I'm being serious........

Recommended Posts

Ok now seriously. What the hell is the media's problem with OU? Everytime I turn on ESPN they have some snide comment to make about OU.

Like tonight....they're talking about the awards that were given in Orlando.

Jason White wins QB of the year. They say something to the effect of "Oddly enough Jason White wins......" as if it's just odd that the QB with the best record in college football should somehow win the best QB award.

Then whenever they are talking about the other awards and Lehman and Strait win awards they comment "That's nice...a couple of Oklahoma boys" in the most sarcastic tone ever.

I don't think I'm making something out of nothing here. Every freaking sports station except the bias Oklahoma ones have something bad to say about OU.

Then there are the people that are absolutely demonizing OU because they are in the BCS title game. Acting like it is OU's fault that they are in the BCS game. Like Bob Stoops paid that computer off to get OU into that game. When in actuality OU has nothing to do with being in that game. The only thing they are at fault for is posting huge numbers througout the season to run there ranking up. But nobody can blame them for playing hard. Oh wait they can.

When it was the middle of the season and OU was running roughshod over every team in there path I heard people bitching about that. Saying that OU was unsportsmen like and shit like that. And wait.....when they don't go an blow there opponent out like they did when they faced Colorado it's "You bunch of losers! You could only win by a few touchdowns! Boo!"

I just don't get it. I'm still new to college sports. Is this some kind of bias against OU itself or just a bias against any team that is good? I just don't understand the venom that is spewed towards this team.

Dama, USA has a history of hating the best and strongest teams. I hated the Rams when they were winning so much, I hated the Red Wings, I hated everyone winning too much. I hate HHH for this reason too. Don't take it personally. OU is a hell of a team so they should be prepared for some firestorm.

IMO, I heard the Jason White "Oddly enough.. " comment and I think that was more along the lines of Eli Manning winning the "Best all around player" award. In a well if he's the best all around player how can he not be the best player at his position. But of course thats just my opinion.

Yeah but I don't see nearly as much venom directed at LSU or USC. Though I'm wondering if the situation was flip flopped and OU was left out if people would be all up on someone else's ass.

But they've been against OU all season. And then when they finally lose the people explode and start the "HAHA! The big bully was toppled! FINALLY! HAHAHA! MY LIFE IS COMPLETE!" I really don't understand the big bully comments and "the invincible giant has felt pain! DIE STOOPS! HAHAHA!"

I almost expect an ESPN sportscaster to pull out an OU helmet and set it ablaze one of these days.

I wonder if everyone hated Nebraska this much in 95........

That crossed my mind to. But that kind of crap happens all the time. That's why awards shows are stupid. Each award seems to contradict another award.

Yeah and Jason White won AP college player of the year.

They should go crazy about how there's a split college player of the year! OMG controversy~!

Not that its any consolation, but I hated Nebraska in 95 but basically because it was a team filled with a bunch of ex-convicts like Lawrence Phillips and Christian Peter.

Dama, like I said, don't take it personally. The sportscasters are bitter jaded former players who wished their teams got the respect OU got or even the individual respect.

I'm trying not to take it personally. But dammit it pisses me off. It makes me wonder if the rest of America feels that way. If I wear an OU hat to SoCal am I going to get lynched?

It also pisses me off b/c the constant bashing diminishes their accomplishments to the general public and I guess sort of makes them less legitimate to the die hard sports fan.

I mean what if someone were to turn on Sportscenter and hear all this BCS controversy. And then hear them demonizing OU for it. They'd think OU was at fault and be like "fuck those fucking redneck cowboys from Oklahoma."

And another thing. Angelslayer said something about the media being on OU's ass since the Switzer days. Anythng specific there? Anyone care to shed some light?

Considering I'm in SoCal, I think you'd be fine.

OU lost its last game. Can't be national champion if you lost the conference title game.

Why does losing late hurt more than losing early?

And why does losing to a rather good team (K. State) hurt more than losing to a barely bowl-eligible team (Cal)?

Heck, who on God's Earth DID USC beat this season?

I mean, LSU beat Ole Miss and Georgia TWICE.

OU slaughtered Texas.

USC beat...

Eli Manning had 1 year at QB in where Ole Miss actually had a good season has a team. They underachieved the other years.

