The BCS Selection Show Thread

Recommended Posts

If you're thinking of finding a new team, you were never really a fan to start with.

I was joking. I'm not going to find a new team. But jesus christ....it's hard to see your team make it so far and then just fail miserably. I can't decide which is better.....making it and not suceeding...or not making it at all. Such high hopes.......

OU didn't play like OU last night. They played like Baylor.

But K-State didn't play like K-State....they played like OU on crack.

And Angleslayer....stop thinking about it to study? Football is life!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *now wishes he'd never started watching football because he had such a happy life before it*

Why is the state of Oklahoma paying for your education again? Do you have nude pics of Brad Henry or something?

Man I just can't get over it. Someone tell me if they've ever had the feelings I'm having.

Last night I just felt physically sick. I could barely watch the game. I kept wanting to wake up from a bad dream. That's what if felt like. A bad fucking dream. After every K-State touchdown I wanted to go to the bathroom and puke my guts out.

I've talked to friends from school and they had to turn the game off because they couldn't watch it anymore.

Has anyone else had that feeling?

And I just wanted to sit down and cry whenever i realized that Jason White wasn't going to get his Heisman. The guy played his fucking heart out all season. After 2 years of bullshit injuries he finally comes back and has the best season any quarterback could have. And it all crumbled right in front of him last night. I'll agree that he has nobody to blame but himself and his team but come on...you have to at least feel for the poor guy.

Is there even a chance he'll get the Heisman now?

And on top of all of this...is anybody really giving OU ZERO chance at beating LSU?

Christ, you ARE young.

I've had that feeling so many times I've lost count. Some highlights:

- The Toronto Blue Jays blowing a 3-1 lead against Kansas City in the 1985 ALCS.

- Said Blue Jays blowing a 4 1/2 game lead in the final week of the season in 1987.

- Keith Smart's jumper from the corner to beat Syracuse in the 1987 NCAA final.

- Denver getting wiped off the face of the sporting world by the 49ers in Super Bowl XXIV.

- The Toronto Maple Leafs getting jobbed in 1993 against the L.A. Kings in the conference final...ONE GOAL from a Stanley Cup final against Montreal.

- Team Canada losing in a FUCKING SHOOTOUT to Sweden in the 1994 Olympic hockey gold medal game.

- And then losing a shootout to the Czechs in Nagano in 1998 in the quarterfinals, with Wayne Gretzky never getting to shoot.

- Minnesota blowing a lead late and losing in overtime to Atlanta in the 1999 NFC final.

- Same Vikings getting destroyed by the New York Giants 41-0 in the 2001 NFC final.

- And, most recently, Ottawa coming back from 3-1 down in the Eastern Conference final against New Jersey this year, only to let a 2-1 lead slip away and lose in the final two minutes of Game 7 to New Fucking Jersey.

So, yeah, I feel your "pain." Even though your team can still, you know, WIN A FUCKING CHAMPIONSHIP.

Christ, you ARE young.

Well I am young. I'm only 19 years old and i've only been really watching football since the end of last season. I watched a bit when the 49ers and Cowboys were on top winning super bowls left and right but that was about it. So yes I'm new to the game.

And I have a strong interest in Baseball, Hockey, and Basketball. But I don't know the who's who and really much about any of the games so I don't ever watch. I know more about basketball than the other two but I don't know any teams so I don't ever watch the games because I don't know who to root for. So if anyone wants to PM me a "How to get started" on those 3 sports and a "How to catch up on Football" I'd be much obliged.

Remember.....reactions like my current one come from those unedcuated in sports that don't know the sting of defeat. Now I know it...and it hurts.

I had that feeling last week (49ers/Ravens game) but I watched it til the end.

If the computer says that USC should NOT be in the National Championship game, then it shouldn't be a "travesty". Yet, even though with the situation we have right now, any of the three teams being left out would've been labelled as a travesty.

I advocate laying this argument to rest, by finding the computer's explanation on ESPN.com or NCAA.com for why USC is being left out.

Oh yeah, Super Bowl XXXII killed me too. People were apologizing to me the next day and talking like someone in my family had died or something. It felt that awful to watch Down Syndrome Elway (look at how that mofo looks when he's smiling in that game and shit) hoist that trophy up after the best second best Super Bowl ever in my eyes (XXXIV being the best).

There is a difference between a bad sports memory (one yard short) and an experience like the OU-KSU game. I had to suffer through it last year in the NFC championship. Final game at the Vet, Eagles playing against a team they have owned the last few years, and as soon as Joe Jurevicious caught that 50+ yard crossing route every single Eagle fan knew the game was over.

And we still had to sit there for 55 minutes, knowing there wasn't a damn thing that could be done.

Yeah it's even more frustrating to watch your team play like shit when you KNOW they can do better than to watch them try there damndest and then just fall short. At least they gave an effort.

