"New" Astroboy trailer 2003 series

Recommended Posts

Fave SJ moments?

I have a few:

One from Samurai vs. Samurai, season four. Three bounty hunters walk up behind Jack as "Da Samurai" watches him. "Da Samurai" takes a drink of something, and the bountry hunters attack Jack, who is just as quickly in the air, sword already drawn, at which point the scene slows down into super slow motion with really cool music, and "Da Samurai" does a spit take, and by the time he's done wiping his mouth the hunters are down.

2nd is Jack vs. Zombies. Even as Jack nearly escapes the graveyark, Aku appears and steals Jack's sword. What ensues is one of the best chase/fight scenes ever, as Jack really can't HURT Aku, but would just love to get away. He manages to escape, for a while, until Aku basically explodes into a wave of darkness. Quite a fight ensues as jack fights off this amorphous THING, until finally Aku burrows underground and just erupts from underneath Jack.

Episode #32, dunno the name. After Jack beats the wind demons, he asks his previous escort if he has passed the test. The insect just murmurs "yes" and nods behind jack, and Jack turns around. There's the gigantic Bird/Pteronodon thing with it's wings stretched out, just an amazing visual.

These are almost all solitary images I can describe as my favorite. There are other entire SEGMENTS that were my favorite, but I can't describe in any detail. The Rave scene from the rave episode. The light and dark scene from Jack vs. the Ninja, the entire Maurader fight. Stuff I had never seen before, not from America OR Japan.

Samurai Jack - 2nd Season's Full Announcement; S3's In The Works

Posted by David Lambert

2/18/2005

We've known the long-range DVD plans for The Cartoon Network since last August, and so far each item has come through as scheduled. Another one of these was announced late yesterday: Samurai Jack - Season 2. Here's the announcement from distributor Warner Home Video:

From Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Star Wars: Clone Wars, comes the Emmy Award winning Samurai Jack - Season 2 on DVD. The series follows the tales of a young samurai cast far into the future by the evil shape-shifting wizard Aku. Join Samurai Jack on his quest to return to the past and undo the destruction that Aku has wrought upon the land. With award-winning artwork and intricate, action-packed plots, the many journeys of Samurai Jack are a must for any fan's collection.

Episodes include: (14) Jack Learns to Jump (15) Jack vs the Worm, The Metal-Eaters, & The Fairy (16) Jack and the Smackback (17) Jack and the Scotsman II (18) Jack and the Ultra-Robots (19) Jack Remembers the Past (20) Jack and the Monks (21) Jack and the Dragon (22) Jack vs the Five Hunters (23) Jack vs Demango (24) Jack Is Naked (25) Jack and the Spartans (26) Jack's Shoes

Arriving May 24th in a 2-DVD set, this runs 296 minutes for a $29.98 SRP. Look for English, French, and Spanish to be supported with Dolby Surround Stereo 2.0 tracks and with subtitles as well. Video is 4x3 fullframe. This release is closed captioned for the hearing impaired. The box art is below. This Fall should see the release of Samurai Jack - Season 3 as well, if the plans we've had since last August continue to hold true. Stay tuned for info about that!

WP --- Watched the first episode of the 80s Astroboy about a week ago. It was a great ep with everything getting set into place. Lots of important stuff like the relationship between Toby and his father, why Toby requests his father to make a robot, why they have to go to America, seeing Toby's father not take the Omega factor from Skunk, the roots of Atlas' charactor and the different influences he occurs in his childhood in the form of his master, Skunk and his "mother" Vivian (, how Atlas (who has been implanted with the Omega Factor) is born and even how Toby's dog warms up to Astroboy after not liking him at first.

Great ep which shows a great spirit for imagination as well. Stuff like walking hat hangers, the route you have to take to get to Guiss inside his house and one of me favourite moments of the series. How Astro's birth plans are duplicated which is of course the same plans Atlas is born more. These minature robot bees fly into the building and take pictures of the plans before flying out. They than proceed to fly back to Guiss where he takes part of the bees apart, puts the parts into a pool of something and uses a magnifying glass to read the plans. Super!

Kind of sad news. Here's an article that's got a mention of Astroboy in it. On the bright side it serves Sony or whoever right for giving Astro an attitude.

ICv2 2004 Anime Awards, Part 2

Phenomenon, Flop of the Year

January 14, 2005

The ICv2 Awards are an on-line continuation of a tradition that began in Internal Correspondence, the print predecessor of ICv2, over a decade ago. These awards are given as a way of reflecting on the events of the year and to draw some conclusions from them. The ICv2 Awards are based entirely on the business impact of events on retailers, as determined by the editorial staff of ICv2.

Anime Phenomenon of 2004 -- Anime Goes Late Night

TV exposure is a key driver of anime sales in the U.S. and in 2004 the nature of that exposure changed profoundly as the Cartoon Network dropped its late afternoon Toonami block, which had been a key element in making the various Dragon Ball series mass market hits. The Cartoon Network replaced Toonami with the Meguzi Block, which sounds Japanese, but which so far consists of ersatz anime like Megas XLR and anime-influenced superhero series. Reportedly the Cartoon Network was concerned that the audience for the anime series was skewing older than its late afternoon advertisers wanted.

The Cartoon Network remains one of key anime venues in the U.S., but it is the Network's Toonami block, which currently airs on Saturday nights and especially the late night Adult Swim block that are the key TV sales drivers for anime. Inuyasha, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Wolf's Rain, .hack//SIGN, Full Metal Alchemist and Case Closed have all benefited from late night exposure on the Cartoon Network.

Another key late night anime venue is Anime Unleashed, begun by Tech TV and continued on the G4 video game-oriented network that acquired Tech TV. G4 has a built-in tech-savvy, teen-and-older audience that is a great fit for anime. In 2004 Anime Unleashed really hit its stride with a number of hot series (primarily from Geneon) including Last Exile, Gungrave, Read or Die the TV, and Gad Guard.

In addition to after-dark exposure on Cartoon Network and G4, anime also reached an older audience via MTV, which ran the Heat Guy J series and is planning to show the hip-hop-influenced Tokyo Tribes anime series next year. Given the changing pattern of TV exposure for anime in the U.S. in 2004, it's no wonder that there was no break-out Dragon Ball/Pokemon, youth-oriented mass market hit--though on the positive side there was solid growth of an older, more sophisticated anime audience, which made its presence felt in the increased attendance at anime cons and in strong sales of more sophisticated anime titles such as Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Wolf's Rain and Inuyasha.

