Early tests show deadly ricin in Senate mailroom

Recommended Posts

Guest Cerebus

Now ricin which is pretty nasty stuff as well:

Overall, the clinical picture seen depends on the route of exposure. All reported serious or fatal cases of castor bean ingestion have taken approximately the same course: rapid onset of nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and severe diarrhea with vascu lar collapse; death has occurred on the third day or later. Following inhalation, one might expect nonspecific symptoms of weakness, fever, cough, and hypothermia followed by hypotension and cardiovascular collapse. The exact cause of death is unknown and probably varies with route of intoxication. High doses by inhalation appear to produce severe enough pulmonary damage to cause death.

In oral intoxication, fever, gastrointestinal involvement, and vascular collapse are prominent, the latter differentiating it from infection with enteric pathogens. With regard to inhalation exposure, nonspecific findings of weakness, fever, vomiting, cough, hypothermia, and hypotension in large numbers of patients might suggest several respiratory pathogens.

From the FAS.

Very scary.

Is it any more or less lethal than anthrax?

I'm not sure, but it's 6,000 times deadlier than cyanide, and there isn't an antidote for ricin.

The first case of ricin in the mail that I can remember since this all started was over here near where I live, in Greenville, SC in October '03. I hear it's fairly simple to make if you just know what you are doing, as it's simply made from the waste left over from processing castor beans. I don't know how to do so, I don't want to know, but from all reports I read it's said to be very simple.

It seems like another little "terror scare" set up to scare the American public. A bit like the grounded planes a few days ago.

You're absolutely right, the government is sending itself deadly chemicals (wink ;) wink ;) ) in order to "Scare" the American public into thinking that we're at risk for terror attacks (we know better B-) ) so everyone feels forced to vote for Bush to stay safe. I'm glad you've seen through these propogandist tactics...

I think the terror alert colour bar does that. And yes Ricin is far deadlier than Anthrax.

Or maybe we'll hit Plaid level just before the terror attacks:

Wouldn't blue be below green, becuase green is between blue and yellow?

We need the Department Of Rainbows now.

Nah, first let's get those shoe-bombers and Talibans cleaned up. "Limp Wrist For The Terrorist."

I don't get the argument that we need Bush in office to feel safe. I think that all of the terror alerts and grounded planes do make the population feel less safe at home, but I don't think that's a good thing for this administration. It shows me that what they are doing is not working.

This is scary stuff. I worked in the Senate Hart Building this past summer and a good part of my job was processing mail.

Man, I should've asked for hazard pay...

Am I nuts or did Tom Daschle basically blame the "rhetoric of the right" for the anthrax sent to his office a year or so ago?

The GOP hasn't griped about the whole Republicans = Nazi rhetoric and the possibility that it might have been behind the ricin episode. Some was also sent to the WH, but didn't make it out of a mailing center.

Did I hear right that the letter that was potentially dangerous was sent by a disgruntled truck driver? I may be nuts, but I swear that's what they said this morning. Someone called Fallen Angel sent it as a protest to the mandatory rest breaks for truckers.

Yup.

It hailed from SC to boot.

Alas.

People are stupid. That's all.

Oh, and you apparantly really wanted to get that point about Daschle in here.

Nah. Mark it up to board errors and being too lazy to edit in "Whoops, double post"

Daschle, I think, was trying to blame Limbaugh for someone sending him anthrax.

You're right, it's all part of a secret plot run by the Illuminati, which George W. Bush happens to be a member of.

Don't tell anyone I told you that. I've got some protection due to my involvement with the Knights Templar, but those Skull & Bones buggers can be real assholes about leaked information.

Bush is the biggest tease ever. How many terror scares has this been now?
