Three Stooges Marathon on AMC

Recommended Posts

Found out about this from Kotz' Twilight Zone thread, figured I'd share with any fans here. WSBK 38 out of Boston used to run marathons every New Year's Eve from like 8pm-2 in the morning, but they got taken off our cable a while ago, and they also wound up showing chopped versions of the Stooges eps rather than the original, un-interrupted ones they were used to. I plan on taping as many as I can fit tonight, since most of my tapes are getting up their in age. I'm just pissed I found out about it now and it's been on since 12pm.

I taped 6 hours of them yesterday, and FF'ed through most of the last half.

I noticed they did several shorts with the SAME plots (like the bet where some guy wanted to make them gentlemen through enviroment) and the Women Haters one was just terrible (being the 1st one made I think. Thank God they dropped the musical aspect)

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Woman Haters. I'm also not big on Men In Black, because of how often that one is run (since it's one of the more famous ones).

The society angle got used in quite a few shorts, to the point where some footage from the original society ep, Hoi Polloi, is used in most of them. Still, I managed to get a few eps I needed better copies of on tape, like Dizzy Detectives and The Sitter Downers, two of my faves.

I caught the one short where they were being made into gentlemen. It was funny at first, but it got old quickly. I used to love the Stooges. I had about 15 commercial master tapes and five 6-hour tapes from AMC of the Stooges, but sold them off in one big lot on eBay last year.

I love Malice in the Palace best. I turned the marathon on and fell asleep. Later that day my 6 year old was going on and on about how cool that show was and wanted me to find some of the Stooge Tapes I had bought a couple years ago. I grew up on the Stooges.

Either that type of humor appeals to you or it doesn't. The Stooges were slapstick masters with precision timing. They also had good chemistry with each other, including Shemp, and knew how to get the most out of various situations. As comedic actors, they could walk into a certain environ and say "ok, what can we fuck up and how bad can we fuck it up." I don't watch them diehard, but like and appreciate them.

Malice in the Palace was one of the first Stooge shorts I've got a vivid memory of. It was on the first Stooges commerical video that I purchased and I thought it was hilarious. I agree that the humor either is for you or it's not. Hit or miss, really. I find that watching a lot of them in a short time span, you'll be saying "miss" more often than "hit."

My absolute favorites had to be the Moe Hailstone ones where Moe was a sendup of Hitler, Larry was a sendup of Goebbels, and Curly was a sendup of Goering.

"Hail hail Hailstone, the dictator!"

As far as I know, there were only two of these but I can't recall the name at the time.

Disorder In The Court is one of my favorite ones, maybe because it's shown a lot more than others. Hoi Polloi (sp?) is good, but the plot has been used for several other shorts.

Malice In The Palace was funny as hell to.

What was the one where M, L & C became Doctors? "Paging Doctor Howard, Doctor Fine, Doctor Howard!"