Last night I was screaming at my TV "GET YOUR HEADS OUT OF YOUR ASSES!"

Ok well it looks like we are going nowhere discussing who will win between OU/LSU. It seems to be pretty even and we'll just have to wait for the game.

But USC/Michigan is interesting and we haven't really discussed it. USC is the favorite but who gives Michigan a chance? And what do they have to do to win this game?

Oh and how about some sports intros.....or a site where I can find them? You don't have to do them all...just one.

I just need some basic info and some who's who stuff.

I would do a google search...but I hate that damn thing. I never get what I want.

ESPN.com will have previews of each game up eventually.

People forget how good Michigan is since they played Ohio State two weeks ago, and after all of this BCS talk, two weeks ago feels like a year. Michigan is amped at the idea of being able to lay claim to a national title by beating #1 USC, so that just adds to their current hotness.

What's done is done. You've got what should be two outstanding games. Just enjoy the games, you can't do anything about what happens next. If we get a split national championship, than that's how it is.

If this wasn't mentioned Florida St./ Miami play the first game of the next year. Wonder if that's ever happened before. End, and begin the next season with the same team.

Sorry to sound like an ass, but the NFC championship technically wasn't the last game at the Vet. It was a meaningless Phillies- Braves game.

Re: Heartbreaking sports moment

Try being a Cubs fan this year.

Oh yeah?

Try being a Cubs and Mavericks fan.

Just sitting there, hoping they won't blow it and watching as they slowly crumble.

I swear, between the Pats and their damn last second field goals while being a Noles fan knowing how those last second field goals can turn out while being a Cubs fan who is used to losing to being an Orioles fan who watched a team just start losing and not stop and watching the Mavericks unable to play defense for 20 seconds to seeing a Mighty Ducks goalie suddenly unable to stop a shot.....I should have died years ago or be in the funny farm.

I KNEW I should have been a bandwagon fan! Least then I knew suffer the emotional ripping.

Back to the BCS controversy.

I'm hearing many people applauding the BCS because they are saying it doesn't take into account 1 game it takes into account the entire season..which is what some people think should happen.

Many are happy that OU is going because they had the hardest schedule out of the 3 teams, posted the best numbers, and lost to a ranked team unlike USC.

Then those that only pay attention to 1 game belive OU is undeserving....despite dominating the season.

So in closing.....nobody will ever be happy. Except me...if OU wins the national title.

I kept wanting to wake up from a bad dream.

The alarm rang at 5:30 when the announcement was made. You're in the National Title game, which although the loss sucks for you & other OU fans, you still have that chance.

I'll say it now --- Michigan will OWN USC. The PAC-10 is horribly overrated (then again, the Big 10 is no big shakes, either). USC had the benefit of a weak conference to make them look good.

And for LSU/Oklahoma --- I'll just say this: I have NEVER seen a team with as much friggin' speed as LSU. They are ridiculously fast --- and I think that will give OU some serious trouble.

Let's be honest, the problem, as always, are the PRESEASON POLLS. The AP and coaches base their ENTIRE poll on how the stupid thing started off. If LSU started ahead of USC, they'd have been #1 right now. I have little respect for a system that uses educated guesses before the season even starts to basically dictate what teams can and cannot make the nat'l title game.

At least you were on the good end of a 6-1 score in game 7 of the Leafs/Flyers series last year. These are the same Leafs who were eliminated in OT by the fluke Carolina Hurricanes the year before, and the same Leafs who a few years earlier went out against New Jersey with only SIX FUCKING SHOTS (!) to show for it. Ugh, they better win the Cup sometime soon.

Oh, and on topic, the BCS is fucked and probably the main reason I can't get in to college football.

There'd be outrage no matter who got left out. Because all three deserve to be there, and, hey, I say by beating OU for the Big 12 Championship you can make a case for K-State in the BCS championship game too. After all, if a team is #1 and you beat #1, doesn't that kinda make you #1?

LSU deserves to be there. They won a major conference [sEC] and beat a top 5 team twice. As well as beating several other ranked teams. Beating the same Top 5 team twice in one year has got to count for something.

USC deserves to be there. They won a major conference [Pac-10], beat several ranked teams in the process, and suffered only one defeat: an overtime loss on the road in-conference to a bowl-bound team.

OU deserves to be there: they didn't win their major conference (Big 12) but they did go 12-1, there one loss being to the conference champion, and they beat several ranked teams in the process.

But there's only room for two in the current system.

My point? Until and unless Division 1-A has a playoff system in place, there will always be a deserving team that never gets a fair chance to play for the national title. There will be a cloud over every national champion, because there will be at least one bad-ass worthy team that the "champion" didn't have to go thru.

