RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 Storm Country January 12, 2004 This past week our house show loop took us through eastern Canada. We started off in Oshawa, ON, which is more or less a suburb of Toronto, before heading to the Maritimes with shows in Halifax and St. John’s. I love doing house shows in Canada because the crowds are always very pro-Canada (gee go figure) and us Canadian boys always get a warmer than usual welcome. Oshawa ended up being very cool, as my Mom and Step-Dad were in Toronto this weekend so I got to hook up with them for dinner and they got to see me wrestle. Living on the other side of the Country from most of your family really sucks so whenever I get the chance for an extra visit I jump at it. The show itself was fairly uneventful but the same can’t be said for the rest of the tour. For some, completely unexplained, reason I am over like crazy in the Maritimes. The Maritimes, for those of you who don’t know, is the group name given to Canada’s Atlantic provinces. Our Saturday show was in Halifax, NS, and I may be more over in this town than any other city in the world. I’m not completely sure why, I think it is a combination of a lot of things. My strong Pro-Canada push in WCW certainly contributed but that does not explain why this city more than other Canadian venues. I think the Internet is also a strong factor. There doesn’t seem to be as much to do out here so I think fans spend a larger portion of their time online. This is not so much a knock on their city as much as just a realization that most entertainment events don’t venture this far east. When concert tours and other traveling shows map out their 6-8 Canadian dates for their World Tour, Atlantic Canada is more often than not over looked. I about as Internet friendly as the boys get and I likely spend more time with you guys, via this site, than I sometimes spend with my wife and kids. I seem to be the wrestler of choice for the Pro-Canadian, Internet Savvy, Wrestling fan. Or to put it in laymen terms, I’m OVER like Grover, baby! I had so much fun in Halifax. I wrestled a tag match with Val Venis vs. Tomko & Fertig (Two Developmental Guys) Val and Fertig were going to start the match but before they could even tie up the crowd broke into a HUGE “We Want Storm” chant. I popped huge and Val realized it was pointless for him to start the match so we made the tag and switched things up. The crowd couldn’t have been happier and they popped for everything I did. I did a few things with Fertig then tagged my partner back in. Unfortunately, for Val anyway, this was not what the crowd wanted. No sooner had he stepped into the ring another, “We Want Storm” chant erupted. This chant was followed by a “Make the Tag” chant, and I was damn near laughing out loud on the apron, while apologizing to Val, for the strong crowd reaction. There is nothing worse than being a baby face no one wants to see. Fertig and Tomko then cut Val off and started beating the hell out of him. The crowd continued off and on with the “We Want Storm” chants until I made the big tag and made my comeback. Again the crowd was with me all the way and I had the time of my life. Everything is so much more fun when the crowd is into what you do. It also doesn’t hurt the old ego to be quite probably the most over guy in the building. It doesn’t happen too often so I eat it up when I can. Sunday night in St John’s, NF, wasn’t quite as over the top as Halifax but there was a very strong, “We Want Lance” chant through out this match as well. If we could just do regular television tapings in the Maritimes (I don’t think Newfoundland is technically part of the Maritimes, but I group it together because we always run them together) I could be a top baby face and I would likely get my World Title run. In all seriousness, I just want to thank everyone who came out to the shows this week, and more importantly say how much of a difference you made to me. I had so much fun it was ridiculous. I was smiling from ear to ear and I owe it all to you. Thanks to all, and let me close by saying, “Halifax is Storm Country!” You guys are the best. Till next week. Guest The Ohtani of Time Report post Posted January 18, 2004 Do you think that Grover was more over than the rest of the cast on Sesame Street. He was an ok babyface, but Snuffy and Kermit got bigger pops at my house. Oscar was the best heel, I hated him, still do.
Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 I'm laughing so hard at the "We Want Storm", "We Want Lance", "Make The Tag" parts. ...I just can't believe they actually said those things.

AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 That's awesome. *I* I wonder what reaction HHH got. It seems he often gets huge ovations in Canada. I dunno if they just hated Nash and Steiner, or maybe they cheer him on for beating the crap out of HBK. The thought of Lance outpopping Jericho is hilarious, too. You hit the mark with why HHH is over in Canada. At least I think you did. And Lance outpopping Austin is funny. As Austin had to have been there.

I'd like to think they would boo his ass, because of the way he ragged on Lance prior to that face push that lasted all of a week, until Henry squashed and injured him. Guest Ghettoman Report post Posted January 18, 2004 Maybe Canadians just assume the long blonde hair thing = canadians. And that would of been pretty funny to see, although I'm sure Val wasn't having as great a time.

He doesn't do house shows, but come on. It's Canada. How often are they here? The WWE must announce Austin's at least could be there to sell a shit load of tickets (come on, the marks will still buy them). I wouldn't doubt the Maritime's would boo his ass, if Lance is that over there. ...now that I think about it, Austin probably wasn't there for that reason. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 Maybe Canadians just assume the long blonde hair thing = canadians. But only HHH and Jericho have that anymore, and I don't think anyone thinks HHH is Canadian. And that would of been pretty funny to see, although I'm sure Val wasn't having as great a time. Kinda odd, since Val's Canadian too. I'm, like Lance, stumped. It wasn't just that they were into cheering fellow Canadians, but Lance in particular. I wouldn't doubt the Maritime's would boo his ass, if Lance is that over there. ...now that I think about it, Austin probably wasn't there for that reason. I'm not sure what Austin usually gets in Canada, but I don't remember him being disliked. I wouldn't think they'd expect something like that, let alone Storm being mega-over in the region. RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 I think it's may be because Storm is seen as "the next Bret Hart" - or was positioned as such in WCW. I think the 'Times - next to Calgary - has the biggest Bret Hart fanbase in Canada...
