Kerry uses swear word, offends Chief of Staff

(12-07) 16:05 PST WASHINGTON (AP) --

John Kerry used profane language to assess President Bush's Iraq policy, and Bush's chief of staff said Sunday the Democratic presidential candidate was out of line.

The Massachusetts senator uttered a profanity in an interview in the latest Rolling Stone magazine to express his dismay over Bush's handling of Iraq.

When asked in the interview about the success of rival candidate Howard Dean, whose anti-war message has resounded with supporters, Kerry responded: "When I voted for the war, I voted for what I thought was best for the country. Did I expect Howard Dean to go off to the left and say, `I'm against everything?' Sure. Did I expect George Bush to f--- it up as badly as he did? I don't think anybody did."

The expletive drew a rebuke from White House, which suggested an apology might be in order.

"That's beneath John Kerry," the president's chief of staff, Andrew Card, said on CNN's "Late Edition."

"I'm very disappointed that he would use that kind of language," Card said. "I'm hoping that he's apologizing at least to himself, because that's not the John Kerry that I know."

The Kerry campaign said the Massachusetts senator had no regrets.

"John Kerry saw combat up close, and he doesn't mince words when it comes to politicians who put ideological recklessness ahead of American troops," said spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter. "I think the American people would rather Card and the rest of the White House staff spend more time on fixing Bush's flawed policy in Iraq than on Sen. Kerry's language."

On the 62nd anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Kerry laid a wreath in remembrance at the Navy base in Coronado, Calif., where he trained before shipping out to Vietnam, where he was wounded and was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star with combat V. Kerry, a swift boat commander in the war, was joined by his daughter, Vanessa, and two crew mates who served with him in Southeast Asia.

During his CNN appearance, Card also opined, albeit briefly, on the front-runner in the race for the Democratic nomination.

"Howard Dean is a good governor in Vermont who is no longer governor," said Card. "So he would not be my choice for president of the United States."

I don't know what's better, Card being so taken aback or the Kerry representative saying that it's okay because HE SERVED (HOLY FUCK) and thus he's qualified to use salty language.

Yeah, I always hated that attitude as well ("Only people who served in the military really have the righ to critcize anything relating to it, dang it!"). Oh well.

And I'd LOVE to see a conservative try and defend that attitude on here, because the analogy to smarks ("You're not a wrestler, you can't critcize our matches!") practically WRITES ITSELF.

John Kerry served!?!

Why is that such a surprise? I'm not saying this as a sarcastic Kerry fan (don't really like the guy to be honest), I'm seriously wondering, because I've never seen/heard the guy do anything that would make me think "Man, there's no way that guy ever served in the military."

Yeah, that helps. Maybe you just have a higher opinion of people in military service than I do.

*sigh* Kerry has mentioned that he was in Vietnam so often that it has become a running gag on teh board to say "WHAT? KERRY WAS IN VIETNAM?" everytime it is mentioned similar to the FAUX NEWS joke and so on.

Have you listened to Kerry speak? He harps on about being a veteran.

The "OMG JOHN KERRY SERVED NO GET REAL" running gag is because if he talks about it off the campaign as much as he does on the campaign, well...

"Dear, could you hand this war hero the potatoes? Thanks."

Ah. See, I don't follow the democratic candidates enough. <_< Thanks for explaining, though.

Also, you realize that at the time Kerry and other guys were in the service it was because many of them had no choice, right?

I mean, shit on the volunteer servicemen if you like, they're getting their ass shot up while you sit and complain about what they do, but it wasn't always like that.

No no, I didn't mean it like I activley hate them. I meant that a lot of people have this unrealistic "Any member of the military, past or present, can do no wrong." value they hold all members of the military to, and I can say as a part of a military family that it's just not true.

I think Kerry brought it up this time as a way of saying "while people that never served in combat send soldiers into it, I've served in combat, and I don't think combat should be thought of so quickly." I kinda agree with him.

Wow, he said "fuck." WHOOP-DEE-FUCKING-DOO.

I have a long-standing theory on obscenities in public discourse ---

If you are using profanity, you probably already lost the debate.

Awesome stuff. I advocate more profanity on the campaign trail. THAT'S how you can connect with the common man, cursing the other candidates out of the room.

"Your Iraq plan fuckin' sucks!"

"Man, fuck you!"

"Aw HELLS NO. You did NOT just say that shit."

"I said that shit, what now!"

(they brawl)

As much as it pains me to admit this, Mike's probably right. Using curse words in something like political debate just makes you come off as ignorant and not having a very strong point in the first place.

I think one can mate profanity and intelligent discussion. We do it here, don't we?

Sure, but this is a pretty casual atmosphere. It shouldn't compare to an interview with a Presidential elect, where there should be a certain standard of conduct.

(Nevermind that probably doesn't include being interviewed by Rolling Stone in the first place.)

Shane fuckin' Douglas for fuckin' President!

...actually...imagine the foreign affairs if "The Franchise" was president...we'd be nuked back into the stone age while ol' Shane flashes the Triple Threat symbol...

So now the story is Kerry saying a naughty word? Good lord.

And what is up with this line?

The expletive drew a rebuke from White House, which suggested an apology might be in order.

Quit being a major-league crybaby about this and just laugh at Kerry. I think this carefully placed expletive is just a calculated way of getting "the young people" to vote for him.

“Woah, dude, he said the “f” word. He must be one of us”...

A difference I suppose, Kerry KNEW he was talking to the media and they were recording what he was saying while Bush was an idiot (surprised anyone?) and didn't realize the mic was on.

Realistically, though, it could have "slipped" out. It's not like everyone else in America doesn't cuss like it doesn't matter.

Well in that case that was damn stupid *shrug* and I don't think Kerry would do something that stupid.

I don't know. If he had said "Oops, can you take that off the record" or something to the effect, I sincerely doubt they would have done it. After all, this issue of Rolling Stone is now a hot item because of this article (theoretically).

It really depends on the atmosphere; if it was casual, it's possible (even likely) that this was just a casual slip. If not, perhaps he IS a moron.

I think it's refreshing for someone in damn stick up the ass government to finally say what the hell they are thinking instead of letting some speech writer tell them what to think and say.

He should go all Chris Rock from "Head of State" and just unload. In fact, he should drive around in a big tour bus with 50 Cent and keep calling himself "Kerry Man" or something while cussing out candiates.

Everyone curses and it's nice to see one of these bastards is actually human. Don't come up with an excuse, just come back with "If Bush doesn't like it, fuck him."

God, lets go all gang war in this election!

I guess Zappa was right when he said that most rock journalism is people who can't write interviewing people who can't talk for people who can't read...
