Rawknight 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 The crazed keyboard samples of “Tribe” by the Mad Capsule Markets fills up, and as the pumping bass drum line hits, the voice of the Maori Badass is overlayed briefly over the music… Words and images fill the screen, clips in slow motion and the basic values of those who walk the king’s road. Va’aiga: So let me ask you this Danny. Are you ready to walk the King’s Road? Are you ready to show your fighting spirit? Are you ready to bust it out like the Budokan? PASSION… Soitsu wa atama no naka ni hisonderu oto no uzu ni makare Soshite hakai suru kono genshou Sono mirai no tei kara umareru ji o The ugly toothless face of Toshiaki Kawada is contorted into an intense scream as with his arm locked tightly around the throat and his knee pressed firmly into the back of his opponent Kenta Kobashi. Kawada spits out through the huge gap in the top of his mouth as he torques on Kobashi’s neck, screaming and grinning wildly as his second oldest rival is trapped in the hold. TRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIBE! Why don’t you strike, justify your mind? Vader, no longer in his mask and with his familiar bull like features all showing grabs a firm hold of his back waistlock on Toshiaki Kawada. Vader holds on tight and falls backwards throwing Kawada high over his head, and as Kawada lands in a crumpled heap, Vader turns and allows himself a smile, celebrating his hitting of the LAWN DART GERMAN SUPLEX! TRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIBE! Why don’t you strike, justify your mind? Genichiro Tenryu lifts up Keiji Mutoh, slinging the bald headed former New Japan star up over his shoulder, as if he was about to hit him with a body slam. The grumpy old man of All Japan holds tight onto Mutoh and sits out, falling sideways and spiking the goatee bearded Mutoh with a NORTHERN LIGHTS BOMB! PRIDE… Sono ten o mitsume ima tsugi naru mono kara doko ni kotae o Sou tsunagaru kono atama no ue Kuukyo no yami kara Nukedasu chikara Collapsed to his knees, Jun Akiyama breathes heavily, his body draped in belts as finally the young punk has conquered his long time mentor, the immensely talentd, but laid out flat in a heap through exhaustion and Exploder Mitsahuru Misawa. Akiyama is practically brought to tears as the realization he’s finally won . TRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIBE! Why don’t you strike, justify your mind? Stan Hansen peers out across the ring and the massive Texan adjusts his elbow pad, signaling to the crowd he’s setting up for something a little special. Misawa turns slowly and looks at the big man, but he doesn’t react quickly enough as Hansen charges and FLATTENS HIM WITH THE LAAAAAAARIIIIIIIIIIAAAATOOOOOOOOO! TRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIBE! Why don’t you strike, justify your mind? Misawa again, this time eyeing up Hansen in their rematch! Hansen walks over, ooking to grab hold of the former Tiger Mask II. Misawa reaches into his reserves and finds something simple, smashing Hansen with an elbow… then a second.. then the famous ROOOOOLING ELBOOOOOW! HEART… Soitsu wa atama no naka ni hisonderu oto no uzu ni makare Soshite hakai suru kono genshou Sono mirai no tei kara umareru ji o Toshiaki Kawada is on the offensive again. Taking a step or two backwards he lines up the staggering Misawa and rushes in, planting his boot right into Misawa’s face with a kenka kick! Misawa reels away and the snapping sound you hear is the orbital bone of his face cracking! Misawa turns away briefly, only to turn back and FLATTEN KAWADA WITH AN ELBOW! Misawa pumps his fists and the crowd goes wild. TRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIBE!! Why don’t you strike, justify your mind? Takeshi Morishima grabs Yoshinobu Ogawa by the back of his neck as the long haired superstar stands, dazed. As his tag partner Takeshi Rikio makes sure to cut off any chance the leader of Wave – Misawa has of interrupting a count as Morishima lifts Ogawa stiright up and throws him away, the young star landing flat on his face after the AMAZE IMPACT! TRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIBE!! Why don’t you strike, justify your mind? “Dr. Death” Steve Williams places his head under the armpit of the unfortunate Kenta Kobashi, setting him up for a back Suplex. Willams lifts KObashi up and wheels him over, falling backwards and dropping Kobashi down head first with the HOMICIDAL BACKDROP DRIVER! Strike, justify your mind! Kenta Kobashi lifts Jun Akiyama off the turnbuckles and into a torture rack. Kobashi walks Akiyama into the center of the ring and falls to a side dropping Dangerous K vertically downwards from his shoulders, straight onto his head with the BURNING HAMMER! Strike, justify your mind! Jun Akiyama slides his hand between Misawa’s legs, and reachs his other arm round, grabbing his own wrist. Akiyama smiles and falls backwards, dropping Misawa down, not with a regular Suplex from a pumphandle, the Exploder but it’s bigger, nastier brother, the almighty head first drop of the EXPLODER 98! Strike, justify your mind! Misawa again, trapping Kawada in a standing head scissors before bending both Kawada’s arms back into a double chickenwing. Misawa lifts Kawada up by his underhooked arms and holds him up there for a brief half second. Misawa kneels down, dropping Kawada down onto his head in the TIGER DRIVER ’91! Strike, justify your mind! And it all fades to grey and slow motion as