HBK's Superkick setup.

Recommended Posts

Ok it seems like ever since HBK has comeback his setup to the superkick has been the same in almost every match. He does the flying elbow then he either nips up or slowly gets up then he warms up the band for the superkick.

Back in the day HBK would hit the Superkick just out of nowhere but, now he just does that setup. Of course, he doesn't always lands the superkick when he does the setup but, still it's getting pretty old.

It harkens back to the older days circa 80's 90's when there was a big buildup so the crowd can see it coming. it was easier to simply suspend disbelief for those 30 seconds. But these days no one wants to take the time. At least everytime HBK goes for the Kick when he does his setup stomp, it never works anymore. early, mid 90's yea, maybe on Raw or the other shows of the day when he would go against nameless jobbers yea sure. But not to named talent. Superkicks are only successful when the opponent doesn't see it coming.

Trivia is right, when exactly did the whole warming up the band thing work anyway? Sure the whole stomping and waiting thing telegraphs the move, but since the telegraph gets recieved about 95% of the time and a dude counters, I'm not seeing the complaint here.

It's just to get the crowd into it. If he's facing any respectable opponent, he never hits it while "tuning up the band". Usually if he hits it, it is out of nowhere.

Case in Point..

The Iron Man Match with Bret.

When he "tuned" the band, Bret countered into a sharpshooter but Shawn won with a surprise Superkick from nowhere when Bret was charging.
