Video Game Gems

Recommended Posts

Super Bubble Pop on the PS1 is only $10 and is worth every dollar. If you like puzzle games then you muct buy this game! Its a basic bubble game where you have to match the colors. What makes this puzzle game fun are the some small differences in this Puzzle Bobble/Magic Drop clone such as the power ups, the clock, special tokens you must get to advance to the next level. In order to advance you have to either clear the level with a perfect clear by matching colors or get 3 of the special tokens. And then there is the soundtrack which is full of techno tracks.

I'll say this...head to Best Buy and you can get Beyond Good and Evil for 20 bucks already.

That was an awesome game that I couldn't stop playing until it was done.

It's short...but sweet...and now...cheap!

The PS2 version was only $10 at Circuit City.

Just for this week, I-Ninja on the PS2 is $20 at Best Buy and Crazy Taxi 3 was at Circuit City for only $10. I don't know how good it is, but Rogue Ops is $15.

I hear Rogue Ops is a Splinter Cell like game, but as a girl. Extended Play gave it a 3/5 and it looked actually pretty decent, for $15 .. I'd check it out.

I'll go old school and say Addams Family Values for SNES.

It plays exactly like a Legend of Zelda game, but with the Addams family style. Instead of boomerangs, you have Lurch's bowling ball, and Lightning bolts instead of a sword.

Only problem to me was it was a bitch when you had to do all the back tracking, considering the map is very bland.

Otherwise, awesome game.

Star Tropics for the NES. An awesome Zelda-like adventure which never got much respect.

The sequel was a lot better.

Agreed.

I got both for $.99 each when Toys R' Us was clearing out their NES inventory circa-1998.

I always enjoyed Jurassic Park Operation Genesis. Nobody really talks about it.

Also my friend a few years back found Chrono Trigger....box and all...at Movies Etc. for 10 bucks.

Jurassic Park for SNES was cool.

Kirby's Pinball Land for Game Boy is excellent.

Dude, I used to play Columns all the time on my Genesis. It was in one of those 6-in-1 games, along with Streets of Rage.

I liked Columns, and I don't know why.

And EarthBound. That's my favorite game of all time, and it never gets the love it deserves.

I concur with this. Although I haven't played it, River City Ransom is always reccomended as an underappreciated game for the NES.

I just beat the Adventures of Bayou Billy not too long ago. Fun game. I wouldn't reccomend it to everyone though.

One of my favourite games that I don't think got enough respect was Legend of the Mystical Ninja starring Goemon on the Nintendo64. This is what games are meant to be. Plain old fun. A great overall game where you only had problems controlling the camera a little but that didn't really hinder the game at all. The most enjoyment I've had playing a game in the last several years.

Columns is one of the greatest puzzle games ever.

1. Tetris

2. Puyo Puyo

3. Columns

4. Puzzle Bobble

5. Super Puzzle Fighter 2

6. Magic Drop

7. Bombbliss

8. Rampart

9. Klax

10. Mr Driller

This question depends, because there are lots of games that sold terribly and are rare but have such good word of mouth they sound like they're great, but if more people played them there wouldn't be such a big deal made.

SO3 basically is saying that about Suikoden II. However, I think Suikoden 1 is still a great game so I'd probably like two. It's not the most overrated RPG of all time, though. I'd say that has to be Final Fantasy VII.

Underrated by the mainstream and underrated by everyone--depends. However, in no particular order here are mine:

Beyond Oasis (Genesis) and Legend of Oasis (Saturn--just got it today!) -- Great Adventure RPGs that could have been Sega's answer to the Zelda games, if Sega weren't such morons at the time and resistant to anything and everything RPG-like.

Gunstar Heroes--I never even heard of the game until years later.

Neo Geo Pocket Color-- okay, not a game but a game system few people own with fantastic games on it.

Lost Vikings -- Very cool, very unique gameplay.

Rocket Knight Adventures -- Fantastic game. Konami rules.

