New Iced Earth video

Recommended Posts

Yeah, on Launch.com you can see Iced Earth's "When the Eagle Cries" video, from their next album, set to hit on like, January 13th.

It's a decent little ballad, not great, but it is the first full-length song of theirs you can hear (I believe) now that Ripper is on vocals.

I miss Matt Barlow....

Oh, and Jon Schaffer looks like King Theodin.

He might put emotion into it, but he sounds almost as goofy while singing as King Diamond...ALMOST.

Oh, and if you don't think Ripper can do more than sing high, check out Judas Priest - "Blood Stained." He sings "dark" for half of the song. In fact, I don't think he goes that high at all in the tune. Awesome song, too.

Eh; I can see why some people would look at his singing that way. I don't, and I know lots of others who feel the same. Bottom line, I think the guy can do incredible things vocally - I mean, he can do the high-pitched tunes, but if you listen to "Dantes Inferno", you'll realize that he can growl pretty good too. Plus, I just like the sound of his voice, to be honest.

And besides, Iced Earth is commonly called power metal (though I'd argue that somewhat; they have power metal elements, but they don't really sound like it overall; too much of a heavy, thrash kinda feel to be called just power metal, methinks) and isn't that all about being goofy? (I'm kidding, dammit...I like power metal)

As for Ripper...I know that song (Keep in mind, I think you and I are the only people who perfer Ripper-Era Priest to Halford-Era). I know it well enough to be able to tell you that he doesn't stick to low singing without even listening to it. And, when listening to it, it appears to me that the only real low parts of the song are the chorus. (Other then that, he does a few shrieks, and some "not-as-high"vocals. It's not a great example of his ability to sing low, I'd say.

Question though - Are those low growly parts on the chorus and a few other parts all him? I can't honestly tell for all; Some still sounds like him, some doesn't; I think it might be one of the other members doing it (It's also on "Bullet Train"" and "Cathedral Spires" to get a taste of exactly what part I'm talking about) because on their live CD (The first one they did since Ripper joined - '98 Metal Meltdown Live or something like that...I don't honestly recall) those vocals are still there, and I don't think they're piped in...I'm not exactly sure why I don't think they are right now (I'd have to hear the album again) but I don't. So is that him? Because if it is, I'm more impressed with his abilities, though I still can't see them being used very much.

But hey, I don't mind Ripper, like I've said. I think he's a decent singer, and I'll grant that he probably can sing low. But you know what? In my experience, he just plain doesn't. Does he from time to time? Yeah, I'm sure he does - but those times are few and far between (evidenced by, if nothing else, the fact that the song you directed me to hear in order to get a taste of his low vocals has few low vocal parts).

But hey, we're talking about vocalists, so I mean, it IS just a matter of preference. I happen to like Matt Barlow better, because I feel he can do more things with his vocals, and put more emotion into things. You don't - whatever.

I will say this though; I won't judge Ripper as the singer of Iced Earth until I can actually hear the whole CD. Personally, as it stands, I don't think he'll do as good a jab as Barlow could've done - but I could be proved wrong, and to be honest, I kinda hope I am. I WANT this CD to rock ass, and it probably will, but...I dunno.

And for the record, I think the main body of my current dislike for Ripper stems from the fact that, with him singing, Iced Earth just reminds me a LOT of Judas Priest, for obvious reasons. And dammit, when I wanna hear Iced Earth, I wanna hear Iced Earth -not Priest. Nothing against Priest, but they're two different bands.

You're right, he isn't Matt Barlow. And this is good. Because Barlow's voice was the only thing that hindered Iced Earth.

Barlow's voice is terrible. My friend and I actually walked out on them one time. Instrumentally Iced Earth is pretty good, but as soon as he'd start singing it was rather bad.

Hey, when I wanna hear Iced Earth, I'm not looking for Iron Maiden, but yet...oh, wait...

I'll take "comments I saw coming from 2 miles away" for a thousand, Alex.

Besides, I don't think that really fits here - Iced Earth obviously have strong Maiden influences, and that's not only known of the band, but expected. If you want to hear Iced Earth, then in a way, you want to hear those Maiden influences (Because it's hard to heat them otherwise). Else, I would assume you wouldn't listen to the band.

Again though, it's really a matter of preference. I happen to think the guy's an excellent singer. Some, obviously, don't. And I don't really think that CAN be argued any further.

Cést la vie.