Kawada grimaces, trying to lift Misawa up from a standing head scissors. Kawada holds Misawa upside down, Misawa hanging out of the powerbomb position. Dangerous K kneels down, screaming with unbridled anger and just drops Misawa on the top of his head with the most devastating maneuver ever invented… the GANSO BOMB… Fade to black Stark white text. Coffin Surfer 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 Vader vs. Kawada wasn't a King's Road style match, or even a good match. The last real great King's Road match was Kobashi vs. Kawada 6/98, a little before Vader came around in All Japan. Tenyru vs. Mutoh also isn't King's Road, it was Shit Style. Akiyama vs. Misawa's late 90s matches weren't King's Road, and were actually more like New Japan matches in how they were built. "Misawa again, this time eyeing up Hansen in their rematch! Hansen walks over, ooking to grab hold of the former Tiger Mask II. Misawa reaches into his reserves and finds something simple, smashing Hansen with an elbow… then a second.. then the famous ROOOOOLING ELBOOOOOW" One of my all time favorite moments ever. Hansen's selling is so realistic it's scary, starting from the head up, his body gradually grows limp, until it works it's way down to his legs, and he just lifelssly crumbles to the mat. The match where Kobashi gives Akiyama the Burning Hammer is from NOAH, and it wasn't King's Road. I would have put some Jumbo in there, as well as some Taue(who seems to be unfairly left out, considering he played a huge role in advancing King's Road Style to the peak of it's complexity with his 95 Carnie matches). While Kobashi for the most part, played a huge role in destorying the style.
Coffin Surfer 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 To show the evolution of King's Road, I would do this: Everyone in the building rises to their feet as a bloodly Giant Baba gets all fire up in the corner, swinging his left arm around like a windmill to signal his brutal finisher. Once the blood soaked Harley Race staggers to his feet, Baba explodes out of the corner! Hooking Race around his neck, Baba drives him forward with a decapting Neckbreaker Drop! Moving at warp speed, Yatsu suspends Jumbo upside down for the Piledriver, while his partner Ricky Choysu leaps up on to the top rope. Palming Jumbo's large boots, Choysu jumps to the mat, helping Yatsu crudely spike his head into the canvas! There isn't a soul in the Buddoken sitting as Tenyru hastily shoves Jumbo down into a standing head scissors. The pop is deafening as Tenyru somehow summons enough power to peel his former tag partner off the mat, and flip him up on his shoulders. Popping his ass out, Tenyru deeply doubles over, driving The Man into the mat with the Powerbomb Pin! Seated helplessly on the top turnbuckle, a black eyed Kobashi desperately tries to fend the monstrous Stan Hansen off with some elbows. Fighting back with some headbutts, Hansen draws back his left arm, and plows it directly into Kenta's face, knocking him back into the ring with his infamous Western Lariat! (Use your 6/3/94 Tiger Driver 91 clip) Grabbing Kobashi by the throat, Taue hooks Mr. Orange Crush up for the Nodowa, while Kawada positions Misawa for the Powerbomb. As if they share one brain, Kawada and Taue simantanouesly lift their victims off the mat, and slam them back down with authority! Summoning up all his power, Misawa unleashes a primal scream as he charges across the ring at his rising foe! Showing no mercy Misawa slams his forearm into Kobash's jaw, dropping his former tag partner with his lethal Running Elbow! There you go, it takes you all the way from the 70s(the birth of King's Road) to 1/97(which in many ways signaled the end of King's Road). Plus it opens with Baba, and closes with Misawa, symbolism eh.

Coffin Surfer 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2004 spots chosen on quality of spot, not quality of match On Taue.. I have a lot of early 90s matches, but i'm not sure I've ever seen a Taue win. I need enlightening on that. Sure, but if it's gonna be about King's Road, you should chose matches worked in the King's Road style. There's not alot of good Taue matches in the early 90s outside of tags, since it took him a while to develop into a great singles worker. There's still alot of good stuff with him being carried from Misawa, Kawada, and even Kobashi. But by the 95 Champions Carnival he developed into one of the elite, surpassing pretty much every pro style heavyweight worker in the world with the exception of Misawa and Kawada(yes, he was even better than Kobashi), and started working some of the most advanced singles matches of all time. And Taue's won lots of matches, afterall he was the first native from his generation to pin Misawa for the Triple Crown.
Guest Fire and Knives Report post Posted January 31, 2004 I see where you're headed with this, and I definitely like the idea of reviewing the some of the more famous matches (King's Road or not, good matches or not) to give the rest of the fed an idea what to expect. As long as there are streamers involved in the entrances, I will be a happy man. K.
Rawknight 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2004 Well if I win.. *SPOILERS* The air is filled in a blur of red, gold and black as streamers for Danny Williams rain down from all directions. Danny Williams strikes a pose, maybe the last with his title belt and waits for the noise, the chants, the flashes and the streamer storm to die down.
