RIP Mystery Science Theater 3000

Recommended Posts

I've only seen about 4-5 episodes that were shown to me by friends who were die-hard fans of the series, and I thought the show was horrible. I usually enjoy sophomoric humor AND bad movies, but the episodes I saw sucked hard. Maybe I just was unfortunate and saw only the worst of the bunch.

Angelslayer: Not a bad choice of eps there--but you dare mention Season 1 and leave out Robot Holocaust? WHY?! :P

Robot Monster's a good choice, but it really, really, really didn't even need any riffing. The movie is just that damn goofy. It's close to Plan 9 territory.

Maybe the problem was that you were looking for sophmoric humor?

That's only a relatively small portion of the type of humor they used. That's there, but there's also tons of pop culture references, some more obscure than others, running gags based on older episodes, references to movies by likes of Welles and Bergman, jokes based on movies that are pretty infamous in b-movie circles, etc.

I don't blame you though if saw, oh, say Mighty Jack, Hellcats, The Crawling Hand, or Bloodlust.

The first half hour was pretty good, but the riffing kinda fell flat after that

You could say that about a lot of the movies though

On a side note, I'm considering whittling my list from above down a bit, perhaps a top 15-20 recommend list

Yeesh Angelslayer, if you were to copy a bunch of your episodes onto blank tapes as a sort of "Best Of," I'd buy them from you in a second. And I'm serious, too, if you'd have any interest in this you should PM me or something.

I was always a big fan of the show when it came on, but I only discovered it in the rerun days. Always liked Squirm and the old Japanese movie where a superhero comes to save a bunch of kids from spacemen, mostly because those were amongst the first I saw.

On a related note, this week I bought the actual DVD's for Plan 9 From Outer Space, The Robot Monster, The Brain That Wouldn't Die, and I think two or three other old B movies since they were all on sale for something absurd like $20 for all of them... and I must say, The Brain That Wouldn't Die, while you can tell it's a B-Movie, sure did have some ideas and style effects that could be recycled into good movies.

But, yeah... seeing the show go is a shame, and I'll have to find some way to get some of the better episodes on VHS or DVD or something. Eh.

5_moves_of_doom: Sounds like you missed the entire Comedy Central run. I don't know how you'd feel about Joel (the original host), but there are lots of great episodes in that era. Plus, Dr. Forrester and TV's Frank pretty much smoke the Sci Fi villians except for Brain Guy.

Up to Angelslayer if he wants to do that or not, but I have a pretty good collection myself and tons of blank tapes stacked in my closet, so depending on who wants the task and what eps should be picked, we can hook you up. If not us, there are tons of tape traders who will be glad to help you out. Perhaps we can recommend some or warn against the bad ones.

Frankenhooker. :) It's a goofy b-movie comedy.

However, as for "The Brain..." itself--huh? That movie is really sleazy and misogynistic as far as I'm concerned. A guy cruising around town looking for strippers and models and other unsuspecting young girls, trying to find the right one to decapitate...sleazy music playing the whole while. Probably I'm not looking at the things you're talking about, but there are so many other movies on the show that could have actually been done right.

Oh, and yeah--Manos is probably the most popular episode in the entire run. Why? I guess since it is one of the very worst movies they've ever done, and it isn't as boring as most of the others that are close to it--such as Monster A Go Go. Plus it has Torgo with his haunting theme music, the Master, and the borderline worst directing. It stands out because nobody has ever seen anything quite like that.

I was always a big fan of the show when it came on, but I only discovered it in the rerun days. Always liked Squirm and the old Japanese movie where a superhero comes to save a bunch of kids from spacemen, mostly because those were amongst the first I saw.

Invasion of the Neptune Men or Prince of Space. The main difference is that PoS (not a flattering abbreviations...) is a far better movie. It actually has a memorable villain, and the hero actually goes into space.

Neptune Men...well...it stars the Prince's brother-in-law or something who didn't earn the privilege of interstellar travel yet, fights a bunch of aliens who have zero personality, can barely move, and make "the chicken men of Krankor look super dignified and intelligent." Also, he plays second-fiddle to an "electro-barrier" and the final battle features WW2 stock footage, and the two sides battle until the aliens have destroyed everything but "Space Chief" stopped them before they annihilated the rest of the world, so he's a hero still.

