EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 A recent TWIB on ESPN Classic alerted me to this gem of a game, from 7/4/85. Mets @ Braves It was quite possibly the most insane game ever played. a 90 minute rain delay delayed the start of the game. Another delay for 41 minutes in the third. The Mets tied the game in the top of the 9th. Howard Johnson's two run home run gave the Mets the lead in the 13th. Terry Harper hit a two-run shot for the Braves to tie the game. The Mets scored a run in the 18th, and with two outs in the bottom of the inning, victory seemed assured. Then Rick Camp (career OBP: .109) tied the game with a two-out, two-strike home run. A five run outburst by the Mets in the 19th put them ahead again, but the Braves fought back, scoring two. Rick Camp again batted, and struck out with two on and two out to finally end the game, after 4am in the morning. The planned fireworks ceremony went off as scheduled, angering local residents.
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 Eh, I'm watching a MUCH better NY/Braves classic game on YES right now. Oh, how I despised the 80s.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 4, 2004 Author Report Posted April 4, 2004 The Yankees actually had the BEST overall record that decade. They just didn't win the title. The 80s were an odd year for championships.
Bruiser Chong Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 The Yankees actually had the BEST overall record that decade. They just didn't win the title. The 80s were an odd year for championships. No surprise AS despised the 80s.
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 The Yankees actually had the BEST overall record that decade. They just didn't win the title. ::Ahem:: <
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 4, 2004 Author Report Posted April 4, 2004 Blame the divisional system. If the alignment in the 80s had existed in the 90s, the Yankees wouldn't have even made the playoffs in 96 or 2000.
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 2000 was an ugly year. I don't think they even won 90 that year.
The Czech Republic Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 1980s World Series winners: Phillies, Dodgers, Cardinals, Orioles,Tigers, Royals, Mets, Twins, Dodgers, A's. Quite an ecletic assortment of teams...feels like the 2000s.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted April 4, 2004 Author Report Posted April 4, 2004 87 wins. And for all the bitching about parity that followed that season, I never saw a season in which competitive balance was so even. No team dominated that year. Its a damn shame the Mets had to spoil everything. A Yankees/Cardinals World Series would have kicked ass.
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 I'm gonna take this opportunity to comment on my game. I don't know guys, pinch hitter Paulie just struck out. It aint looking good. ::Laughs merrily::
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 Top of the order to start this inning. Hopefully we can make up this 3 run deficit!
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 Mark Wohlers is warming up in the pen! This can't be good!
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 Belliard dropped the ball! 1st and 3rd, one out!
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 Jim Leyritz is up. Damn. Better not get my hopes up. ::cackles::
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 THREE RUN HOMERUN! TIE GAME! You gotta love the King. He does that everytime I see this game.
HarleyQuinn Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 Currently 1983, Phillies vs Orioles World Series Game 5 just started on ESPN Classic.
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 Hush. No one cares about 1980s World Series. We're heading to the top of the ninth!
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 Andy Fox pinch runs for Cecil, and Strawberry hits an infield single. Bases loaded.
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 GOD DAMNIT DUNCAN! Bottom of the ninth coming up, top of the Braves order.
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 I case anyone cares, I legitmately don't remember anything after the Leyritz homerun, so I have no clue how or when this game ends. I know who wins (obviously) but thats it.
Slayer Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 This is post-whoring of the highest magnitude
The Czech Republic Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 I've seen whores do less whoring than this
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 Bases loaded walk! The moron walked Boggs! 7-6 Yankees! This is post-whoring of the highest magnitude Hey. Yankee games are one of the few things that make me happy anymore.
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 Klesko drops the ball. 8-6 Yankees. And this is no different than giving play by play during the play offs.
Guest Anglesault Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 Two long fly balls to The Rock end the game YANKEES WIN~! Wetteland always had to make it dramatic.