Flop of the Year -- Retro Anime

Japan has experienced a major boom in nostalgia in recent years that evidenced itself in modern remakes of number of anime series produced in the 1960s and 1970s. Although successful in Japan, these revivals have not fared well in the U.S. Most disappointing was the new CGI Astro Boy series, which received a brief trial on the Kids WB Network. Created by the great Osamu Tezuka, Astro Boy was considerably more successful during its first run in the U.S. in the 1960s than it was during 2004. In spite of first-rate computer animation and interesting humanistic plotlines, the new Astro Boy has made almost no impression here in the States.

Two other anime revivals, Cyborg 009 and Kikaider, based on properties created by Tezuka's contemporary Shotaro Ishinomori, have also failed to catch on with youthful audiences in the U.S. Perhaps it was the "old school" character design or a lack of consistent exposure, but retro anime series from the 60s and 70s flopped in the U.S. in 2004.

For Part 1 of the ICv2 2004 Anime Awards, including Top Anime Company and Top Anime Property, see "ICv2 2004 Anime Awards, Part 1."

And for the previous year of the ICv2's Comic Awards, please see "ICv2 2003 Anime Awards, Part 1" and "ICv2 2003 Anime Awards, Part 2."

And people thought Buzz Bunny was bad. Take a look at Sony's (USA) doing here:

Astroboy's Character´s names in Mexico & Crossover!

Taken from the forums on www.astroboy-online.com

Hi,

My nick is Naomi (or Nanami). I'm from Mexico. I´ve been an astroboy fan since I was 9, when I saw the 80s version for first time. In that version some of the character names changed a bit:

Prof Elefun= Prof. Hulefante

Uran= Lucero

Walrus= Prof. Morsa

Jump= Maromas

and others were the same

Astro= Astro

Atlas= Atlas

Tobi= Tobi

In the new series the characters names are the same: Astro, Tobio, Zoran, O´shay, Tenma, etc.

I´m also a big fan from Tenma (he´s my favorite character after Astro), and after saw Evangelion I imagined a crossover that is relationed with Tenma and Gendou, so I invite you to read it and give me your comments:

It´s in Spanish and english, but the spanish version is better cause it´s my origin language and sometimes I write very bad in english, despite it was corrected by a friend of mine, the meaning of some words maybe changed a bit. I´ll hope you like it.

See ya!

Unsensitive Project

by Naomi

2023… Tomoeda University, where the India was until 1999

Between four brick walls that conform the main classroom is sit a red short - haired girl talking with a thin black short - haired boy.

- Shinji, you moron!. You forgot the lunch!

- I’m sorry Asuka

- Forget it, it was a joke, look!, I have it

- Hehe, I knew it

- Good morning Asuka, hi Shinji. Where is Kozue? – The University’s teacher asked them when he entered and went to the writing desk

- I’m here Mr. Kazama, ah!. I’m sorry to be late – said a brown eyed, brown haired girl as she got running in the classroom and seated near Asuka

- Now you three are here, I want to notify you that you have a new classmate since today

- Cool!, another man at the university!

- He will arrive in one hour, so meanwhile let’s start with today’s class, let’s talk about DNA in animals organisms, like mammals…

- Asuka, How do you feel the new guy will look like?, I hope he’s handsome

- I don’t have any idea, but I hope Kozue does

- Shut up!, I’m trying to pay attention – Shinji told them in low voice, but the teacher stopped his chair because in that moment he didn’t want to listen noises from them.

- Kozue, you’re distracting your classmates again. When are you going to understand?, we have an important task, if you didn’t study the DNA, you will not be able to help the scientist with animal clonation, otherwise you’ll be wasting your time. The youth must reconstruct the world and also…

A dark haired guy made his appearance in the door of the hall. The Teacher presented him with the others.

- You must be Kaworu Hirata. Welcome to the Tomoeda University

- Thank you very much teacher – Hirata said in a polite way

- They are your classmates: Kozue Mitsui, and Asuka and Shinji Langley, you can sit there… Well, we were having a

class about the animal clonation, I hope you know about the theme

- Of course Sir

- Then you will not have any objection to put your knowledge in practice. so we will go to the laboratory

- But Mr. Kazama, what about the theory?

Mrs. Langley, I thought that you didn’t matter, because you were chatting with Ms. Mitsui, so I’ve decided it’s better to see both, the theory and the practice. Bring your timms*1 in case you want to take notes.

The new student seemed to be expert in the subject, with a little effort he obtained the objective of the lesson, leaving surprised the Principal

- Magnificent work Mr. Hirata. Well, the time has been finished for us for today. I hope to have more assignments from your part tomorrow youngsters – The teacher left them alone in the classroom. Kaworu didn’t take much in following him without saying a word to his classmates

- Seems a strange boy – Asuka commented

- It must be because is his first day, but I never had saw him before, maybe he comes from the Occidental Sector A – Shinji said

- It could be. He looks shy and serious, but he is very handsome

- I also think the same about, Kozue – Said Asuka

- They are going to start again with their non-understandable talks of women. Better I should go from here– Shinji said in his habitual mood

- The school! I had forgotten that I would give a review of chemistry to a student. See ya!

- Good Luck Kozue! – Shinji told her and as soon as he was alone with Asuka he looked her – And then?

- And then what?

- The new guy is more handsome than I?

- hm… I prefer to say that he is more attractive and stronger. You followed him as looking as weak as when I knew you, I’ll give you some vitamins

- The feeding subject again… ok, you can give me the poison

- You’re still an idiot. Well honey, I’ll see you after the class

Asuka and Shinji continued with their working of citizens of the Oriental Sector. Shinji was the teacher of the third group, a group of kids of between 9 and 13 years old kids. That day he had to give them the Contemporary History subject

- Okay kids, what do you know about the third impact?