Most of the games made by Konami during the 16-bit days...

Prehistorik Man (SNES)-- not to be confused with that lame Flintstones platformer.

Metal Slug X-- Every Playstation (or PS2) owner should have this. One of my favorite games ever.

Ristar-- BUTT-ugly box art aside, a quality platformer.

Shantae for Game Boy Color -- This is an excellent platformer with RPG elements, too-good-to-be-GBC visuals and art, unique gameplay techniques, and cool character designs. The sequel for GBA is on the way. Anyone who has been on the boards for a while knows my love for the game. However, it's underrated by just about everyone. Only flaw is the respawning enemies appear too close to you. Probably that'll be corrected in the sequel anyway.

Legend of the Mystical Ninja starring Goemon on the Nintendo64.

Could you give a little mini-review/more in depth opinion about it? There's a pharmacy that rents out games and often sells the older ones around here. It's selling a copy (box, manual, and all) for $12.88. Worth it?

Well, I paid $30 for it and I thought it was worth it so yeah.

Mini Review -- It's been a long while and my memory is horrid but here goes:

Odd word -- Odd which is probably why I love this game. I liked the atmosphere and the sense of adventure it gave me.

Plusses -- The oddness. This is one out there game and I loved that.

The ability to switch to different charactors to do different things to get you through a certain part of the game.

Some of the music -- It was cool to have catchy Japanese songs throughout especially on the N64 at the time since it wasn't a real powerful system. I think I remember the boss music being good.

Diffaculty level -- I thought it was a nice challenge

Bosses -- The bosses are all pretty fun to fight.

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

The laughing soundtrack
had me well.. laughing

Graphics -- Some of the graphics were pretty good.

Negatives

Camera control -- Not the best ever but I found it fine once I got the hang of it. If I remember right you had to wait for the camera to move sometimes.

I didn't really think anything else was bad except that I found myself wondering around in the open a little bit but I can't remember if that's just because I was stuck at the time. Nothing to worry about.

Here are about 9 reviews. EGM were pretty good fans of this game.

Or resistant to any decent idea. From 1994 after, Sega was at WCW level in ineptness (the 32X, no Sonic game and overpricing at launch hurt the Saturn, and if Sega didn't have their reputation tarnished, the DC would have lasted longer).

I loved Beyond Oasis so much. I would like to see another sequel for the GBA or even the Gamecube (in cel-shaded 3D, in the vein of LOZ:WW).

wildpegasus: So, Nintendo let a quirky, Japanese title to our shores with little "localization?" Cool. I'll give it a shot next time I'm out there.

DerangedHermit: Well, to be fair, the Saturn was a great machine, but Sega didn't know about how cheap the PS would be until last minute. Once you're put a system on the market, if you almost immediately cut the price 100 dollars you're displaying weakness and the confidence of stockholders and customers alike will be shaken.

It's usually only considered in cases of total desperation (N-Gage).

If they waited a few months down the line and cut the price to go with a killer app like Nintendo did this holiday season, they could have had something. Unfortunately, all the Saturn really had to show for itself was a bunch of 3D games that looked like crap compared to the Playstation, and the Saturn never emphasized its 2D power in the States much.

However, I'd agree on the rest. I vowed never to buy a Sega system again after they horribly burned me on the 32X. I broke that vow, though. Hey, the Dreamcast's awesomeness and a perfect port of Vampire Savior broke my resistance.

Although the Beyond Oasis thing really bugs me. Nintendo's Zelda games were a huge success. You have a really good game starring a hero with far more play mechanics getting rave reviews. You don't try to milk it and use it to your advantage: mind-numbingly stupid.

Sega would mainly market licensed titles. *shakes head*

Sure, Aladdin was a great game and Jurassic Park was pretty good, but in general you didn't really need to market licensed titles. They'd sell themselves, and the more hardcore gamers would pick if up if they saw good reviews.