Nebraska's 1994 team received criticism for beating out what many people consider the better Penn St. team.

It's just backlash, that's all. We're still less than a week removed from OU getting blown out. The media spent the entire year cupping OU's balls, and pretty much rightfully so. Everybody on the ABC and ESPN broadcasting teams picked Oklahoma to go to the title game all year long. Shit, Oregon got ragged on just as bad when they fell apart 4 games into the season after getting a Sports Illustrated cover. When the team that everyone's been calling phenomenal all year long takes a hit, all the potential criticism and disappointment spills out.

It's nothing personal. They lost big 6 days ago, and it's their time to get ragged on.

I think it's because stories about Oklahoma during the season were humdrum ("Oh, they won again by the way") and now there's something to actually discuss. Makes things much more interesting, I think. Yet another reason I dislike super-dominant teams. They make things so boring.

They lost the conference, that is all. They see Oklahoma as the Nebraska team that got hammered into the ground by Miami because they lost the conference. Granted, those Huskers didn't even GO to the damn title game and still got in but it happens.

If Oklahoma had lost the game BEFORE the conference title game and still won the conference, their is no backlash. It would just be "Oklahoma is not immortal as we once thought" talk instead of "they didn't win their conference, they aren't ranked in the top two of either poll so why are they going" talk.

People would be reacting the same damn way if LSU was undefeated going in against Georiga and had lost their title game by four scores. Only then, we'd have FOUR teams in the BSC mess and USC would have been ranked #1 in the AP/COACHES and yet #4 in the BSC, thus causing small riots. So in truth, Oklahoma was the second worse case situation.

See, now you can just say "It could have been worse".

USC didn't win any conference title game. That's the point i tried to make in one of the other college football threads. It's not and even playing field. If Oklahoma went by USC's standards, then, yes, they did win their conference. Until all conferences have title games, or none of them have title games, this point is not as important.

It's a dual edged sword, though ... if two teams win their conference, the one that won a title game would most likely get extra accolades for doing so, and would thus get the nod over a team that didn't have to win a title game.

Plus, OU got absolutely shelled in that game - if they'd lost by a lesser margin, it'd be easier to stomach them being in the title game. In my eyes, the best two teams in college football are USC and LSU, so those two teams should be playing for it all.

Yes but what happens if OU wins the National Title? People are still going to be up on there ass and giving them shit for it. It's absurd.

And they went undefeated through the season technically. If not every team has a conference championship then it shouldn't count towards anything. Unless every team has a conference title. Because if we are going by USC's standards to be conference champ....OU was the Big XII conference champ. But they have a game to decide it....unlike USC.

I will never understand the "If you lose lately then you suck. But if you lose to a dead last team in your first game...it's ok......."

What if the situation was flip flopped? Same scores, same games.

But OU's loss to K-State was there first game of the season and USC's loss to Cal was there last game of the season.

Oklahoma would still be #1 and USC would be the ones considered unworthy. See what I'm saying? It' bullshit. You have to look at the entire season.

Yet they still have a chance to be National Champs. And like it's been said. It will go down in the record books as OU being national champs. There won't be an asteriks next to there name....it will be OU. Or you know.....LSU.

There needs to be a playoff system, all major conferences need title games to enter the BSC national title game, would be my solution.

Well until everyone has a conference championship don't get your panties in a twist b/c OU didn't win there conference. Because if they were a Pac-10 team....then they would've won the conference.

What's the big deal about the Jason White comment?

It's just a "hey wow that was totally unexpected" sarcastic comment, stop being paranoid.

If there were no conference championship games at all, USC would be in the Sugar Bowl. That hurt USC.

I will never understand the "If you lose lately then you suck. But if you lose to a dead last team in your first game...it's ok......."

First, a good team should be more prepared as the season wears on. Their attack should be tighter, more streamlined. Late-season games are when a team should be at their best.

Second, it wasn't simply a close loss late in the season. The Sooners got ROLLED, flat-out dominated, in the Conference Championship, their most important game of the year, when they should have been best prepared.

Also, why can't you carry this over to the National Championship? "Well, LSU won the game but Oklahoma's overall season was better so they get the trophy."