- That a meteorite rain fell to the Earth and destroyed all the terrestrial life – Atal commented

- My father told me that the force of the meteors caused changes in the pressure of the humans and because of that the humans exploded in millions of pieces, in addition to which many glaciers were melted and converted the planet in an enormous Atlantis – Yoram said, he was the son of a space pilot

- Yes, that was what occurred – Shinji said without any feeling

- But I have another version of the things – Aya said – I was a little girl when the third impact occurred, but the spaceship in which my grandfather and I were traveling was close to the Earth, all were slept, but I was watching through the window and I remember to have seen a lot of giants robots surrounding the planet, I think that they were the invaders that flooded the Earth

- That’s stupid, you must have dreamed that – said Kenji, the smallest of the kids

- Aya, return to your seat – Shinji told her as he tried to look untroubled, it was supposed that all about the EVAs was a secret between Asuka and him – You couldn’t have been more than 5 years old at that time, you could have been confused your memories, the official version is what Yoram said, and until we have another theory, it will continue being the official version

- Good, nobody has ever believed to me, but some day I will prove that the theory of meteorites is wrong

- Teacher, how was the world before the third impact? – Minako asked

- Well Mina, In fact the world changed too much. In the first place the geography was so different. As we saw the last lesson, the world was divided as well in continents and in countries that contained states, cities, towns, and villages… When the first men returned to the Earth, they found that the ocean was bigger and the land was just a few, so they decided that it could be divided in three sectors as we have now: “Occidental Sector A” for the land that once upon a time was America. “Occidental Sector E”, respective for Europe and Africa. And the Oriental Sector, where we are now, from Asia. As far as economy and government, Capitalism is now a little different. A mixture of communism and democracy was created. Before the last impact, the world had Presidents, Dictators, Kings… Now, as you know, the power is in the hands of the olders, every man or woman older than 60 years can take the most important decisions. The feeding is one of the things that’s almost the same on account of some animals and vegetables species that survived. The cities were immense and to go from a place to another one we rode cars, trains or bikes. The sectors are so reduced now that in some steps you can arrive at where you wish. As you see the world has changed a lot.

- My mother always tells me about of how the world was before the third impact

- Yes, the must of us still have many memories. If you don’t have more questions you can take a rest.

The children take the recess, Shinji thought in the true of Aya’s version, but only Asuka and he were conscious of the only one real version. When he opened his writing desk he found a letter cover with his name. He preferred to ignore it for a while and continued giving the class. The education also had changed: The basic education was divided in 5 groups; group 1 was for the little ones, as a kinder garden. Group 2 contained the subjects from the first half of elementary school as Group 3 contained the second half. Group 4 was a kind of high Junior school with greater activities and in Group 5 the principal activity was to make professional projects of investigation to improve the new world. Each group was raising the number of years it took, and when a person finished the five groups, he can get to the University where they saw the same subjects but more deep, becoming in addition teachers of any basic education group.

Since Asuka was in charge of group 4, she used to arrive later than Shinji to the apartment where they lived. That day, when she arrived she found a thoughtful Shinji.

- I’m here. What happened?, you have a bad look

- Hi Asuka, Is just that I’ve received another letter

- Still it is anonymous?, What does he says this time?

- The same of the three previous ones .We don’t know anything about he or she, but tell me Asuka, tell me how can he know that Ikari is my real last name?. Everyone knows me like Shinji Katsuragi Langley. We lived 6 years so comfortable, without remember Gendou, but the last month, somebody send me a letter, and then other and another one. Why he didn’t tell us what he wants?

- Calm down!, perhaps the next time he tells you what he wants?

- Next time… I’m afraid it could be something difficult, maybe he’s against life, and I no longer want to know of deaths

- Give him time, maybe he isn’t as dangerous as we thought

- I hope so

))))))))))))))--------(((((((((((((

Some days passed by. The new student definitely was shy and that made Asuka to get mad at him. On the other hand Shinji seemed to identify a little with him, they looked alike in the behavior.

Next Friday Shinji was very happy because he was traveling with Asuka to Occidental Sector E to play a concert of Cello. When they arrived in what a time was Switzerland, they were received by the olders with a party and taken to an apartment.

They lay in their room for a while. In the evening they left to give a stroll. The landscape was more beautiful than the one of the Oriental Sector.

- Shinji, do you remember how the world was some years before? – Asuka asked to her husband

- Yes, this place remembered me a lot

- I think this place is wonderful; I’d like to live here when we finished the university

- That’s a good idea. Look! that place seems to be a store of antiques

They approached to go to the store where a man used to sell all kind of things, from toys and electronics to clothes and books. Something called Asuka’s attention - Shinji, look at this! It looks like an EVA

- Wow! What is the price of this piece of metal?

- You! I know you… - said the seller – oh yeah!, I remember, in the daily news, You’re the Cello artist, isn’t it?. Well, this attempt of robot is 90 umes*2, but in your case it could be about… 30 umes

- It’s a good prize Shinji – Asuka told him

- I don’t know, maybe is not useful. To pay 30 umes for something like that and then transport it later until Oriental Sector would be much

- Mr. Langley, an artist like you will surely find any utility on it. I give it to you in 25 umes

- I´m not sure, what about 20 umes?

- Ok, this is my last supply, 22 umes. Come’ on!. You’ll never find something like this and from that size

- Okay, I’ll take it

- It’s a good purchase Master Langley, can I show you another thing?

- Do you have another thing like this?

- No, I only found this in Jupiter, at the beginning I thought it was like a robot but I couldn’t repaired it, I don’t have idea of how to do with that.

- In that case we’ll go back to the building

They get at the apartment with the heavy metal piece and they put it on the floor

- What could it be? It seems to be a little EVA, but what would have to do on Jupiter?

- There’s only a way to find out, it is necessary to arrive at its interior, so Shinji, open it!

- But it could be dangerous and it has a red color, like your EVA

- You’re a coward. This isn’t dangerous, I can touch it in any way and nothing happens – said Asuka as she touched all the armor

- Asuka…

- Now What?

- It seems that you pushed a button. A red light ignited

- I don’t see anything

- It was when you pushed something under the arm

- Where?, Here?

- Yes, press it for a while. Let us see, if we tightened the same one across …

The armor opened as it was a cocoon in the chest

- Is a very small opening, I thought it could be the internal circuit of an EVA, but now I don’t have idea of what’s this

- Wait, here is another button, and also in the other side

They pressed the other two buttons at the same time and the armor totally opened

- Just a lot of cables! – Asuka exclaimed disappointed

- Wait, there is something more

Shinji took out the cables, one by one, until an object with artificial skin appeared

- A human robot! I haven’t seen one since I was a child

- It looks like a boy. What are you doing? Why are you covering it with the cables again?

- We must bring it home in the way it was and there we could watch it better, it is just a precaution in case it is a robot programmed to explode at the contact with oxygen

- Well it didn’t make any reaction now, but you’re right, we will observe it better at home

- I know you’ll understand

- On the following day at night, Shinji made his performance near a pianist and a singer. A cultural event of that kind was a special celebration since the space ships had returned to the Earth and any artist was extremely acclaimed. The next morning Asuka and Shinji got back to Oriental Sector

When they were at their home, Asuka requested Shinji to open the robot again. This time the process to open it was faster and they watched better the android

- What do we do now?

- It must have a mechanism, it looks like a human, but I’m sure it’s a robot

- This part in the chest seems to be a door. Asuka I’ve found the electronic brain!

