On the WWE Parents website (http://parents.wwe.com/) they have a small tidbit about Eugene Dinsmore.

Eugene Pursues His Dream

In the tradition of some of the most endearing characters of some of the greatest movies ever made: Forrest Gump, I Am Sam, Radio, WWE has introduced a new character, Eugene Dinsmore. Eugene is a person with a mental disability. WWE intends to portray this character in a realistic fashion. Eugene is a benevolent, loving, enthusiastic character who will successfully overcome the odds and achieve his dream of becoming a WWE Superstar.

* I guess they have gotten massive heat for this character and will adjust him soon, but i haven't really seen too much of him yet to say anything really...Has he had a televised match yet ?? Anyone have a clue as to which finishers he uses ??

I'll take it further...

just imagine Regal, horribly embarrased to be his manager before his first match.

Then the match starts and Eugene is slaughtering some nobody...and Regal's facial expressions of shock and realization that he's got something.

Then after the match, and in between his matches he could try to give him advice but Eugene is back to being mentally handicaped. Comedy GOLD.

Also...anyone who listened to Raven on WOL the other week knows that he already solved the Eugene puzzle. The character will get stale sooner or later...and when it does Raven came up with how to turn him heel. You just have Dinsmore say he was never retarded, but was making fun of those people and had to pretend he was "special" just to get a shot.

Then he goes back to killing people.

That is about as kayfabed as it is possible to get.

You're right Brian - build him up to seem completely harmless, and then he gets in the ring, the crowd feel sorry for him, and BAM, he just goes apeshit, cleaning house on everyone (with ability).

Oh, and I love that sig.

MLB 2004 is pretty damn solid in that area aswell.

Anyways, anything I could add to this has already been stated, however, I can honestly say I like the charactor, and am not offended in the slightest.

Are you mentally handicapped?

And Milo owns.

I wasn't insulting, I was pointing out that you probably wouldn't be offended if you weren't mentally handicapped or related in some way to someone that was.

The Eugene thing doesn't really bother me too much. I have a mentally challenged friend just in case you were wondering.

Uh, yeah...thanks captain obvious.

Lay it down Nicky.

...and to tell you the truth, I have no idea what Milo is...this sig is from an old board I used to post at. Some Aussie made it for me.

I would think the racism of the Bradshaw character, French people and even the Austin/Teddy Long angle would offend more people then the Eugene character.

Definitely. But give them time and they will go to far with Eugene.

Anyway, dragging the thread back on-topic.

Utter crap. Eugene has been a comedy character from day one, and there has been no attempt to play it straight. William Regal and his facial expressions are always funny, the bushwhacker impersonation, and the staring at Gail Kim in her underwear... all of it was designed to elicit laughter, and JR & Lawler back this up by laughing along at him. Pathetic.

Who cares? A handicap person gets portrayed as a comedy character! Oh no, that has never been done before in any form of entertainment!!!

LET THE ANGLE PLAY OUT!

Quit being a drama queen, Nikjohns.

I don't have any problem with them portraying him as a comedy character - in fact, it's getting over quite well. It's just bogus that they do that, and then proclaim him to be some sort of inspiration to handicapped people.

It took them about a month to do it with Katie Vick. Has Eugene been on for more or les than a month?

WWE's gimmicks are always based on stereotypes, plain and simple. I mean, you wouldn't see an obese man portrayed as something other than that, with it always referenced too, even if it wouldn't entirely be a gimmick, because unless WWE were really corny, that person really would be obese.

And, this is someone that doesn't have a "World's strongest man" gimmick.

Eugene is no different - WWE are portraying him as the average mentally handicapped person, or at least, as most people see mentally handicapped people.

The fans that you be offended are probably fans with no real understanding of how the business works. Sure, everyone knows it's "fake", but they might say "Oh, they're making fun of mentally handicapped people!" or the really stupid ones "Hey, they're exploiting that poor, mentally handicapped man!"

And the fans that WWE aim at are the ones most likely to be offended, but they got away with necrophilia, didn't they?

They didn't exactly "get away with it." About 1,000 affiliates dropped TNN/Spike TV because of it.

I realized the beauty of the Eugene gimmick while watching Backlash at Famous Players movie theatre last weekend (hooray for the death of the HU cards forcing me to pay to watch PPV!) Anyway, the marks ate him up, while the mentally handicapped individual a few rows up didn't comprehend he should have been offending her.
