Use Your Illusion 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2005 I've seen some anime Street Fighter and Fatal Fury, which have all been really, really good. Other than that, I did watch Astro Boy back in the 80's, however I was too young to really remember all that much of it. I do remember the big giant blue robot with horns on his head that was kicking the ever-loving piss out of everything to solidify himself as the greatest robot in the Universe. Quite awesome. Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted April 17, 2005 I've seen some anime Street Fighter and Fatal Fury, which have all been really, really good. Other than that, I did watch Astro Boy back in the 80's, however I was too young to really remember all that much of it. I do remember the big giant blue robot with horns on his head that was kicking the ever-loving piss out of everything to solidify himself as the greatest robot in the Universe. Quite awesome. I've seen the first? Street FIghter II movie and clips of the Fatul Fury stuff. Street Fighter II I really enjoyed. The scene with Chun Li in the shower and the subsequent fight with Vega is up there for best testerone filled moments of film ever. If only Chun Li did her upside down flying kick with the camera posistioned from the roof. Oh well, al least Vega got what he deserved for picking on my girl. One of my favourite Astroboy episodes. Myself, RavishingRickRudo and Ohtani of TIme are big marks for that episode. I got to relive those episodes in the Japanese dub and they were outstanding. The blue robot goes by different names. In Canada he was called Commonturk. In Japan he was called I believe "Brute". Tons of imagination/coolness/ethical questions which is something I'm big on when I'm watching movies or TV. I just wish it lasted longer. Even 2 episodes was too short. Every robot was memoarable. I still feel sorry for the robot orphanage caretaker who unfortunately met his demise. Here's is a picture of Commonturk or Brute with Astroboy's sister. I'm not sure what his American name was off the top of my head.
Use Your Illusion 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2005 After doing some poking around, I believe his name in America was 'Bruton'. So not that big a stretch from his original Japanese name.
Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted April 17, 2005 After doing some poking around, I believe his name in America was 'Bruton'. So not that big a stretch from his original Japanese name. Wouldn't mind poking around with Livian. Yes, I am the most perverted person ever. Not a big stretch at all for the name. Commonturk is my favourite name given to the big guy though. An example that at times you can actually improve on an original version. The original Japanese version however is still heads and tails above the rest. Do you remember any other Astro episodes besides the greatest robot in the world fights?

Guest Monday Night Jericho Report post Posted April 18, 2005 Hey guys, I'm about to purchase some anime and was wondering if I could get any opinions on any of the following: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Ghost In The Shell (I've heard this is essential) Perfect Blue Kiki's Delivery Service Castle In The Sky The Castle of Cagliostro Ninja Scroll Akira Kurosawa's Dreams ...and of course anything else you recommend. Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted April 19, 2005 Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind I've heard positive things about. I have no idea about different versions and all that kind of stuff though. Ghost In The Shell (I've heard this is essential) I don't know if I'd call it essential but I do remember enjoying it awhile back. I've been hearing positive things about the new Ghost in the Shell Tv series. Perfect Blue -- Fantastic. Some scenes are pretty disturbing so watch out. It's a suspense flick and it works. Sticks out as different. Oh and try out Millenium Actress which is excellent as well and done by the same director. Beautifully animated with beautiful scenery from all sorts of different times. It is a love story but even if you're not a big fan of love stories check this out. It's definitely different. Kiki's Delivery Service -- Very, very good. The only problem is that I see it being a movie that a lot of guys won't like because it's more of a flick for the younger set. But it does what it does well. Castle in THe Sky -- Very, very good. Nice adventure feel to it. The Castle of Cogliostro -- Supposed to be excellent. An adventure stlye movie this was an ispiration for Speilberg. If you like Indiana Jones and who doesn't than you should like this. Ninja Scroll -- Gets unfairly criticized for certain reasons. It's the eyeopener movie for anime in that it has a lot of shock factor though I suppose it wouldn't be as shocking today with everyhing being more violent and such. Don't watch it front of your mother! as there are disturbing scenes in this as well. Very imaginative and just plain cool for many folks which is why it's so popular. If you do end up liking this you might want to try Wicked City. I don't even know what Kurosawa's Dreams is. I don't keep up on much stuff anymore. Oh man, I copied this right before I typed this and it was a good thing I did because something screwed up and my post didn't post. Other Reccs -- I really liked the end of the Tiger Mask series I got from Lynch but I think I already mentioned that. Highlight of the Night got some of these tapes from Highspots who I think got them off of Lynch but I don't know if he watched them yet. Physcology filled fights! Dragonball (not Z)-- I was starting to get into this just because of the imagination and humour which really surprised me on how much I liked that part of it. Original Record of Lodoss War -- Wasn't into it at the beginning but once I got into I really enjoyed it. The sub is way better than the dub in this one. City Hunter -- NOt the best series I've ever but from the limited bits I've seen it's always good quality fun. A comedy series somewhat. 3 X 3 Eyes -- I just loved this one. Everything was done well. I believe there may have been two versions of this. I watched the original one but I think I only actually watched half of the series. You should post this at smarkschoice.com too. There are a couple of hardcore anime fans there.

Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted April 19, 2005 Can't you go to an astroboy board for all this stuff? +1 I'm a poster at www.astroboy-online.com The main purpose here it to spread the love of Astroboy/Samurai Jack to some people who may not have seen it before. If only 1 person becomes a fan than my sacrifice and unrelenting dedication to this thread have been worth it. I know I was put on Earth for a greater purpose and this here is my calling. Plus I got a loyal fan base now as several people have told me hjow much they love this thread (check out the amount of views per amount of replies; everybody is reading this thread!), 10 women a night and my own toy line. I only wish everyone could be so lucky.

Guest Ray Report post Posted April 20, 2005 Finished Episode One. It was excellent. Noticed a completely unexpected tribute to Ben-Hur with the "No water for him!" line. Right. Ray, if you notice any tributes feel free to mention them. This makes me wonder - is there a website that lists all of the tributes and references in SJ? that would be interesting. I never found one when I searched before but I never did too extensive a search. On tvtome.com there are some listed. It's been a while but I finally got back to watching my Samurai Jack DVD. A lot of things came up and I sort of got sidetracked. Anyway I watched "Jack and the Warrior Woman" and it was a good one. I love how episodes will have themes and backgrounds based on different cultures and whatnot. Liked the arabian theme they had going here. Even though I basically figured out who the woman was before it was revealed, it was still a chilling, powerful moment when Jack himself realizes it's Aku. Also watched "Jack and the Three Blind Archers" again, this time with the audio commentary on, which was quite good. Lots of interesting information, such as the concept for the episode coming from an old Batman comic book with three blind monks. They also talk about Kurosawa films and how they're influenced by them, and mention that this episode has tributes to Conan The Barbarian and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Just a great, great episode in every way.

Just a great, great episode in every way. Sweet. You just got two episodes left now I think. Like I mentioned previously these are my 3 favourites out of the first season: Episode III -- Called the First Fight? Episode VII -- The Blind Archors Episode XI -- Jack and THe Scotsman I liked the Warrior Woman epiode. Not the best but pretty fun. The blind archors is just plain cool the whole way through. There are just way, way too many mark out moments in here. Jack slicing that arrow in half by lifting his sword up with his thumb, the video game almost Zelda like ending where the three achors shoot themseves, the onslaught of arrows when Jack just tests the archors by putting his foot over the magical "line" and the old grizzled veteran in the beginning telling a "fable". If only one of those things happened during a show I might be happy afterwards but multiple to infinity and you got yourself something's that truly memoarable. Did you see "Jack Under THe Sea" episode? Jack goes something like "Now I beg of you to trust me (pause) as I once trusted you." when everyone else is running away from Aku and they are taking Jack with him. Does that phrase ring a bell for anyone?