- can you fix it?

- Sure, it has an easier technology than the one of the EVAs. I remember when Misato tried to explain me the EVA mechanism, but I never understand her at all. Hey, do you have at the hand an energy tub?

- Of what size?

- Maybe one of the batteries that we use for the timms

- Ok, here you have

Shinji placed the new battery in substitution of an exhausted cartridge of energy. The robot started moving, he didn’t need to be repaired.

Get calm, you’re fine, what or who are you? – Asuka asked to him

- Perhaps he can’t understand our language

- I understand it – answered the robot with his cute voice – Hi, my name is Astro – said as he gave them his hand as a peace signal, Shinji also gave him - It’s a delight to meet you, I’m Shinji

- And my name is Asuka. I hope you’re not planning something dangerous or you’ll be in problems – said Asuka threaten him with her fistful

- I’ll never do anything dangerous against humans

- Okay, I believe you, and what are you?, I haven’t seen a robot like you since I was a teenager

- I’m supposed to be a robot from the Science Ministry of Japan… in the Earth … Why do you look me in that way?, don’t you know about the Planet Earth?

- In what planet you think you are? – Asuka asked in her bad behavior

- Or at least in the part that has survived

- Shinji, I’ve never heard about a Science Ministry – Asuka commented to Shinji in low voice

- Neither do I , let’s see in the timm… Sure, how we were going to know of it?, Nerv was in charge to disappear it little by little. The UN didn’t object in anything.

- What!, the Ministry of Science is no longer here?, and what about Professor Elefun, and my family, and my friends

- Family?... Shinji, this thing was inside of something similar to an EVA, but maybe he could escape from the robots abolition

- You’re right. Tell us Astro, what were you doing inside of that thing?

- It was strange. The sun became extremely overactive. In that way the Earth had finished drying itself. A group of scientists created a gadget to suppress solar-nuclear reactions and in order to save Earth I was ordered to take it until the sun. The nearer I was to the sun, the hotter I felt. My body was starting to melt, but then I saw Atlas, my enemy. We always had opposite ideas as far as the force and the power, he insisted in turned me in a great and powerful robot like him, in the fight he somehow sent in the device towards the sun and my mission was finished although we continue fighting, but a strange giant robot arrived suddenly and introduced me in his chest, he was helping me but in another moment something attacked him, I felt that he flew and that we traveled. We must have gone to another planet, perhaps to Jupiter or Saturn but something more returned to attack the thing that protected me. I don’t know what more happened because I was out of energy.

- When all this happened?

- It was may 23 of 2014

- 2014! – Asuka and Shinji exclaimed surprised

- Wow!, definitely is a survivor

- So he doesn’t know anything of what happened in these years. Astro, Welcome to the year 2023!

- 2023! – exclaimed this time the little robot

- Let’s see… For Start, you were saved for some months from be melted with any robot that talked

- What!

- Yes, it’s a pain, but any robot that had more than 3 functions similar to a human was melted, We didn’t see again a robot walking as people in the streets or chatting, they were reduce to their primitive forms, to useful machines for the man, just as tools

- Even the EVAs weren’t totally human for that reason

- What are the EVAs?

- They were giant robots, there’re supposed to defend the Earth from the menace of the angels and a third impact, the EVAS reached their objective, but it wasn’t good

- After the EVAs defeated the angels, it happened something known now as the third impact, at the beginning of the year 2016

- A meteorite fall again? – the young robot asked remembering his history lessons with his friend Mustache, when he told to his students about the first and second impact

- Yes, but this time it finished with all life: humans, animals and also vegetables. Just some of us that were traveling through space could survive. We tried to rebuild the most of the earthian life. All the space villas were cancelled for live again in Earth.

- All the life in Earth was destroyed? – the boy asked while their eyes began to become damp

- Yes – Shinji answered as he searched in his timm again for more information – We are now 152 human beings in all the planet, plus all the vegetation and animals that have been able to regenerate… and a child robot

- He is crying! – Asuka exclaimed surprised, she never had seen cry a robot

- Yeah, he looks very unhappy. What happens Astro?

- All you said means that probably no one of my friends is with life, and that my family was melted. It will happen to me the same?

- I didn’t believe it, but we must tell to the olders about you

- No Shinji!, some of those old ones could be who voted against the robots. Look at him, seems a real boy, and also has feelings. I have an idea, we can tell that he is a relative of our

- But he is not registered, where he was supposed to be?

-Maybe we could say that he is a nephew that was in Occidental Sector and we meet him in the trip. Do you like the idea Astro?

- Yes, it pleases much to me

- But Asuka, he is like a boy, and what about our promise?. I don’t want to be like a father, I don’t know how a good one must be. Do you want me to remember the only example that I had?

- Do you think that I have idea of how to be a good mother?. You know that it’s my last wish to be one, but this is something unknown for your anonymous fan, and in addition we will be uncles, not parents idiot.

- I would prefer to think it

- If you have a better idea just say it to me, meanwhile you could take Astro with you to the school

- Why with me?, it was your idea, Why you don’t take him with you?

- Because in my group there are no boys who looks of their age genius. Come on!, it’s just for a time. I’m worried for your security, and I didn’t want to told you, but when we arrived there was another letter under the door

- Another letter. Give it to me, Does he gives some clues?

Asuka gave the letter to Shinji that quickly began to read it - Asuka, that man has watched us, he knew that we were going the weekend to the Occidental Sector and that today we were returning

- Well Shinji, anyone can read that information in the daily news of timms. Then what you say. Could your nephew fight for you in case that letters come further on?

- Ok, Astro, welcome to the Langley family

- Yes!

On the following day Shinji took Astro to the school like a student more, he was accepted with affability by the other students. The population was so small that soon the news of the nephew had run by all the Oriental Sector.

“””””””””””””””””””””

June 6th soon arrived and Shinji wanted to celebrate his birthday. He invited his friends from the university to a party in its department. Kaworu as it was supposed, rejected the invitation, but for the insistence of Kozue did not have more remedy than accept.

The awaited day arrived. When Asuka, Astro and Shinji had finished putting the table and waited for to the guests, a letter was introduced below the door. This time Shinji realized of the moment it occurred and he ran the fastest he could to the entrance. Astro also helped him but neither could see anybody.

Without anything more to do than read the new letter Shinji did it. His pursuer had the impudence to congratulate it, but that was not all, in that occasion he wanted to meet him the following day at the outskirts of the Sector. Shinji did not say anything, simply he kept it again in a bookseller.