I guess Chief was assigned to watch over us while Prince was off in another galaxy. Kinda like Neil Connery was brought in when his brother was busy.

Yes, that's another episode they did: a James Bond ripoff starring Sean Connery's brother, and they hired several Bond co-stars to appear in it.

While I generally wouldn't have a problem trying to spread the goodness of MST, I'm a busy man this semester and free time is a bit limited, but I'll see what I can do

As for my own collection, I'd like to get Incredible Melting Man to replace my copy that my dad fucked up.

Eh, agreed on most of the points, I just thought bits and pieces of it could be reused somewhere to a better effect. Kind of thought the movie starting out with the soundclip of "Please... let me die." was neato, even semi-haunting, and at least the guy's second-in-command-sidekick was given some backstory. That said, it'd probably be a lot better with two robots and a stoner (or was it in the Mike era?) ripping on it the entire time.

And the other one I was thinking of was Invasion of the Neptune Men... I just remember a lot of laugh-out-loud moments in that, like where the kids notice the GIGANTIC building-sized spaceship in the middle of a field and Mike's like "Oh, well I can see how they missed that."

Anyway... yeah, getting these on tape sounds quite awesome, but since I haven't seen too many episodes, I'd have to leave the picking to you. I'd want two or three specific ones, and at least a few to represent each season... but as for which ones and how many, that really depends on what you think are the best and how many episodes you're willing to copy.

But yeah, any real stand-outs, in your opinion, that you think Angelslayer failed to mention?

As is the norm with how the SciFi Channel handles a franchise, they hyped the return of MST3K to cable a lot, and then as soon as it aired they totally abandoned the show, never advertising it and placing it in the worst time slots. I swear that network must be run freakin' chimps.

Comedy Central also had the best episodes, among them "The Paper Chase guy" movie and The Brain that Won't Die.

Damn, and I had this really bad urge to watch this weekend, for some reason. But, I was busy.

So, if Angelslayer would be willing to make some copies, he could just name his price.

As for my own collection, I'd like to get Incredible Melting Man to replace my copy that my dad fucked up.

I got that one, and it's excellent quality, too. PM me if you'd like to trade/buy it from me.

I'm making some tapes for #1 MST3K Mark currently, and I could easily do a few tapes here and there and for friends, however anything larger than a few could take a little time.

Of course, Tuesday no one else is going to be home and I got homework, so I could easily pop in and pop out tapes every now and then. I have a pretty good collection. Nothing like those traders that have every single ep including KTMA, but I have a good selection.

I could make copies for any of the eps that would record well. I won't record any available through Rhino, except for the extremely-rare, extremely-limited Amazing Colossal Man. I lucked out and managed to pick up that one at a CD Warehouse.

If others are interested, I could put a list in tape trading and I'll see what I can do.

The only major deficiency in my collection is, surprisingly, Sci Fi eps. I never thought to tape episodes myself during the initial runs, and when Diabolik originally ran, I thought "cancelled" meant no reruns. Thought Sci Fi just pulled the plug and closed up the show. It is only since last year that I started taping Sci Fi eps, but eps containing movies whose rights expired a while ago aren't available to me.

So, I'd be glad to offer some reasonable prices on my stuff, or I'd be glad to trade.

Oh, I see.

As for the MST3K version--it was the very first show with Mike on the SOL. The previous episode "Mitchell" featured Joel escaping from the SOL, and Mike was sent up to replace him.

Joel isn't a stoner, either. :P

And the other one I was thinking of was Invasion of the Neptune Men... I just remember a lot of laugh-out-loud moments in that, like where the kids notice the GIGANTIC building-sized spaceship in the middle of a field and Mike's like "Oh, well I can see how they missed that."

Oh yeah, those matte paintings just jump out at you sometimes. Then of course there's the fight with Chief battling a bunch of the aliens...really wimpy looking punches and kicks, with the aliens tumbling over Chief...one even just falls over by himself. "He was trained by Bruce Lee...bowitz."

And of course... *mushroom cloud* "Grandpa tries to set his VCR" -- Mike.

Anyway... yeah, getting these on tape sounds quite awesome, but since I haven't seen too many episodes, I'd have to leave the picking to you. Ehhh...except for the almost unanimously panned ones I've listed, it's tricky. Sometimes on MST3K boards, I'll find a bunch of people who really like an episode I don't care for, or dislike an ep I really like. A lot of things affect how much you'll enjoy it: type of mood you're in, type of humor you go for, number of viewings, the movie itself, the host segments...

