Heenan/Orndorff revisited

Recommended Posts

Guest Corey291

The original question from MillenniumMan831 was:

Did Mr. Wonderful really fire Bobby Heenan twice? I ask because I thought he only managed him in 1986-87. Did he fire Heenan, take him back, and fire him again in the same segment. Or did Heenan manage Orndorff somewhat from 1984-85?

From the little I've seen of Orndorff pre-WrestleMania 1, he didn't have a manager.

My original answer was:

You guys are both right. Orndorff did fire Heenan twice, but there is no record to my knowledge that Heenan was even managing him the first time that he was fired. Here’s the story:

Apparently, Heenan was Orndorff's manager until shortly after Wrestlemania (although, to this day, no one can recall seeing Heenan managing Orndorff between 1984 and 1985.) In any event, Orndorff publicly fired Heenan to declare himself a free man. Orndorff would turn on Hogan and join up with Heenan “again” in 1986. Orndorff would fire Heen a second time in 1987 after Heenan added Rick Rude to the ‘Family’.

Well, I just recently got in about 3 years of WWF TV starting in 1984, and Heenan did indeed manage Orndorff during this time. He came down to the ring with him on a weekly basis during the fall of 1984. Around the same time that the Brisco Brothers and the Freebirds were there as well. Not sure how I (and everyone else) seems to have forgotten Heenan being around back then.

Mystery solved

Well, that mystery is solved, good work. Here's a Scooby Snack.

Now the other question is when did he fire Heenan on TV? (if at all)

Thanks for the answer.

Ironically, I won CV's Most Embarassing Moments on ebay which has the segment with Orndorff firing Heenan. Maybe a more complete answer will be on the video . . . errrr, I doubt it . . . but the preview shows Linda McMahon bark like a dog, so I'm fired up about getting the tape.

Bobby Heenan announced on the 4/27/85 episode of Championship Wrestling on Piper's Pit that Orndorff had fired him. The following week, on the 5/4/85 episode of Championship Wrestling following a match against Charlie Fulton, Orndorff officially fired Heenan on camera.

And the firing in 87......Orndorff and Heenan were being interviewed by Sean Mooney (I think) and Orndorff complained about being sick and tired of lying for Heenan and lying to the fans. Plus Orndorff was annoyed that Heenan was going around claiming Rick Rude had the best body in wrestling which,of course,Paul disagreed with.

Orndorff fired Heenan and then announce Oliver Humperdink as his new manager in that segment.

Not long after that, they announced the contenders for the Jesse 'The Body' Award which Rude won and Orndorff wasn't nominated. :D

"And lying to myself!"

"I'm sick and I'm tired.....I'm sick and I'm tired.."

You know, the oddest thing I remember about that interview is that ,as Paul is talking, Bobby Heenan is repeating what Orndorff is saying. Not aloud, but Bobby is mouthing along with what Orndorff is saying.

The first thing I thought was ....is Heenan partially deaf and lip reading?