Hours later arrived the guests. It was a pleasant and amused afternoon, nevertheless Shinji couldn’t sleep that night. In his dreams he was again in the past. He had to ride on EVA Unit One, he refused, but finally he was convinced and later he saw in his nightmare a series of faces, bleeds, destruction. Everything finished suddenly when he was gotten up anxiously.

- What happened? Asuka asked to him that awoke when she felt so much movement

- It was just a nightmare

- Try to rest a little, you will see that everything will be fine tomorrow

- That I hope

Shinji couldn’t sleep in all night. In the morning he was thoughtfully until the scheduled time in the letter for the encounter arrived. The sky was dark and the black clouds foretold a storm. Astro by indication of Shinji stayed at a distance. A half hour later Shinji listened to a heavy voice that made him shake until the bones.

- Shinji Ikari

What, Who are you?

- I am the voice of your past, your present and your future

- You coward!, Come to a place where I can see you

The only thing that he could see was a high black figure between some trees, seemed to be a man of severe and thin face. Long purpled haired. Their eyes shined suddenly in a golden tone - What. What is what you want?

- you will know it soon, son of Gendou Ikari - the man of black clothes said while he raised a pistol

That man was very fast and as soon as he aimed at Shinji, a dart left sudden flight, nevertheless Astro, who stayed watching, was faster and managed to turn aside the direction of the pistol flying towards the man and knocking down the pistol to him. The man disappeared. Astro approached Shinji that was thrown in the ground and shaking of fear.

- Shinji, are you fine?

- HE TRIED TO KILL ME! - the young answered with a terrible frightening face

Astro backed down steps as looking for something and gathered an object of the ground

- It is a dart. That man wanted to inject you something The hard rain began to fall while Shinji rose slowly of the ground even feeling as their knees shook. In silence both returned to the department where Asuka waited for them with impatience.

After taking a shower, Shinji seated on the chair near the table and took the hot tea cup in his hands

- Asuka, this man is dangerous. He tried to shoot to me!

- What!. Shinji, I told you to be carefull

- I was, but he is fast

- It must be a drug, but I cannot determine what substance exactly is - said Astro while he observed the dart and he proved with the finger a little of it – It is not a mortal poison nor something to sleep

- Asuka, Why he wants me, What is what my father did so that man hates me, I mean, What as much he knows that my father did and why I have to pay the consequences?

- Could you saw him? How he was? - Asuka asked him

- Somebody stranger. His skin is white, he’s tall with long purple hair, and his eyes… It seemed that he hadn’t until they shined as if they were of gold

- And he dressed a black suit of a single piece and also black boots – The robot added

- I… astro… wouldn’t be there… Hey, you can fly - Shinji exclaimed when remembering that moment, Why you hadn’t told us?

- You hadn’t asked, also have certain hidden arms

Shinji continued narrating his adventure and they determined that if there was a next time, Astro would have to act faster, but they spent several days without there was newness some.

Meanwhile in the university, they advanced with new projects. The director ordered a work of sociology by pairs, Asuka and Kozue were the first team and Shinji and Kaworu the second.

Shinji went to Kaworu’s apartment, they did not take much in finishing the homework because it was something very simple

- Ready, We have all the information kept in timm

- We finished before which thought - Kaworu commented

- Kaworu, can I tell you something

- Yes, sure

- Years ago I had a friend called like you.

- Really?. It is a peculiar name, my parents used to call me in another way, but I can’t remember, my Uncle began to call me thus when I went away to live with him. He said that it was the perfect name for an angel

- Your uncle is much right. You live with him?

- No, he passed away shortly after the third impact, he was already very old, I supposed that he depressed himself when he saw in which form was reduced the planet. Since then I am alone. My parents died when I was younger. And what about your parents?

- My mother died when I was very little and my father… the last time that I saw him was shortly before the third impact. But I have Asuka

- Shinji, Have you sometime ask yourself why in all the world we were the only ones that survived

- I have thought many times about it, many of the men who survived have a good reason, they are fair, wise men, have made resurge the planet. Asuka and I have something to do, nevertheless we do not know where to begin. Perhaps writing a book we pruned to give the message that we want. - Shinji noticed that Kaworu was a little sad

- I don’t have idea of why I’m alive, I do not dare to anything and I haven’t made anything useful. My Uncle wanted me to survive, but I don’t know why.

- Perhaps in a little time you will find out, Well, I believe that it’s hour to return home

- See you soon!

When Shinji left, a strong headache seized of Kaworu leaving him unconscious.

-------- o --- O --- o ---------

A month passed away. One day, when Shinji and Astro returned from the school, they couldn´t find Asuka. They thought that she would have been entertained speaking with some of its students, but within the hours went out, they began to be hopeless.

It was already 11 at night when a letter was send under the door of the apartment. The both of them ran to gather it. When Shinji read it, he understood the delay of Asuka, she had been kidnapped by the man who tried to poison him. If he wanted to rescue her, he had to go to the attached direction with Astro.

Without losing time, both went to the suburbs of the city. They entered in a warehouse that was still conserved. Everything was dark, but Astro with his illuminated eyes they stay. It seemed that there was nobody until a light directed to the center suddenly dazzled them. When Shinji separated from the light ray, he received a right blow in its weak point and he didn’t know what more happened.

When Shinji woke up on the following day, he had a slight headache. He watch the place where he was, it was a small room without windows and was illuminated with an artificially light. There a pistol shot a laser beams species towards Astro. This ray didn’t damage him except for immobilizing him from feet to head.

- Finally you are asleep - a voice throughout the room was heard

- Who are you?. What have you done to Asuka?

- Get Calm Young Ikari. Your wife is fine, I am only doing her a few analyses

- Damn you!

- Can’t you say another thing?. You have said the same for years

- Why are you doing this? What do you want from me? – Shinji asked as watching towards one and another wall, but this time he didn’t obtain any answer. Could he be a survivor of Nerv? Suddenly the ray that imprisoned the robot stopped and Astro fell to the floor. He didn’t take much in recovering but when he touched the walls, he realized that he wouldn’t destroy him so easily.

- It would be better that you stop Tobio Tenma

The robot stopped as he heard the name with which he was called the first months of his life and put attention to the voice

- Well, that’s better. It’s a luck that both of you are here. It makes me things easier. Stop!, Hold them alone!. Silence! - For a moment a different voice had been listened there, apparently the kidnapper was not completely alone.

- Astro, it seems that somebody else is with him, and that voice seems to me well-known

- And also to me, it seems like the one of…

- Silence!, I am the only one that speaks here. If you want to leave with life and to see Asuka again, you must do what I order you.

