For the record, my brother is autistic, and he's never mistaken for being retarded. My friends never even say anything, I am probably the only one who is self concious about it when I think he is being "weird'. But no one else even notices.

Autism isn't the same as being retarded, ya retard.

Yes, autism != aspergers. It's high up on the spectrum of autism, but often people diagnosed with autism are completely different (and always retarded-like) from those diagnosed with asperger's (who just have some behavioral problems, almost always lack most social skills, have odd interests and have trouble learning in some subjects).

 

Most people with asperger's syndrome are just really nerdy. The ones that I met at my school (as an attempt to start a support group for fellow kids with AS), however, were nearly closeted freaks and I didn't luck out too well. One could only think about movies, and I don't know how to describe the other besides her senile old lady-ish appearance and mannerisms. By the time they got a normal geek with AS into the group, I was off to college.

Yeah. that's a very accurate description. I spent some time in a groyp home with other Aspegers and Autistic people. The difference between the two is so huge it's amazing. One of the atustic kids was obsessed with everything to do with babies, another couldn't go out into public because he liked to attack small children, and one had to were a helmet at all times because he tried to smash his head in.

 

One of the Aspergers guys I knew had an intense fear of being around people, to the point were he always wanted to eat lunch in a closet at the school. it too him 5 years to be able to eat with even a small group of people. but this kid was a genius when it came to computers. he made games, desgined programs, etc.

 

 

I'm very luck to be one of the few to have aspergers (which is the proper name for high spectrum autism. It's very sad to see how the lower functioning kids live.

THe reason I connected it with retardation is because I knew grewing up alot of people who called me retarded because of my problems and I've met others who had the same experince. also because of the large precentage of autistic people who suffer from mental retardation as well.

Yeah the Autistic guys went to an Off Campus school whereas we went to the high school and had Teacher Assistants.

 

and the over protectiveness can be really hard. The group home I was at was very strict that way. Kids weren't allowed to go make friends, or even go out in public except for group outings. they were well intentioned there but they didn't do alot to help the poor kids.

I've actually thought about putting in an application for working at a youth home to help integrate autistic youths into the community. If i do I have to take some courses but i think it'd be alot of fun.

Yah, I don't think it's a big problem letting brain damage people roam the streets.

 

Since teenagers going through puberty are let out of their houses so easily, I can't see the harm brain damage people can really do. Teenagers that are going through puberty are actually in most cases I've seen, a lot worse in the "should we let them roam the streets".
