San Diego Chargers keeping Marty Schottenheimer

Recommended Posts

Schottenheimer will return for third season in San Diego

Dec. 23, 2003

SportsLine.com wire reports

SAN DIEGO -- Marty Schottenheimer will return as coach of the San Diego Chargers next year even though they've lost 19 of their past 24 games.

Tired of speculation about Schottenheimer's future, general manager A.J. Smith said Tuesday that Schottenheimer will return for his third year with the Chargers. San Diego is 3-12 and tied with Arizona for the NFL's worst record.

"The constant questions were becoming a distraction for us, so I felt it was time to end the speculation once and for all," Smith said in a statement. "After the season we will assess the entire organization from top to bottom and address the issues that led to this very disappointing season.

"I believe in the benefits of stability and continuity. We haven't given him enough time or enough talent on the field."

The Chargers are 11-20 in two seasons under Schottenheimer, the NFL's ninth-winningest coach. This is just his second losing record in his 17 full seasons as an NFL head coach.

Schottenheimer is due $5 million over the next two seasons. The Washington Redskins, who fired Schottenheimer after he coached them in 2001, will pay $500,000 of his salary next year.

Why is Schottemheimer so revered? His Browns teams came close but never won. His Chiefs teams never won, and came less close. His Redskins teams and now his Chargers teams are bad despite having some decent talent. Why are teams so desperate to retain this guy?

Bet the league's pissed. Golden chance for the Chargers to fire an old guy long in the rotation(why?) and make the league look good by hiring a "minority" [pronounced "black"] head coach. And they're not taking it.

While I don't think Marty would be leading them to Houston right now, the Chargers were shot in the off-season when they cut loose Seau and Harrison. I understand that the way the NFL's salary cap works these days it was just not plausible, but that D is wretched.

So is the one minority coach that's going to be hired Dennis Green, Lovie Smith or Ted Cottrell?

I think Smith has a good chance, and if Green wants to come back, he'll find a spot.

In a way, I can understand a team not wanting to hire a minority coach.

Because when you have to fire them the OMG THE TEAM IS RACIST card seems to come up.

It did with Art Shell, Ray Rhodes and Dennis Green and even Tony Dungy...

this is why Marty is none as Marty Chokenheimer.

I take complete offense to your implied relationship between this over rated crock of shit Coach and Myself.

So what spots are open for next season then?

-Atlanta.

-New York Giants

are confirmed...

ESPN says Jauron is sticking around in Chi Town...Arizona is too dumb to get a new coach...

I hope Lovie goes to Atlanta.

Not confirmed, but having a decent chance of happening:

Buffalo

Oakland

Miami

Arizona

Cleveland

Jauron staying in Chicago is the worst thing that could happen to that franchise. Well, actually, second worst to them retaining John Shoop as offensive coordinator.
