Updates and a couple other things.

Recommended Posts

I have updated the Things You Need On Your PC thread with over 14 new items and have updated some out of date links.

1. If you are having problems with your PC. Hit that thread first. If you post a thread without at least looking at the thread and seeing if a solution is there or not then you will probably just get pointed to that thread. Not to mention you may even solve your problem before getting a response. Dames has posted that message on this forum's header as well.

2. If you have not been to that thread... CHECK IT OUT. Download Spybot and see what's running on your computer. Take advantage of the free firewalls and anti-virus programs to try and eliminate problems FROM appearing. I never have issues with spyware/viruses etc on my computer because I take measures before hand to not have something happen. I run Spybot/Adware once a week as well as a full anti-virus scan every 1-2 weeks. I also use a firewall so exploits like Blaster won't affect me. Not to say that you are 100% secure from everything... but it helps.

3. I posted a very good link to the free eTrust EZ Armor Suite that includes an anti-virus and firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro) and it is free with updates for 1 YEAR. A MUST download if you aren't running anything right now. Very easy and quite a few corporations use the anti-virus because it is made by Computer Associates.

4. Those with broadband connections (cable modems/DSL} really... REALLY need to be running a firewall. Dial up users are at risk too but since you have an ALWAYS ON connection you are more easily infected/hijacked.

That is about it.

Why does the ezArmor Suit firewall application want me to uninstall McAfee Virus Scan? Is it safe to do this? I am not sure where my McAfee disc(s) is, so I am not sure I should do this.......help Rant.

It wants you to do that because it isn't a good idea to run two virus scanners at the same time.

Do you have a current McAfee subscription? If so then just install ZoneAlarm. If not then McAfee is not doing you really any good without updates so uninstall it.

Not big at all.. MAYBE 10-15MB at the most? So if you are on dialup then yeah... it may take 30min or so. NoCal can probably tell you better because I haven't downloaded it in awhile.

Referring to NoCalMike's post, that's how many minutes it took me to DL it.

Well, the firewall is acting up. It says something about TrueVector Internet Security shutting down. Then, as soon as I get online, it blocks access. I do the steps listed on the page, nothing. I disabled the firewall in safe mode. Everytime I activate the AutoDownload feature of the AV software, the virus terminates the app, since it terminates EVERY AV software. I should scan the PC in safe mode then, correct?

UPDATE: Hella SWEET. EZ Virus detected and deleted all the viruses that were giving me those problems! I guess after I get the burner, I won't need to worry about COMPLETELY wiping out the viruses. I can just repartition from within the XP setup. Thanks MrRant for posting that AV software.

If the firewall is being iffy then just uninstall the program and reinstall. You uninstalled any previous firewalls you had running before installing correct?

I had no firewalls running before. I will probably just reinstall it.
