Bored 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 Going back to the original point of the topic about idiot fans I thought posting this would be appropriate. This is a post by an A's "fan" on an A's message board after the Angels have signed Vladimir Guerrero: This offseason has been a big fat joke for A's fans...we are cheering that we signed Kotsay and Kielty..woopty frikin' dooo... AMAZING OFFSEASON Billy!!! the Angels NOW have one of the best outfields in baseball...and it SUCKS to be an A's fan today... But hey, we have Jermaine Dye and his 11 million dollar contract...maybe he'll break .200 and 59 ribbies.... Go A's--let's TRY to win 75 games this year!!! It MIGHT get us third place.... Jeez and I thought I had an irrational reaction to the Angels signing Vlad.

They lost Tejada, but they have a big league-ready shortstop in AAA. They lost Foulke. That's all I can think of. They'll lose 21 more games because of THAT? Meanwhile, they've got three pitchers with a combined career record of 185-96. That's a .658 winning percentage. .658!!! All three of those guys are better than Bartolo Colon. And they've got two minor league guys to cover in case of injury. Besides, under Billy Beane, the A's have won 90+ for four years in a row. At some point, you have to believe your GM is a competant individual, and knows what he's doing.
HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2004 I'm really getting sick of these A's fans. They have a very potent pitching staff(Big 3 plus the slight emergence of Rich Harden) and a slight decent dare I say as good offense as last year and MUCH improved defensively

I think the typical fan who focuses only on their own team and who SportsCenter tells them to pay attention to can never truly ever be happy in the offseason. They only see the talent of the player's their team lost and don't see the talent of the player's their team brings in unless its a superstar like Vladimir Guererro. They have absolutely no clue how big of an upgrade Mark Kotsay and Bobby Kielty is over Chris Singleton and Terrence Long. Yes and it was absolutely ridiculous to think the A's are going to win only 75 games and that's why I decided to bring this one up and its shit like this that really sets me off when it comes to ignorant fans. I don't expect everyone to be an expert but damn get a clue.
LooseCannon25 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2004 I think the A's will lose about 10 more games because of the loss of Tejada. That's a former MVP and big time player they lost, and even though they have a ready shortstop coming up its not gonna make up for the loss of Tejada. Right now the division, imo, would fold out like this: Anaheim 95-67 Oakland 87-75 Seattle 86-76 Texas 74-
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted January 13, 2004 . Putting on that performance was grossly unfair to me, the fan. So we're even. Did you go to any of the games? If not, they don't owe you anything, since you were not a paying customer. If you did go to any of the WS games, you paid to see a professional baseball game and you saw one. What's unfair about that? I saw a team that didn't give a shit (for Lord knows what reason) barely even qualify for a "going through the motions" excuse. So the Yankees played 162 games to get to the playoffs, won every round before the WS, then get there and stop trying? That makes absolutely no sense. Why can't it be that the Marlins were just better. It sounds like you're saying as long as NY tries, they should always win. Why would you phone it in after putting in so much to get there? Did you see anyone on the team look genuinely disappointed after game six? I sure as fuck didn't. What are they supposed to do, break down crying in the dirt? Throw a temper tantrum in the dugout? You're only going on your perception, not any kind of reality. You didn't talk to any Yankee that night, so how can you say what they felt?
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2004 Tejada hit 278/336/472 last season. Is he really worth 10 wins all by himself? Lets do some quick Win Shares Comparisons. For those of you not familiar with win shares, they take a teams actual win total, multiply it by three, and divide them among the team's players..... 2003 ------ Long 11 Singleton 6 17 Kotsay 14 Kielty 12 26 9 Win Shares. That works out to three extra wins, just by fixing the outfield defense.
Bored 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2004 Also to add to that is Kotsay had 22 win shares when he was healthy the year before and I think its safe to assume Jermaine Dye will improve on his performance of two win shares. Hell if he just gets 11 win shares that's three more wins.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2004 I would add that if Dye doesn't, the A's will surely replace him with someone who will produce.
LooseCannon25 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2004 So, you guys are saying Oakland is gonna win 100 games this season...... After losing their All Star, and MVP award winner. Replacing him with a AAA shortstop. ok
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2004 2001- 102 wins. Offseason: Lost Jason Giambi, Jason Isringhausen, and Johnny Damon. 2002- 103 wins. You really can't underestimate the effect of replacing bad players with average ones. Its like adding a superstar to your team. Bobby Crosby should match Tejada's OBP of .332. I'm not saying they'll win 100 games, but they're the favorite to win the division in my view.
MrRant 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2004 I see the West as: A's - 91-95 Wins M's - 84-88 Wins Angels - 80-85 Wins Texas - Somewhere in the seventies
Bored 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2004 So, you guys are saying Oakland is gonna win 100 games this season...... After losing their All Star, and MVP award winner. Replacing him with a AAA shortstop. ok No not necessarily as we're pointing out the ways they will make up the loss of Tejada and how they have improved by a lot in the outfield. Tejada has 25 win shares last year so that's 8+ wins. Now just because you subtract Tejada doesn't mean they are automatically going to lose 8-9 more games. Whatever Crosby does he'll make up some of that but since they've improved in other areas he isn't going to have to match Tejada's production which he shouldn't be expected to do since he's a rookie. Oh side note to what I posted earlier I pointed out Rob Neyer's article on Vladimir Guerrero and it's effect on the A.L. West to a couple of the more ignorant fans on that A's message board. They immediately dismissed it because Neyer says that the A's have broke even this offseason which makes Neyer an idiot in their view.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2004 The 3 things I'd be worried about is whether or not Mulder, Hudson, and Zito will remain in Oakland after their contracts are up. This season. Oakland's good enough to make the playoffs, but what's different about this team that thinks they'll have success?

Oakland's good enough to make the playoffs, but what's different about this team that thinks they'll have success? Even if they don't stay, how many teams have three good pitchers like that for 5+ seasons? As for this season, experience.
