Religious Freedom in French Public Schools

Recommended Posts

Guest Cerebus

Looks like the same liberals who were so willing to defend France's right to "dissent" against the US's attack on Iraq aren't so willing to defend France when they deny their own people's rights as pertains to freedom of religion. Included in the ban would also be Jewish skullcaps and Christian cruicifixes.

Chirac must have a tongue of silver to be numbing people to the stupidity of it with this speech the article talks about. I want to hear it myself before deciding my stance in totality. But as it is, I think it's an incredibly bad idea.

The proposal was designed to bolster France's 1905 law separating church and state, brought in after a bitter struggle against the once-powerful Catholic Church

Separation of church and state doesn't apply in this case. The schools aren't the ones espousing certain religious beliefs. People have a right to their own personal religious beliefs, and can't be told not to express them in public if they don't interfere with others. This law would be quickly ruled unconstitutional in any reasonable constitutional democracy.

What the hell is wrong with headscarves? Or, for that matter, other religious symbols? Chriac has gone WAY too far here. I could care less if France has a tradition of secularism.

What really gets me is the Crucifix.

I don't know if I'm just odd or something, but I wear my crucifix in such a fashion that it falls under my shirt and is basically hidden from view.

What a stupid statement. You seem to be trying to say that defending a country's right to look after its own interests while at the same time criticising it for what equates to religious bigotry is somehow hypocritical of liberals? Where do you draw that parallel? Just because people opposed to the war had no problem with France and Russia looking after number one doesn't mean they have to blindly support the policies of those countries.

You say that as if its some sort of hypocritical statement when it's not.

It's perfectly acceptable to:

A) Say that a country is allowed to "dissent" and disagree wtih US Policy.

then

B) NOt defend and indeed criticize said country for denying their own personal peoples freedom of religion.

The first is alright and the 2nd is not. There's no contradiciton here... it makes perfect sense. Now, maybe in the case of France, its bad, but eh, its the French, whaddaya expect ;)

Only according to PFLPB logic (Popular Front for the LIberation of Partisan Bullshit, now with the use of both hands!!!) would it be hypocritical to look at both cases specifically and criticize or defend based on the actual issues instead of what country/party/ideology is involved.