The Joel era is more focused on obscure pop culture than it is more straight-forward humor. Mike was good with a lot of one-liners and relied less on the pop culture stuff. For example: Space Mutiny keeps the references to pop culture to a minimum (how they missed that the movie used stock footage from Battlestar Galactica I don't know), and it's mostly one-liners and no-nonsense jokes, in rapid fire succession. The nicknames for the protagonist are classic.

Contrast to a Joel ep, Amazing Colossal Man. The pace of the riffs are a lot slower, and much of them are obscure pop culture references. Some episodes have a lot of riffs that are clever and funny, but not the sort that will put me on the floor rolling. There *were* Joel eps like that, though.

So, if you can tell me what sort floats your boat, I can help you out.

As for recommendations Angelslayer missed...let me get back to you on that. I'll have a pretty long list, probably. :D

I love pop culture references and the like, but I've mostly only seen Mike episodes, and those always worked for me... I'm sure Joel would too though, really. I saw a DVD of the Brain that Wouldn't Die episode the other day and am gonna go pick it up later in the week probably, but aside from that... I dunno.

I suppose I'll just trust you: If you'd compile a sort of "Best of" of reasonable length/episode amountage that spanned both the Mike/Joel eras, then I'd buy it for pretty much any reasonable price that you named. So yeah, when that free day of yours comes up, if we can decide on a solid list of episodes, I'd like you to copy some for me, and just name a price. Shouldn't be too complicated, as long as I get my MST3K fix. I NEED Neptune Men, dammit!

Anyhow, PM me about it or something, or direct me to the Tape Trading boards, and hopefully we can work out a good list of episodes and a solid price for this, and we'll be on our way, hopefully.

While the later in between segments/host segments weren't so great, it did feature one of my all-time favorites in cardboard cutouts of Mike, Crow, and Tom with horrible prerecorded dialogue discussing Hobgoblins.

"That sure was a bad movie, won't you?"

I'll do my own list. I sent basically the same thing to 5 moves in a PM, but what the hey...

Season by season.

KTMA/1: Very rough, very little riffing. However, either Robot Holocaust or Robot Monster are good picks from this season. I can't copy Robot Holocaust, but I have a great copy of Robot Monster.

Season 2

Kinda at the transition period here. Some good eps, but lots of ups and downs. The sublime Godzilla vs. Megalon and Hellcats in the same season (tsk, tsk)

Recommended:

203 - Jungle Goddess w/Phantom Creeps pt. 1

207 - Wild Rebels

212 - Godzilla VS Megalon (one of my top 5 from any era of the show)

Available through Rhino: Catalina Caper

Season 3:

Cave Dwellers is an excellent pick up, as are the Gameras. A season of cheese caused the riffing to shift to a more pop-culture riff style. Very strong season, though. A hell of a lot of great episodes.

Recommended:

302 - Gamera

306 - Time of the Apes

310 - Fugitive Alien

311 - It Conquered The World w/Snow Thrills

312 - Gamera Vs. Guiron

318 - Space Force: Fugitive Alien 2

320 - The Unearthly w/Posture Pals & Appreciating Your Parents

321 - Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

Available through Rhino:

Amazing Colossal Man (discontinued, but I can make a copy)

Cave Dwellers

Pod People

The Unearthly

Season 4:

Maybe I haven't seen the eps in these enough, but the season starts out very weak, and ends on several strong notes, with the excellent Hercules episodes bridging the gap. However, the tapes I have of the early eps aren't very good quality. However, recommendations that I can make you good copies of include:

404 - Teenagers from Outer Space

408 - Hercules Unchained

410 - Hercules Vs. The Moonmen

411 - The Magic Sword

414 - Tormented

418 - Attack Of The Eye Creatures

420 - The Human Duplicators

422 - The Day The Earth Froze w/Here Comes The Circus

423 - Bride of the Monster w/Hired! pt 1

424 - Manos: The Hands of Fate w/Hired pt 2

Available Through Rhino:

Manos: The Hands of Fate

Season 5:

The season featuring the Mike/Joel switch, and tons of great episodes as well. I don't have the original Hercules episode, but I saw a half hour of it and want it. Santa Claus is a must-have ep, but my copy is so crappy I can't get you one. Fortunately, a lot of the season's best episodes are on video, but there are still plenty they missed.

