Silverdome and Caesar's Palace

Recommended Posts

Why did the WWF never go back to the Silverdome for a Wrestlemania after the success of WM3? Would they have not have done enough business without a match as big as Andre vs. Hogan? I would think they could have for the huge Hogan/Savage match at WM5.

What led to WM9 being at such a small venue, not to mention an outdoors one, like Caesar's Palace? Was the card held during the afternoon?

Thanks!

Hogan vs. Savage in the Silverdome (or any 50.000+ arena) would've been awesome. Considering the business WM5 did they probably would've been able to pull it off "easily". An environment like that certainly would've added to the legacy of this somewhat forgotten classic. Imagine Hogan/Savage breaking the WMIII record in LAs Memorial Coliseum. :headbang:

However, it couldn't happen because Vince McMahon had made a deal with Donald Trump who paid through his nose (actually Ivana's nose but he also paid for that so technically it was his nose) in order to get WrestleMania IV to Trump Plaza. The deal was for two consecutive WrestleManias so the venue for WMV was a lock long before the Mega Powers feud took off like it did.

I like the look of Trump Plaza, but the dead crowd, the stairs that wrestlers, including George Steele (who injured himself so he couldn't participate in the WMIV Battle Royal) and Mr Perfect, tripped on combined with the thought of Savage as defending champion in a huge arena makes the deal seem like a bad idea in hindsight. But then again, we don't know how much Vince got out of Ivana's nose.

WWF live attendance in general around the time of WrestleMania IX was very low and I guess they wouldn't want to risk putting on a WrestleMania in an arena that wasn't packed.

Hogan vs Andre is the only match that could of sold out the Silverdome...ever. While I'd love them to hold another Mania in Pointiac (use to live there) I don't see it happening. They couldn't sell enough tickets and it would look ugly on tv

Who cares? I was there and I loved it. I still do. The attendence record was 15,045.

Yes. I forgot what time it actually started though. Hmm, I'd say around 4:00 PM. Maybe even earlier.

But I heard that with the money they were paid by trump and the inflated ticket prices, that they brought in as much money as they would have putting them in huge arena's or stadiums.....

From 86 to 88, they actually ran house shows at the Silverdome, with large areas blocked off. Think they did around 30,000.

If I recall correctly, they used to block off part of the arena by hanging a big blue curtain up. They used to do the same thing when the Pistons played their games there.

IX was held at 4 p.m. Eastern time (the standard for WM and the Royal Rumble back in the day).

I could understand them not going back to Caesar's for another WM, but I'm surprised they haven't used it for any other shows, like smaller PPVs. Much cooler setting than the generic Thomas & Mack Center, and probably easier to fill.

It also has one of the coolest "looks" of any WWF PPV ever, IMO.

Speaking of PPV "looks', does anyone else not like the MSG look on PPV? I hate how the camera is focused on the entrance, and the entrance is always so damn small for the PPV's, but not RAW or anything. I know it's tradition, and I love it, I don't want them to stop running PPVs at MSG or anything, but it I just don't like how it looks. I've become a fan of the big sets and long entrances that the WWE has used for Wrestlemania the last few years.

I actually love how the MSG set provides something different and keeps it simple as opposed to the other extravagant sets they do for the PPVs. I like the whole thing they do with the doors and the Survivor Series 2002 set up was really neat. One of the things I notice about a PPV is always the set. The past few years they have been kinda slack in making a new set for each show as nowadays it's just the Raw set basically but hopefully WMXX's will look cool.

Didn't they just tear it down....?

Yep they did just hang a big ass curtain there for the silverdome when the pistons played there. I remember always wondering as a little kid why the fuck the curtain was there. And trust me there won't ever be another Wrestlemania at the Silverdome, if you've been there recently, you would notice that nothing really big happens there other than the state football playoffs. Any future WM held in Detroit will be at Ford Field or JLA which would suck. An Outdoor PPV in the summer at Comerica Park would be the shit though