- How we will know that she is fine? Shinji asked watching the ceiling

- I fear that you only can trust in what I say. Very well. Let us begin. It will be something easy, place the helmet that is in the table on your head

Shinji put the helmet of virtual reality on. He immediately began to be in one of his nightmares. Astro didn´t understand what was happening, he only saw Shinji to behave of a different way from since he had seen that he was. Shinji was transformed first into the timid and dissuaded adolescent that had been shortly before the third impact, but in agreement, the illusion continued, he became a man of cold feelings as his father. He was left for hours In that illusion that made him be heartless.

Meanwhile Astro had tried to amplify his hearing to find a weak point in the walls, ceiling or floor, nevertheless the enemy knew him perfectly well and the ray was activated again paralyzing him until Shinji faint after hours to be induced by the helmet.

He woke up again in some minutes, Astro was free again and he ran to help him but Shinji didn´t seem to be the same one. He dealt him with indifference by minutes until he reacted and make him conscious that he was really not like another person. Meanwhile Astro had worsened his senses and found certain weakness in one of the corners. It could be a stair that descended to a cellar. If he had an opportunity he could try to make a tunnel with his force.

This single opportunity took hours for appearing. This time they heard a kind of laughter transformed into weeping. Astro did not hope nor a second to impel itself with a slight flight and to throw the floor. He had not been mistaken, he found a space that descended to an inferior level. They continued hearing the weeping more resoundingly. Astro took Shinji and lowered flying by the opening.

There was very dark and Astro had to catch his eyes to illuminate the stay. It seemed to be an old scientific laboratory. Seeing that Shinji was very scared, he left him in one of the corners that seemed safer and he went towards a door that was on the other side, at the end of a long threshold. It didn’t have any key or locks so he could open it without obstacles to meet a young person who cried bitterly.

When the young saw him, he transformed himself again into the mysterious man. Their short hair grew in rebellious form leaving between seeing a set of dwelled gray hairs and dyeing the rest of him an almost reddish tone, his honey eyes acquired a gilded brightness. His round face was extended wrinkling a little and his glance acquired a strong determination.

- How have you managed to escape? the man asked while he was held with force by the robot that managed to be faster than the crazy scientist

- That doesn’t matter, but you have a lot to explain

At that moment Shinji had recovered his force and went to where the voices were heard and helped Astro to moor him to a chair with a rope that was near them. When the scientist saw himself without success, he transformed himself again into his original form.

- Help me! - the young person shouted, Shinji was really surprised

Kaworu! You! - Astro, he doesn’t look like the man who had attacked us

- Didn’t you see how he transformed himself?. Ok Hirata or whoever that you are, begin to explain what’s happening and where is Asuka

- I don’t know. I feel as I’m not me, I have horrible headaches and later I don’t have idea of what happens, somebody controls me, I don’t have idea of how I arrived here, I only know that I am afraid

- Astro, I believe that he says the truth, Why we didn’t lose him?

- No. If we lose him his other personality will escape. Better we hope to him until appears again

They spent hours without Kaworu changed his form again. Astro stayed watching him and meanwhile Shinji crossed the building. He had found Asuka sleepy and not wanting to wake her up he waited until she was asleep, once Asuka woke up, Shinji explained the few things that he understood.

When they returned to where the prisoner was, they slept in turns. The first one in sleeping was Astro, later Asuka, and at last time Shinji. The following morning everything followed equal. The rays of the sun entered by a dome that was in a border of the room, Asuka began to look around the place by hand, finding a small book with written notes, something very unusual to see at that time.

- Shinji. Here are notes of your parents. Shinji was gotten up and as Asuka began to read the book from the beginning. They could not understand everything of what there was written, but knew that it must have relation with all the things that happened..

After failed tests with the U.R. project: Unsensitive Romanesque, I have decided to begin with the U.S. project, Unsensitive Salomonic. I’ll forget for a time from any project, I must focus on find a cure to my virus before I be paralyzed.

October 2022

Finally I have recover my forces. In a few months project 22 will be watched again.

- Damn, this man knew what was going to happen and he escape from the third impact in a ship. – said Shinji with great annoyance - How could he managed to do all that?, I thought that my father was responsible for everything, but now I discover that he was victim of a damn experiment

- Shinji - Asuka exclaimed impressed to see Shinji so angry, later everything remained in silence for a moment until they listened to moan

- Why are you crying Kaworu, You knew all of this, Isn’t it? - Shinji shouted to him

- I… I didn’t know anything – When he said this, another headache seized of him and he lowered the head when he passed out itself, then he transformed himself again into the mad scientist

- Jajajaja, Kaworu don’t lie, he didn’t know anything, jajaja

- You are the one that wrote all that? Asuka asked threatening him with the finger, later adopted an attitude of watchman, she crossed his arms while she paid attention

- Of course, and I believe that you need the notes of the last months. It has been a satisfaction to have studied you - the crazy scientist even tied answered

- But what was the objective for make unsensitive persons?, it only cause pain – Said Astro a little angry

- Oh boy!, you could be a magnificent experiment if they hadn´t left to you. But it is well, you caught me, so I will answer for your questions. What was the objective?. It had a scientific aim in the beginning, but later it became very funny, jajajaja

- you Are a sadist. What scientific aim can have that? - Shinji asked while he went around the chair in which he was tied

- jajajajajaja, Everything began with a friend of mine. When we were studying at the University, we wanted to find a method to control the human feelings thus to avoid having pain, we began a few experiments, but he fell in love with a lawyer. I was alone with the project and I did not think to leave it, I modified some things of the first investigations and began project U.R. but it even needed some adjustments and I decided to cancel it to begin project U.S. Since you have already read a 90% of the substance was catastrophic in any human, but with certain doses they could develop interesting characteristics. I managed to create geniuses.

- Geniuses, they were almost demons - commented a little calmed Shinji - and to what price the geniuses were wanted. Of million and million of people we are just now hundreds.

- And that’s better Shinji Ikari, you can rebuild the world. Asuka and you could have begun, you were alone several weeks in all the planet, What did you do all that time... I fear that I am too old to continue living. When empowering to me of the body of single Kaworu I was able to prolong my life, but now that the experiment has been discovered I am not right to live, Kill me!

- No! - Astro said

– That’s an easy solution? - Asuka said

- Then what is what you want?, You already know what was the experiment about

- yes, in the beginning you wanted to avoid the pain so, Why you ended causing it? - the robot asked

- You can call it envy. I never knew a woman that loved me, Why I would have to avoid the pain that people caused me. In addition to, it was not bad at all, otherwise you wouldn’t been here. You are the best robot that was created in all the galaxy.

