Panic Room - (8.0/10)

I've had many chances to see this, but never bothered, I finally saw it this morning.

The plot is nothing special, yet it's realistic. The acting is great, especially by Foster and Stewart. The visuals/camera work is excellent. David Fincher is money in the bank.

Rio Bravo - 4.5/5

Put anybody else besides John Wayne in the lead and it might've gotten 5/5. I HATE John Wayne. The rest of it was good, though.

God of Cookery - 9.5/10

Downloaded it on a lark and it is now one of my favorite movies in a while. Never takes itself seriously and is great because of it. Kung-fu cooking is something we need to see more of.

You can tell the way that Tarantino got his education for his career, because his films are a shitload of style and not a lot of content - but they're still great.

Today, in school...

Hot Shots - 7/10 - I dont think this movie holds up very well. Most of the jokes and gags fall flat, but overall it's a hell of alot funnier than most of the new "slapstick" movies like Not Another Teen Movie

Oh, and Australian made-for-Showtime flick. Not bad (**3/4). Page is here.

Today, I saw some of mrundercoverplakat.jpg

I've seen it in it's entirety, and it's also a **3/4 affair.

BF, have you seen the predecessor and/or prequel in that series?

I watched Battle Royale on Channel 4 last night (in the UK).

I don't think it quite lived up to the hype, and I think there were too many characters which made it hard to care about some of them. The ending also bugged me, as it seemed like a cop out (although I'm probably just bitter that Mitsuko didn't win). Still it was quite a good film, with an interesting concept and a good cast.

The whole tv series version of Best Intentions, running in excess of five hours. Having read the script I can understand that it may be a bit problematic to film, but hooboy, Bille August just has too much respect for Bergman. Not to say that it was bad or anything, as it's well acted and despite the formal problems with the script, with a braver director this could have ended up really good as there's good material in there.

That brings me to the biggest problem with the series, namely Bille August's direction. Beyond the previously mentioned stuff, his direction is just wholly void of any kind of personality and any sense of purpose. Why does August frame the way he does? Why does he pace the cuts this way? I see no adequate reasons personally, making August's work here even more frustrating. And his use of music was just totally fucking abhorring.

This sounds overtly negative, as I did find the series as a whole to be passable, but it's just frustrating to watch because, as I previously stated, with a more interesting director this would most likely have been SO much better.

Tombstone - 9/10

You and I sure to seem watch a lot of films. Either that or we're posting in here for the hell of it.

Tombstone is definitely the best in that series, surpassing the quality of Wyatt Earp.
