Placebo, you're really barking up the wrong tree with this Thrash/Scream business (unearth is a thrash band? news to me.) Anyway, not like I'm expecting you to memorize some kind of heavy metal lexicon, but at least have the common decency to know what it is exactly that you don't like. I suspect you're a poor soul whose only forays into anything beyond the pale has been some Six Feet Under..if you don't mind me being a dick, what are some of these scream metal bands which you don't like?

While I wouldn't say Unearth is full blown thrash, they do a lot of the same screaming/roaring bullshit that makes me hate the genre. They were also on the White Trash Thrash Metal (or something to that extent) tour, so my mind puts them in that category from that as well.

In the past, I've found Opeth, Walls of Jericho, In Flames, and Nevermore tolerable. And even then, a lot of them incorporate normal singing into their sounds, which is likely what attracted me to keep listening in the first place.

My big thing is that I'm a lyrics guy. When people say that certain nu-metal bands that bandmates that use repetitive cords, bland bass work, etc., I just don't see it. With any kind hard metal, I can not get into the music (ESPECIALLY live) when there's no fucking chance of understanding the lyrics unless I either look them up or spend an hour breaking it down.

I'm no aficionado, but I've listened to enough by now to realize that it's not for me.

How is it that *I* a deaf person be able to clearly tell what most bands are saying after 1-4 listenings?

I'm a lyric person too clearly...it's there in METAL as well...

unless you like trite shit like DP's lyrics.

Many metal bands have great lyrics. I find that the better lyrical bands usually have cleaner vocals, which makes sense because if your just going on like Skinless does about tearing up people and shit, it really doesn't have to be that eloquently done. A band like Type O Negative or Lacuna Coil needs good lyrics since the way they perform is more vocal oriented.

Acid Bath. Seriously. Acid Bath. Riffage more intricate than ANYTHING you'll get out of Shuvel, Primer 55, Linkin Park, Disturbed, Staind, Element Eighty, or ANY of the chuga-chug uNmetal bands, with easy to understand lyrics that can be best described as sinister psychedelia.

Dax Riggs is a MARVELOUS melodic vocalist who isn't afraid to get harsh. There's no growling (which is what I think you're annoyed by.) Brutal Death is definitely not for everyone. Thrash on the other had, encompasses Slayer, and if that's what you're calling putrid, I may be forced to Stab.

If that's the case, there are far better areas of non-harsh-vocals metal for you to be checking out than nu-metal, as I wouldn't exactly call Mr. Backwards-Hat and friends capable lyricists

Fred Durst is John Lennon compared to the lyrics for Smile Empty Soul's music.
