Yoga...

Recommended Posts

I have heard lots about Yoga and how good it is for you. I've been told it makes you buff and helps you mentally.

Is it worth to try it?

It seems that I'm pretty much the main yoga proponent on this board but I must stay that yoga has helped my life quite a bit. Not only does yoga help you increase flexibility, it builds muscle endurance while you improve your breathing, and helps you to relax and think in a calm environment. It's helped me recently in fact, I was involved in a car accident and due to wearing my seatbelt, coupled with my well developed neck muscles, I escaped only a little shaken up.

You should be able to find how-to stuff pretty much anywhere, even a quick google search will find you some basics. I personally do my yoga at home. I find classes overated, if only due to the cost. And lastly, take your time. Don't expect to be folding yourself in half right away. Don't force anything and cause yourself damage.

I've been throwing around the idea of yoga myself. I'm already kinda flexible, so that helps with the whole damned thing. Also, women would love to hear about me being able to fold myself in half, I'd imagine.

Yoga is a lot of fun, if you can stand the fairly respectable amount of pain that comes with being a newbie at it. One of the funniest things in the world is watching some buffed-up body builder or hot-shot black belt dojo rat go into their first yoga session, and you can almost see the exact moment that their ego is broken. It's great. (Plus, yoga classes always have some hot chicks in them.)

I can't even bend over and touch my toes with my knees locked, so I'd die in a Yoga session. I'm plenty strong, but a rubberband I am not.

Ditto about flexability, but I've done Yoga a few times, and it's very relaxing. I can't really explain it, but it's just a great feeling when you do it for about an hour or so and clear your mind.

My mom is moving to California for two months to become a Bikram yoga instructor. Essentially, it's yoga...in a room that's been heated to about 105-110 degrees. She talked me into going to class with her once...and I nearly died. I wore a grey shirt there, and it was black when the class was over. Apparently, I showed up to the class where it was two hours, as opposed to an hour and a half. She's been going for over a year now, and she's lost around 20 pounds, without changing her eating habits in the slightest, plus, she's getting pretty cut.

But be warned: all she ever wants to talk about now is yoga...if you're going to get into it deep, it's not just a hobby, it's a lifestyle.

I'd prefer to study martial arts over yoga... seems more useful. And some of them do promote a good deal of flexibility. Like, uh... the drunken styles.