- But all you did is unfair, and why had you followed with this experiment now? - Shinji asked

- to see what happened. It was very interesting to watch you throughout all your life. If your father had not had nor a 1% of the substance, you would be a completely happy boy, because although your mother also had a certain percentage, there was a part of the experiment that I could not control, and that was the maternal instinct of the women. They almost made disappear the substance of its bodies.

- And Kaworu, Why you rose him and then seized of his body? - Astro asked

- He was really my nephew. My brother didn’t escape to my experiments, so when he died I had myself to make position of him, a very gentle boy. When I was ill he said to me that he was arranged to make any thing to help me, so I took him the word. I found a way to mix my brain with the one of him and my body was left emptiness and buried. But we cannot be conscious at the same time. It took me some years to control his conscience, It was until I obtained it that I began to fight you psychologically Shinji. And now I would like to know what are you doing with me

- Well, I believe that we would have to discuss it in private - Shinji said. When he left, he was followed by Asuka and Astro.

}}}}}}} --- 0 --- {{{{{{

- We must kill him – said Asuka fearly

- But I am not arranged to kill, even to that heartless one

- But we cannot make him free, he could do something worse

- If only the prisoners still existed... Astro, Which is exactly your history, it seems that we are related by that stupid project

- I was created by Doctor Tenma. he had a son called Tobio, but he never had time for him, Instead of giving him a little of his time, he bought him gifts. One day Tobi decided to prove a new car that he had given to him but he had a car accident. When Doctor Tenma knew what had happened, he became crazy, he was locked in the Institute per months working in me. He used to said me that I was a work of art of the technology cybernetics, I am an atomic robot, with propulsion rockets, one hundred thousand horse power, capacity to speak 60 different languages, machine gun, laser beams, and capacity of fast recovery, but I also have a heart that allows me to know when somebody acts for good or for bad. Mother loved me and she taught me how to act like a human, but one day, my father realized that I wasn’t really Tobi, and that I was not a real boy, so he decided that he didn’t want to have me as his son and he sold me to a circus. Mother sometimes visited me in the functions until she became ill and she died. Some months later the laws for robots were proclaimed and I could return home. But nothing was the same and I never saw my father again.

- At least he was a father for you by some months. Mine always was very cold, never had a word for me. I grew with my uncle who either was a friend. I didn’t know what was love, It wasn’t enough to remember to my mother and little by little I was forgetting her. One day my father called me I wish he had changed but later I understood that he needed me for his egoistic plans, the instrumentality, the third impact

- But at the same time he was manipulated by this crazy scientific. He only has caused pain to you with his experiment, what punishment are we going to give him?

- Perhaps Kaworu would have to decide? - proposed Shinji - after all any thing which we want to do with his uncle we will have to do it with him

- It can be dangerous, Kaworu doesn’t have bad intentions, but he hasn’t the control of his other personality

After hours of discussing how would the mad scientist pay for his faults, they had a decision, they would give him with the olders, nevertheless when they entered the room in which they had left him well moored, they saw an inert body.

He had a knife that carried in an hidden pocket, he got untied and wrote a few lines in a cheat of paper and then injected him 100% of U.S. substance. The face that he had at the time of dying was the one of Kaworu.

Asuka took the written paper and the three read the message that always would be in their memory:

This project never must be imagined. It only has brought the destruction of the humanity and the terrestrial life. If one goes away against the love obtains hate, resentment. Be trashed of all this so that the man never returns to cause something similar. You are in charge of a new world so you can make it better. .

Sincerely

Masashi Hirata

Do you ever remember something you were going to do and say to yourself, "man, how could I forget that?!" I say this because a long time ago I planned to buy the Samurai Jack DVD, but somehow I COMPLETELY forgot about it until today. Oddly enough I remembered Jack after watching Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai."

Luckily DVDplanet.com has Jack season 1 for $22. :)

Buy it man! And tell me when you do.

Ordered it today! Should be here in a week or two.

I just realized that on Tuesday it will have been a full month since I ordered this and I still don't have it. :(

Is that a good place to order from Ray? Myself, I have no idea. I suppose if they got a little bit behind orders it's concievable it couldn't be here yet.

Did the Benoit (did you get it from McAdam?) tape come in yet? If you ordered both in on the same day than to two different places (although I think 4 weeks isn't too long for McAdam) and they both haven't come in than maybe the envelopes got lost in the mail. THat is of course assuming you didn't pay by credit card.

The last order for stuff I sent away in the mail was for 2 or 3 different things and I forgot to put stamps on each one of them. Even bought the stamps mere minutes before I sent my orders away. Luckily, I got them back in a few days.

Remember, if you pay by money order and that money order isn't cashed than you can get your money back.

While we're on the subject, what's the longest someone's waited for a tape order here?

Not to brag or anything but I've often had to "wait" 8, 10, 12 or even one time over 52 weeks. Lesson of the day folks? Stay away from RF Video. Currently, I've been waiting for a guy to come through and it's been well over a year now.

Just watched episode XI of Samurai Jack. THis was one of the random eps I missed.

Jack and The Scotsman -- Man alive, this was an awesome epidose. The first 5 or 7 minutes or however long it was with Jack and the Scotsman on the bridge has got to be up there for best 5 to 7 minutes of film/TV/animation ever produced. I can't begin to describe how awesome that was. Loved every second it from how long the rickety, skinny bridge (and I LOVE rickety, skinny bridges) was, to meeting the Scotsman on the bridge, to the contrasting charactors of the two, to the arguing about who would go back and who would go forward, to the fighting that lasted over a day, the fighting itself and of course the artwork of it all. This is Samurai Jack at its finiest. The coolness, the hilarity about how they do all the over the top coolness and the imagination and of course the tribute to Yojimbo which I still unfortunately have to see.

Oh, and did I mention how freaking sweet the technique Jack used to keep himself on the bridge after falling asleep on it? Bleeping, bleeping bleep. This show's on a pedestal all its own. Except for of course Astroboy.

Watching this show, I'm realising how much I enjoy this are a lot of the same reasons I like Dragonball, the first series. The imagination, some of the humour (some of Jack's humour, sometime's it feels forced though like it almost had to be in there to sell the show to whoever they're trying to sell to) are what I like about both shows. The long bridge reminds me of something that Toriyama would think of. Kind of like that long tower you had to climb up so you could get to the top to try to acquire the precious water. The humour where Jack saves himself on the bridge for example is over the top yet serious which is what you'll find in Dragonball at times. They bothdo a good job of combing humour with over the top coolnes. Love this show. Love it, love it, love it, love it, love it.

