SteakGrowsOnUecker Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 I've gotta say that I think Styles is overrated as well. Back in 98 when I first got to see ECW on tv I thought he was alright. However over the years his spiel just got old, you can only hear "OHHHHMY GOOOOOOOD" soo many times before you just feel like getting the mute button out. Catching those ECW dvds only helped me realize how much I really don't like him either.
ChrisMWaters Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 If I remember correctly, I think Gary Michael Cappetta (or however you spell his last name) was called up at one time by ECW offices to become Styles' replacement. For some reason, GMC turned them down...
Steviekick Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 The name sounds familiar, but who is GMC?
WhenDanSaysJump Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 The name sounds familiar, but who is GMC? Former WWF and WCW ring announcer, now working for ROH. I liked Joey Styles because occasionally his voice would do that whole reversed puberty thing and go squeaky. And not in a Lawler way, either. More like the kid from The Simpsons.
Guest Real F'n Show Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 Joey Styles is my favorite announcer still alive (RIP Gorilla) and I don't think he' overrated in the slightest, although I mark for just about anything ECW these days. Here's one for ya from Cyberslam 99: *Super Crazy does 10 corner punches on El Mosco as the Philly fans count along in Spanish* Joey: Thank god for Sesame Street!

Youth N Asia Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 My favorite ECW commentary moment was Joey Styles and Rick Rude. There's a Francine and Beullah catfight. STYLES: "CATFIGHT! CATFIGHT!" RUDE: "Hey, Styles, wouldn't it be great if..." then after that there's a long censoring *beep* STYLES: "Uh...CATFIGHT!"
Steviekick Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 LMAO. Rude was pretty good with commentary.
Youth N Asia Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 Yeah, he worked well with Joey. And it pissed me off that I have no idea what he said. It was from Wrestlepalooza 97
DangerousDamon Posted April 26, 2004 Report Posted April 26, 2004 I loved Styles and Gertner on commentary. Styles:OH MY GOD! A hurracanrana by Francine off the apron!!! Gertner:Forget a hurracanrana, that was a coochiecanrana!
Guest Real F'n Show Posted April 26, 2004 Report Posted April 26, 2004 from November 2 Remember 99: *Mike Awesome gives Masato Tanaka a sit-out awesome bomb from the ring apron to the outside through a table* *after about 5 minutes of some of the loudest holy shit chants ever* Joey: My mother's gonna hate me for this, but Holy Shit! Cyrus: Truer words were never spoken Joey Styles. God, I could reminiss about ECW all day.
Beast Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Watching some ECW DVD's, Styles annoys the f**k out of me. It's the same problem I have with RoH on tape, he overshills EVERYTHING. Most of the matches are nothing specials but he's constantly yelling with his annoying voice at a slam through a table or a rana. I have to watch those tapes with the sound off. Plus I have to mention how bad his intros are on the DVDs, trying to sound dramatic but looking and sounding like hes under the influence of some weird drug.

Joey Styles did look a bit like a slightly cleaner Jamison.
Guest Mr. Adam Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 The Styles opening on Path of Destruction was really bad. "Broken homes, broken lives, broken dreams..." I was watching with non-fans and just cringed. I really liked Cyrus's shtick though. Considering everyone knew that TNN was killing ECW,why not have some fun with it. "I'm the man who spent ECW's entire advertising budget on ROLLERJAM!" Tremendous.