But then, I figure that's what they really want. Debate, Uncertainty, Controversial Decisions. They probably make more money this way. Just like Don King in Boxing. Hoodwink. The perpetual carnival con job that whets the people's appetites, and tempts us rubes with a payoff that always stays just out of reach.

Come on, smartmarks, don't you recognize it? We, of all sports fans, should see it.

I've asked about 100 times the last week and never got a straight answer, but...

Besides Texas, WHO DID OKLAHOMA PLAY THAT WAS ACTUALLY WORTH A DAMN?

Sorry, but all this "Their schedule was tougher" bullshit has been going on without anybody actually defending that argument (and this includes the media, not just us BSing here).

With the possible exception of USC, OU played fewer ranked teams than anybody in the top 5. But by God, those 6-5 records sure add up with strength of schedule, don't they?

Oklahoma's schedule:

North Texas (9-3)

Alabama (4-9)

Fresno State (8-5)

UCLA (6-6)

Iowa State (2-10)

Texas (10-2)

Missouri (8-4)

Colorado (5-7)

Oklahoma State (9-3)

Texas A&M (4-8)

Baylor (3-9)

Texas Tech (7-5)

Kansas State (10-3)

North Texas, Fresno, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and K-State are all going to bowls.

Of those, I say that the records of North Texas and Fresno State are bullshit to say the least, as they're upper-tier teams in HORRIBLE conferences containing crap teams like SMU, UTEP, San Jose State, New Mexico State, Idaho, etc. Jesus, North Texas is the only team in the Sun Belt with at least six wins, with the vast majority of the teams endind the season at 4-8 or 3-9. Vanderbilt could play in these leagues and be competitive.

As for the Big 12 teams that Oklahoma played, the only quality wins picked up from outside the conference were Nebraska over Southern Miss (regarded as one of the top non-BCS programs annually), Texas Tech over Ole Miss and New Mexico, and K-State over the Cal team that beat USC.

The quality teams that the Big 12 teams played tended to beat them (Pittsburg, Arkansas, Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, Northwestern) as well as some mid-major teams as well (Marshall over K-State, Northern Illinois over Iowa State, UAB over Baylor, etc.)

In short, the Big 12 is as guilty of schedule-padding as any other conference, except it had the good luck this year for Oklahoma to schedule two mid-majors that were having a good year against bad conference opponents.

That doesn't take anything away from Oklahoma's playing ability... just their mythical strength of schedule.

OU beat a 9-3 Oklahoma State team, a 10-2 #5 in the country Texas team, and an 8-4 Missouri team. They also played K-State and lost, along with some mid-level BCS teams (UCLA, Texas Tech).

LSU beat a 10-3 #11 Georgia team twice, a 9-3 and #17 Ole Miss team, and 8-4 Arkansas team, and lost to a really good Florida team. Beat a decent mid-level team in Auburn.

USC beat a 9-3 something like #13 Washington State team...and Auburn (7-5) and Oregon State (7-5). 8-5 mid-major eh team Hawaii, then the rest of the Pac-10 except Cal, plus BYU.

If you really want to complain about schedules, bitch about USC. Seriously, no one in college football plays that many opponents that end up looking strong at the end of the season. I believe Notre Dame has the #1 strength of schedule in the nation, and the teams they played with 9 wins or more were FSU, Michigan, Washington State, Purdue and USC. The only reason they CAN play all them plus Pittsburgh and Boston College is because they're an independent. No team in a BCS conference is going to get a chance to play many big teams because they all have to play 6 to 8 conference games.

For counter-argument sake, I'll post LSU's schedule and note who replaced who when applicable.

Louisiana-Monroe (1-11, replacement for Troy State (6-6), who pulled out)

Arizona (2-10)

Western Illinois (9-4 and a I-AA quarterfinalist, replacement for Marshall (8-4), who pulled out at the last minute)

Georgia (10-3)

Mississippi State (2-10)

Florida (8-4)

South Carolina (5-7)

Auburn (7-5)

Louisiana Tech (5-7)

Alabama (4-9)

Ole Miss (9-3)

Arkansas (8-4)

Georgia (10-3)

If Troy State and Marshall hadn't pulled out, LSU's strength of schedule component would have improved DRASTICALLY, partially because Western Illinois' wins only count if they're over I-A teams but ALL their losses count equally. Unfortunately, some teams are afraid to play us coughVirginiaTechcough, so AD Skip Bertman is scrambling to fill the holes in the schedule as they arise.

They gave this "Top 10 Things that Hurt USC's SOS and Quality Win's" last night on ESPN. I will say this. Working within this system then USC deserves #3 and OU deserves #1.

However stepping outside of it and viewing all the factors that shouldn't matter going into this........this system fucking sucks.

Bob Stoops was right "We are #1....within this system...." within the system Bob.