Got "screwed" with the Highspots Tiger Mask eps.

Looks like they got them off Lynch judging from a few different things. THey weren't the first episodes of the series. Aggravating, money draining and disapointing.

SUPERB fights in this series. Physcology laden.

they're usually very reliable. The last time I ordered it took about three weeks.

Yeah, I ordered from McAdam. Every time I've ordered from him it took almost exactly four weeks so I won't worry to much yet.

While we're on the subject, what's the longest someone's waited for a tape order here?

If I remember correctly it was the first time I ever bought a wrestling tape. I ordered four WCW PPV's from ebay. It took about three months to get them.

I think I might be as excited as you are about that Benoit "THe Early Years" tape coming in! Looking forward to discussing it.

WP -- Wish Samurai Jack would do some kind of wrestling tribute with Benoit, Jack, Dynamite, Kobashi, Toyota, Lyger, Tiger Mask and other formidable foes of any kind. Have it in various outdoor settings too.

Wait, I think this is the one with the Yojimbo tribute! Doesn't it start with him walking with shots of his feet and the ground? And music that sounds like the Yojimbo opening. It's been a long time since I saw it.

"I fear no man." - Jack

"Ooohhh. Now that's some tough talk from some guy who wears a basket on his head." - Scotsman

Yeah, it's the ep with the trashtalking. I remember takinig note about how the music was pretty cool at the beginning.

One other great moment you reminded me of was of course the trashtalking. The Scotsman goes on like Jericho would do with Stephanie where he would use derogatory adjective after derogatory adjective to describe Steph but here The Scotsman even goes further shouting out a million adjectives in a roll to get Jack's temper up complete with each adjective getting its own splitscreen and a different shot of the Scotman's face. Well, that was a long runon setence.

Here is some good informaton on why it's important to watch the Japanese version instead of the english. Taken from the forums on www.astroboy-online.com

SPOILERS

I will add some specifics:

1. Why were were so many scenes deleted that the story lacked continuity?

a. with the original language version, Tobio's last request is that his papa makes the robot just like him, and that he should love the robot just as he loved his son.

b. Regarding Atlas, he was made from stolen plans for Atom. Hence, the psychic link between Atom and Atlas that causes their eyes to flash, and sometimes causes Atom to fall into a trancelike state. He goes 'sleepwalking' on one occasion, and passes out on another. Furthermore, with Atlas' human masters, Skunk and Giss, they were completely harsh toward him, insulting him and denying him any semblance of love. The only kindness he ever knew was from Livian. Her telling him to protect the weak ones was the only righteous advice he ever received while in his child form.

c. It showed Atlas pushing the icebergs into the ship's path.

Regarding (a), the English version skipped everything that occurred between Tobio's accident and the first scenes of Atom's creation. Thus, the viewer might be wondering what happened to the kid. Even if the editors thought that the death of a child was too intense for such a show, they could not help the questions kids would ask their parents about the child's sudden absence.

Regarding (, the English version did a rather poor job here, because it gave no explanation for Atom's flashing eyes and sleepwalking. Atlas defeated Atom in the North sea, and would have destroyed him or left him on the bottom. The viewer is missing a reason for his sudden change of heart that causes him to take Atom from the ocean floor, and put him on the ship. He remembered Livian's kindness, and her words were therefore important to him. But the English viewers would not see Livian until later in the series. Furthermore, it likewise lacked any reason for Atlas' adult form making war against humanity. His dealings with humans were limited to those whom he robbed and his cruel masters. He knew nothing else about humans. They were either his tormentors or his victims.

Regarding ©, the English version depicts the ship's captain as incompetent. Any competent captain would surely have steered the ship far from the icebergs. But, the viewer does not know that Atlas had caused the icebergs to float into the ships path.

I could probably find a few other things, but will stop here.

RIGHT FROM THE HORSE"S MOUTH!!!!!!! -- About the edits in 1980's Astroboy!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was speaking more of continuity of voices for recurring characters.

We produced the pilot in 1980 as a one-hour episode; I don't know why it was edited down to a single half hour. That happened in Japan. We met the Japanese execs just once. They were very pleasant, but it's not as if they worked closely with us, or vice versa. I think we all would have wanted to. We had no idea of the series' arcs, and had to discover their progress show by show, just as viewers later did. A little guidance or knowledge of future episodes would have been helpful, but we got the scripts almost as soon as they were translated.

We originally did cover all of Atlas' genesis; I remember that fairly well, and I'm sure it's confusing to viewers who are unaware. (Trust me, I was ticked; there were a lot of Skunk scenes right away.)

Similarly, we sometimes didn't receive all the scenes; some were held back from us by Nippon TV because they were feared to be too violent -- for American television, at least. We dubbed what we were given and warily assumed that somehow a "fix" would be made on the other end. And once in awhile a scene came through that the American producer or director thought were too much. For specific episodes, I'll have to get the scripts out of storage and check; I think our production team did that only twice.

One scene that was cut, which I really wish hadn't been, was a live-action tag at the end of one show with Osamu Tezuka. I have no idea what he was saying, but it was deemed that Tezuka would be unknown to audiences, and that the scene was too far outside the show's format.

The cast's editorial control extended only to sometimes rewording lines for length or meaning. And I and another cast member wrote fresh lyrics for the opening and closing themes. (We recorded the direct translations as well, and Nippon TV chose ours instead. It's the full cast you hear singing.)

More information from the voice of Skunk (US dub I'm assming)

I'll pull all my stuff out of storage and await all your expert questions. One funny story that immediately comes to mind was how we had to change the scripts. The translations from Japanese were rather literal -- hippo became "water horse," for example. We ran into that sort of thing often, and had to change them as we were recording the lines.

One thing I really regret is that our director and producer didn't seem to understand the idea of continuity. I was instructed to try several different approaches to Skunk in several different early episodes. I finally was allowed to do it the way I wanted to.

We did the pilot in the fall of 1980, actually, and did all the rest over the course of the summer of 1981. Conditions were horrible by the end -- we'd arrive at 10 a.m. and depart sometimes at midnight. Coughs, sore throats and colds were common in the last week.

Besides working on "Astro," I later was an assistant storyboard artist on the animated "Doug" series. I was also a longtime staffer on The Onion, a satirical weekly and website that you might be familiar with. I still do voice work on its radio show; in fact, I continue to do a fair amount of radio drama when I can. That's why I was tapped for "Astro" in the first place.