Recommended:

502 - Hercules (I need this one myself, so no copy I'm afraid)

505 - The Magic Voyage of Sinbad

508 - Operation Double 007

519 - Outlaw of Gor (This one is kinda rough picture quality)

521 - Santa Claus (Need a better copy, though)

Recommended Rhino Releases

Mitchell

The Atomic Brain w/ What About Juvenile Delinquency?

The Wild World of Batwoman

Eegah!

Season 6:

Has some excellent episodes, however, the Coleman Francis ones are often hard to sit through if you're not used to movies that bad. We also a few Wood pictures, but none of them are as much of a scream as Plan 9. I really wished they'd have done Glen or Glenda instead of Sinister Urge. *shrug* There are a lot of gaps in my season 6 collection, though. However, for Rhino eps, do not miss the cheesy 70's jigglefest Angels' Revenge: hot babes of many varied race and hair color are trying to get drugs off the street ("Never has the war on drugs been so sexy!), and a bunch of washed up sitcom stars make cameos (plus, one scene seems to have been written in mind for Bob "Gilligan" Denver, but I guess he passed on it).

Recommended:

601 - Girls Town

604 - Zombie Nightmare

621 - Beast Of The Yucca Flats w/Money Talks and Progress Island

617 - Sword and The Dragon

624 - Samson vs. the Vampire Women

Recommended Rhino Releases:

R 606 - Creeping Terror (This one is really, really bad. And pretty boring, so maybe you wouldn't want this one...I warmed up to it though)

R 609 - The Skydivers (beware, Coleman Francis flick!)

R 619 - Red Zone Cuba (ditto)

R 622 - Angels' Revenge (GET IT!)

Season 7

The last season on Comedy Central, made up of only six episodes. I'd recommend them all, and the weakest of them (Laserblast) is worth it because it is the last CC ep.

Unfortunately, a lot of the Sci Fi eps I haven't seen in so long that it's hard to remember which was good. Although I have plenty of favorites from the Sci Fi years. Eh, next post I guess...

Who the hell is Paper Chase Guy?! I don't know what movie you guys are talking about.

Oh, Angelslayer, I have Gorgo, too.

I'm in a bit of a rush now, but I'll read your list later Andrew

The Paper Chase guy refers to Robert Ginty, who was the lead character in the Italian Mad Max ripoff Warrior of the Lost World featured in episode 501. The Paper Chase remark refers to his one season on the show "The Paper Chase" (based off movie of same name). Why they chose to focus in on this fact is beyond me. Ginty would best be known for his role as Lt. Wiley on "Black Sheep Squadron"

Well in a few years stations might start to pick up some episodes as the movies become public domain. A good deal already are so it could be possible for a station to just pick up those episodes.

Okay, no wonder I didn't remember--haven't seen that ep in years and don't have it on tape.

Andrew's list and mine seem to diverge on all but the most widely acknowledged "best" episodes (Manos, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Cave Dwellers, Zombie Nightmare, etc.)

I won't argue any of his contentions save for one, namely that I feel Laserblast was the strongest episode from season 7 (the whole "going out with bang" concept, I believe). I'd say Night of the Blood Beast was the relative weakest, but it was still pretty good

As for Gorgo, I'd probably want to see it first (though that would be difficult now, obviously) to ensure it's an episode I want on tape... back when I was a teen I was big on being a completist, thus saving even the episodes I really didn't like (see: Girl in Lover's Lane), but now I'm not really looking to round out my collection, specially when several episodes from season 10 sucked IMO

That's part of what makes the show so great. One person's "eh" episode can be another person's favorite, and vice versa. I go to the MST3K Review board, and see tons of people with very different views on episodes. I didn't even look over your list when making mine, I just had fun with it and gave my honest opinions. So, better or worse, there they are. :)

However, keep in mind that you have some episodes I'm lacking.

I won't argue any of his contentions save for one, namely that I feel Laserblast was the strongest episode from season 7 (the whole "going out with bang" concept, I believe). I'd say Night of the Blood Beast was the relative weakest, but it was still pretty good

Well, depending on my mood, I really like Laserblast most of the time. It would be a standout probably in a full season, but in the very brief season 7 with Brute Man, Blood Beast, Deathstalker, Melting Man--it doesn't quite work for me as much.

