I was talking to my dad the other day and he told me that apparantly Roger Waters wanted a "Beach Boys sound" for the backing vocals on The Show Must Go On and some of the other tracks on The Wall, and being Roger f'n Waters he obviously just went and asked the Beach Boys to do it.

So according to my dad what then happened was that Brian, Carl, Mike etc stopped work on the self titled album they were working on and learnt the parts Roger had done for them. Roger though thought that in order for them to sing it *properly* he should explain to them the story and the themes of the album to them. Which basically scared them off as Mike decided that it was too far against their image. Which annoyed Brian as he thought the idea was excellent.

So is any of this actually true? Or is my dad just making me an idiot be filling me with false Floyd/Beach Boys trivia?

I have never heard of this story before as I've never seen it written anywhere. But the Beach Boys' past is so muddy I wouldn't be surprised if it did happen.

Although, I can't really see Brian enjoying that kind of music, especially around that time.

Unlikely.

Ah! Just noticed that on the credits for the Wall it does mention that Bruce Johnson does backing vocals.

I guess that means either a)age is catching up with my dad and he's got confused, or b) Beach Boys did actually turn them down so if you want a Beach Boys sound you can't really do worse than an ex-band member.

Hmmm....

Bruce wasn't even with the Beach Boys when this was recorded. He had fallen out with Jack Riley, the manager, and left in 1972, only to return in 1979 to produce the LA Light album.
