Alexander (2004) 2-10- this is probably the worst movie of the year and the worst movie Oliver Stone ever made. Nothing in this movie made sense, it looked like the writers had alot of ideas but were not smart enough to expand on any of the 5 or so plots that were done. If there is such of a thing as a butch chick flick war movie this would be it. People were laughing at the romantic subplots in the theater.

Road to Perdition (fourth viewing)- ****/****

Probably one of the best gangster films ever made. I strongly recommend it, even if you aren't a fan of Tom Hanks.

yesterday: 'a very long engagement'

holy fuck was this movie frustrating. it's got some moments that are among the best i've seen in any movie this year, but the story constantly derails itself and goes on & on. no flow or momentum at all. i don't think jeunet had any idea what kind of story he was trying to tell.

Today I rewatched Peckinpah's The Getaway for the first time in years. 'Twas plenty good. Despite his flaws I love Peckinpah. The action scenes in this are expertly shot and edited, as is to be expected, and Peckinpah manages to summon up an apropriate sense of escalating frenzy. Sure there are problems with the film, among others Ali MacGraw, while not as bad in it as I remembered, is too bland to carry her role. Not as great as The Wild Bunch, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid or Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, but this is still top notch Peckinpah. Steve McQueen is the king of pragmatic cool.

Alexander - B-

The movie just DRAGGED for ever and I'm not the biggest fan of Stone's directing.

B- seems pretty generous then.

Why do we need boxcovers for all of these? I think most people know the movie by title alone, and most of the time it's a rating and comment on the movie...without even knowing what the movie is for another minute.

Anyway...

Man on Fire

7.5 out of 10

Could have been a much better score, but it was too long and just dragged in the beginning setting up the relationship with Crease and the girl...could have been trimmed down.

Apocalypse Now Redux

7/10

The overall package (cinematography, sound) was great, but some parts of the film were just lacking. If it had just been the regular cut of the movie I probably would've rated it higher, considering most of the parts I disliked were Redux-exclusive (the French plantation, the Playmate affair); they just made the movie drag.

In defense of the Redux, it was great to see more of Robert Duvall's awesome Kilgore character, and the funeral for Clean was well done.

Overall creepy film. Set in Venice with good suspense and a very well built plot and backstory.

New Police Story - ****

Jackie Chan is finally back with a good action movie. The video game stuff was stupid and some set pieces were rehashed from his earlier movies (the bus stunts especially) but the rest was gold.

Boiler Room - ****

Giovanni Ribisi continues to be brilliant in everything I see him do, and it has Vin Diesel in a suit! Good look behind the doors of (crooked) stock brokers, the scene where they all watch 'Wall Street' together was genius.

The Manchurian Candidate (2004) - ***1/2

Not nearly as good as the original, but I didn't expect that. The story was modernized nicely and the acting was fine, but I missed the ironic tone and the surreal stuff from the 1962 version.
