Favorite Series Premiere?

Recommended Posts

I was watching the pilot of the Shield last night, and it got me thinking that it's truly one of the best series premieres of all time. Everything's great, from Vic Mackey beating the shit out of the pedophile doctor to the best ending ever, Terry Crowley getting shot in the raid because he dared to betray Strike Team.

The Shield definatly. It's now my favorite show on tv. Although I think shooting Terry was a little much, since he hasn't done anything remotly corrupt as that since.

While Oz is great (favorite show, next to Buffy) I though the first few eps of the first season came off a tad cheesey. It just seemed way too easy to kill someone in a maximum security prision. Although I did like how the whole episode was about a guy who didn't even live to the second.

They tried to do too much in the first ep I thought.

I love watching those episodes though. It's the same way with CSI, you see them blatently doing character exposition and trying to fill so much in and get across the message of the show that, in retrospect, seem fucking hilarious because its so obvious. Plus, usually the characters are totally different in the premiere than they are, say, 3 years down the road, so it's fun seeing Grissom be all bubbly, or Busmalas (sp?) taking with God.

Bob Rebadow talked to God...I loved how he did it in season 1, kinda hinted at it in season 2, said something once in season 3, and didn't mention it again till season 5 or 6.

Grissom?

BAH, I get Ribado and Busmalas mixed up all the time. It's been a while since I watched oZ, the last season didn't really do anything for me.

Grissom is from CSI, I crossed em over. They basically changed him from a happy-go-lucky but eccentric with a strong heart kinda guy to a much more colder character. Needless to say, it was a shock seeing the first episode.

The problem (if you can call it that) I have is that I don't think I have ever seen a show from its premiere and stayed with it - I usually have to ease into watching a show and get "hooked" almost at random. I think the only one is Angel. Firefly doesn't count because I tried to watch it when it aired but nothin happened - "Serenity" is a crucial episode, and they never showed it.

Most series premieres that I watch, I like. OK, Firefly's sucked large, and from what I understand that was probably the worst of the eps they could have opened with. Why you wouldn't start with the PILOT, I dunno, but this is Fox. They cancelled a decent show (Dark Angel) for one they love based on a scriptment, and then throw it in the timeslot of death, and expect it to do well, hoping for another X-Files-like miracle. And yet, I still don't think they're as stupid as the ABC suits.

Anyways, favourite (relatively recent) premieres: Dark Angel, Karen Sisco, Keen Eddie, Enterprise, Star Trek: Voyager (both pretty much downhill from there). I can't really say that I've loved any sitcoms right from the pilot, as they generally take time to really gain their comedic footing. OK, I liked Alf from the beginning, but what did I know? I was a kid then...

"The Train Job", which was the episode Fox first aired, has probably become my least favourite episode now, after watching it for the 5th time. All of the stuff I mentioned in my 2nd last thread applies - they didn't do NEARLY as good a job at establishing the characters, themes, universe like they did in Serenity. All the exposition gets annoying after a while.

Enterprise lost me at the opening theme song. Which sucked because I'm a Bacula fan.

Yeah, I can't say that I'm a big fan of Diane Warren music. Still, it could have been worse - I've heard a Rod Stewart version of that song...

While it is a spin-off, I liked the pilot for Angel a good deal. It did a nice job of establishing what Angel was all about and what he was looking for in L.A.

Angel started off VERY well. I had never seen an episode until last month when I rented the first season DVD.

Awesome stuff.

Well since everyone has done current shows I thought I'd go old school and say Miami Vice. From the opening scene with Peter Gabriel's "Rhythem of the Heat" to the gripping gunplay, the storyline, and chemistry between Crockett and Tubbs. And who could forget the scene in the Dayonta while "In The Air Of The Night" plays in the background. The pilot set the tone for Miami Vice and did a damn good job of it.

Another one is Knight Rider. It did a good job is setting everything up. It was dark compared to how the show would become more campy later on. Devon was more of an asshole, Michael was pissed for having his life taken and wanted revenge, and Kitt sounded more like a robot. And I love the way they first showed Kitt by having only his red scanner appear at first in a dark garage. And it showed all the cool things Kitt can do. Michael Knight had a kinda Batman/supercop thing going on in the pilot and the first couple of eps.

Season Premieres that hooked me on shows:

Deadwood and Wonderfalls did this year...so I guess they count.

Firefly's 2 part pilot didn't air first...so I don't know if it counts...but it might be my favorite ever.

I liked Buffy's premiere...but didn't see it when it started. I think it did a great job introducing characters and mythology.

Alias had a decent premiere I thought.

As opposed to all the other OZ episodes? (Loved the show, too, but damn, how can jails be overcrowded when so many people get killed there?...)

They seemed to go less overboard with the killing in season 2 and 3. By then I realized how good the show was and forgive the overkilling.

Which they way way WAY overdid in the last episode.

24x1 and x2.

Yeah, I agree. Although I liked season two's first ep a bit more because I never watched season 1 as it aired, only afterward on DVD.