Blood Beast is awesome to me. Cheesy Corman movie, rapid-fire riffs a la Space Mutiny, good host segments, the pregnancy riffs = great episode to me.

Laserblast seemed way too overwritten, because they WERE trying to just clear out old writing room jokes. I loved the ending of the show, the ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? running gag, the riffing on the aliens, the mocking of Deezin, Roddy McDowell jokes...

Well, in retrospect, I probably liked it more than Brute Man, although the crabby store owner, the Chicken of Tomorrow short, the creeper jokes, etc were pretty damn funny, although most of the Brute Man host segments were weak.

Hey, picking out favorites with this show is damn hard. :P

If you wanted to do some tape trading with me, I could tack on a bit of the Gorgo ep after one of the other ones, and you can get a preview of the episode. Since the episode gets much better later on (IMO), you can get a rough idea of what you think of it.

I've been busy since Monday-ish and haven't had a chance to get online for more than maybe five minutes, and even now I'm in a rush... got three huge tests on Friday and I just haven't had a spare moment. But Andrew, when I get a chance, definitely within the next two or three days, I'll give your episode suggestions an in-depth look and we'll finally get down to the episode-copying, eh? I've decided on a few episodes, but want to give everything a pretty detailed overview before I choose, so... meh, yeah. But hey, who exactly were most of the characters during the Joel area? I mean TV's Frank and whatnot, that is.

I mean TV's Frank and whatnot, that is.

Sure. Thursday is my last day of classes (I scheduled Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday. I have night classes, but it gives me a four day weekend...), so that works fine for me, too.

As for characters:

CONTAINS SPOILERS!!

.

.

.

.

KTMA/1st seasonish: Dr. Forrestor, Dr. Earnhart , J&tB

Comedy Central: Dr. Forrestor, TV's Frank, J&tB...

Mrs. Forrestor was introduced, but didn't become a regular character yet.

"Mitchell" episode-- Mike introduced, Joel leaves the show via the "Deus Ex Machina" escape pod hid in a box of Hamdingers. Mike gets shot up into space to take Joel's place. Forrestor and Frank relocate from Gizmonic Institute to Deep 13 (Joel owned the copyright on the "Gizmonic" term, hence the change).

"Samson vs. the Vampire Women" episode-- Frank gets taken to Second Banana Heaven by Torgo the White.

Season 7: "Did I tell you my mother's here?" Pearl Forrestor moves into Deep 13. Six eps later the satellite is cut free from the umbilicus and....well, watch Laserblast when you get the chance. Somewhat prophetically, the ending references a sci fi movie classic.

.

.

.

.

The Sci Fi era you're familiar with, so no need to detail that.

Frank you likely saw at the end of the Soultaker episode in a cameo (Joel made a cameo too, of course). Basically, he's the bumbling assistant of Doc Forrestor (with simply stunning hair) that he found working at a drive-thru. Qualifications? None, really. However, they get along very well, and Forrestor has a lot of fun killing him and torturing him all the time.

Dr. Earnhart, the original assistant of Forrestor, was more his peer although he was rather irritating. Although, creative differences (Earnhart was played by Josh Weinstein, the first voice of Servo) caused him to leave the show, because he preferred the riffing to be spontaneous rather than scripted, and he also was a lot younger than most of the crew so there was a gap in that respect.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection Volume 5

We have more information about Volume 5 of Rhino Home Video's "Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection" series. The release date is March 9th. It will feature episodes 821- TIME CHASERS, 908- THE TOUCH OF SATAN, 1003- MERLIN'S SHOP OF MYSTICAL WONDERS and 1006- BOGGY CREEK II.

Special features on the set will include introductions by Mike Nelson (similar to those in the last set, but Mike tells us they will be somewhat longer), full-length interviews with Mike and Kevin Murphy, and the original trailer for "The Touch Of Satan."

Before you ask: Based on our conversations with our source at Rhino we don't think the contents of this list should be read as an indication that it's only Sci-Fi Channel episodes from this point on. Our source asked us which episodes fans would like to see next, and we referred him to the poll we conducted a couple of years ago...

As soon as we know more about what's next from Rhino, we'll be sure to pass it on.

Sweet...
