF Villains' thread, so figured I'd post it here:

X is pretty bad too in terms of characters and plot

How is it bad? Personally, I think it's the best so far [haven't played much of X2]. It's, if I'm not mistaken, twice as long as 8 or 9, and it really pulled me into the story. Almost all the characters were interesting in their own right.

Tidus - okay, maybe his voice acting made him sound too much like a bitch, but his story was interesting. Being found out he's a dream and all that. Plus, I liked the sub-story about how he hates his dad. He may hate him, but still wanted his love.

You have to adjust it. Go into the menu and put the textures on smooth.

Danke, mien freund ^_^

I would say Terra is the lead character in FF VI. The big thing in the game is espers and she's the key to it. Even though you don't have to have her in the party at the end, she is ALWAYS in the ending.

I'll even grudgingly admit that you've got a point there. It wasn't until the second half or so of the game that I began to really be annoyed with the title (which I still like way more than Xenosaga).

Worst Final Fantasy Leads--if applicable, would be those bastards from FFTA. I hate FFTA more than Xenosaga, Saga Frontier, and FFVIII.

The game's horrid story, archaic gameplay, and irritating characters made the entire time I played it pure hell. Never have I played a game and had such an overwhelming feeling of "what the hell am I doing playing this crap?" Absolute torture.

It's really amazing that Square would go all kiddy with FFTA after FFTs rather dark and mature story. Go figure.

FFTA made me fear for FFXII, since it's in the same universe. But it looks like it won't be exactly the same as the silly Ivalice in FFTA.

Oh, and is it me, or were the FFTA commercials the worst commercials for a Square game ever?

I remember the FFIII commercial with Mog blasting the baddies to bits. That was a cool commercial.

Hell, even the FFX-2 commercial works.

All this talk about FFTA's sucking is making me thankful I kept putting off getting it for other games, hehehe.

I really want to get into FFT(just the original, not FFTA) but it's too hard. I could not even get past like the 4th or so battle. I fought some archers or whatever and just got owned. Does it remain that hard the whole game?

It gets easier once you get more skills but I haven't had much problem with it overall. Archers are a priority to take out, especially if they can get high up because then they have more range.

Also, the guys with the sword magic can wreak havoc. The FFT incarnation of Cid is extremely badass.

The most useful jobs to me seemed to be Monk, Lancer, Geomancer, and most of the Mage types.

Kahran is right. Make sure to equally build up your characters, and really make sure that Ramza learns Jump (that Wiegraf battle is nigh-impossible without Jump). The game is very tough, but worthwhile...the story is among the best FF stories, if not the best straight up.

She's talking about the 4th fight not 4th chapter...

The important thing to do is LEVEL a LOT before the Dorter Trade City fight.

The problem about chapter one is that a lot of jobs are unusable because you can't get the right equipment.

Just use Knights and white mages, until you can get better classes.

FFT is kind of obnoxiously hard. I have lots of memories of having to play a battle over and over, particularly like the third battle in a dungeon that doesn't let you go back, so you either have to beat it or start the game over, bad design. In situations like that, strategy was pretty much nonexistant, you just had to hope to get lucky and have the enemy not do their strongest thing. The difficulty was also really inconsistant, you could be going along just fine, and then bam, you'd run into some impossible battle that forces you to level five levels or play it twenty times. Then after that it'd go back to being easy again. It could have done with more playtesting or something.

Cool game though, if you could get through it. Good plot. Probably too frustrating for me to ever play through again though.

Ok so I hate hard games, so I'm gonna pass on giving it another chance.

Does anyone know if Arc the Lad is like FFT? It looks to be a strategy RPG.

FFT is absolutely not hard *at all*

Its just easy to skip too far ahead.

If you take your time and level up, it's cake.

Just use summoner, dragoons, and the like and you WON'T lose.
