Kurt Angle: Should he retire?

Recommended Posts

Guest gearhead

Kurt Angle announced that he would be undergoing more neck surgery in the near future. Angle said that he expects to be back in action in time for SummerSlam in August. Kurt Angle to me, is one of those athletes who believes in "sucking it up". As he will remind you, he won an Olympic gold medal in 1996 with a badly injured neck. Angle wrestled against doctor's orders at WrestleMania XIX against Brock Lesnar, and turned in one of his best performances. Angle has already suffered three serious neck injuries, one before he even entered WWE. It is painfully obvious from his last run that Angle isn't going to give up the high-impact, high-energy style that made him one of the industry's favorite performers. Kurt Angle has a number of options available to him, options that most injured wrestlers don't have. Angle can continue as an on-air character without wrestling, since Vince McMahon is a fan of his promo skills. Angle could also make the transition to the McMahons' newest venture, WWE Films, where his comic timing and impressive look could come in handy.

Kurt Angle has been a favorite performer of mine, and of countless WWE fans, since he was called up by the promotion five years ago. He has nothing further to prove to any wrestling fan, and he has nothing left to attain that is worth the cost of what he would be risking. It's time for Kurt Angle to retire. I would love to see Kurt Angle go out gracefully from the WWE instead of having to leave the WWE due to being paralysed or something worse.

So, Do you believe that Kurt Angle should retire from wrestling gracefully due to constant neck injuries? Or do you think Kurt should keep wrestling and risk paralysis or something even worse?

If Angle choose to retire from wrestling he probably still get himself a Long term Money making contract with the WWE to be a trainer for the wrestlers.

Yes. This is starting to sound like he is putting way too much risk for this. This is like when I didn't want Troy Aikman to come back and I didn't even like Aikman.

Your job should always remain second to what you can do with your kids and Angle is getting into a place where he might lose the ability to walk or even his life for the WWE.

That's not worth it.

Oh hell yeah. The man came, he saw, and he conquered. He is going down in the records for so many feakin' things, and he is a 6-7 year veteran. As long as he stays in some sort of non wrestling role, it will be gravy. He's one of the best, and I dream of the Bret/Angle match (yeah, right).

He has to retire. It's not worth it anymore.

Plus, with the exception of winning the Rumble, he's reached every major goal that he was eligible for.

Yes. The man already has one finger paralyzed, he expiriences chronic numbness down both his arms, and will end up with at least 4 neck surgeries, that's insane. Kurt wants to get back in there for the fans, but he needs to realize we care too much about him as a person to watch him literally deterioate for our pleasure. He had a great run. Short? In some ways, but compare to say a football player 5 years before having to retire do to injury isn't unheard of. He has a full collection of great matches that he can be proud of, he's won numerous titles, including 5 World Titles, and that's not even touching his "real life" accomplishments of winning an Olympic Gold Medal with a broken freakin neck. Someone needs to sit down with Kurt, preferably Vince and let him know it's in his best interest just to have the full blown neck surgery. He will feel better and have a better quality of life, and should be offered both a continuing on air prescence as a manager/GM character and afterwards a lifetime spot backstage as an agent/office member. Heck, if he really wants to think optimistcally he could look at Shawn Michaels who had to retire at the same age from a similar crippling injury, and after 4 years of healing and rehabilitation is now back and putting on his greatest matches ever. Maybe, there would be hope for Kurt under similar circumstances. But another of the quickie surgeries and a return in under 3 months?! Fuck no. Kurt, please do what's best for you, your family and ultimately your fans. Get the fusion surgery, feel better, be able to play with your kids and continue entertaining us without hurting yourself. And maybe, in a few years, if that competitive itch is still there, you too can make a comeback once you are fully healed.

I wish there was some way I could send that to him, and like have all of us sign it, I really do...

I am in agreement...as sad as I am not seeing Angle in the ring anymore at least I'm not worried as I was everytime I saw somebody throw him into the damn turnbuckle or getting dropped on his head...I hope that this sentiment is echoed by everybody at the WWE offices...Angle will no doubt go down as one of the all time greats and I know everybody would be more than happy to see him as an on air personality...hell I would like to see him as an announcer...get rid of Tazz and put Kurt at the table...the man can contribute in so many ways but for right now in ring action just isn't one of his options

get rid of Tazz and put Kurt at the table...

Move Tazz to RAW, dump Lawler and put Angle on color on Smackdown. Now you're talking.

I believe, before Brock, WWF canon had him as the quickest rise from rookie to champion. How true that is , I have no idea.

I'm thinking it was Rocky but it mighta been Kurt.

I've wanted Kurt to retire for a year or so now just because he can't keep doing what he's doing. While it's a very bad time for him to retire for the WWE it's something that he really has to do. Maybe someday down the line he'll have healed ebnough to come back and then again maybe not.

I'm just curious...the man has so many accomplishments after winning every WWE title so quickly...can anyone tell me who his first run with the tag titles was with? And he was also a Hardcore champ as well so wouldn't that make him the most decorated champion in WWE history?

If he was a hardcore champ, that puts him on equal footing with Jericho for holding all the WWE titles available(at that time), except I don't think Kurt won the Light Heavyweight title and Jericho did. HBK also held all the titles available(at the time).

Definitely. What does he have left to accomplish anyway? He's headlined WrestleMania, held several World Titles, had a run as the top face and put on some great fucking matches. He's accomplished more in a 4 1/2 year career than some legends have accomplished in 30. It's certainly not worth the risk at this point.

Benoit.

Jericho was WCW Cruiserweight champ prior to leaving WCW,not Light Heavyweight Champ(but I see your point especially since he was the first Undisputed Champion)..and damn did everybody get a run with the Hardcore Title?

fuck wwe. no mans should be in a wheelchair becuz of them and their fuckheaded fans. angle DEFINITELY needs to be an announcer. lawler is so awful right now and tazz and michael cole are boring. he would be more of an addition in the commentating role than in the ring. also have him train those rookees

Learn to type or leave. Thank you.

Yeah, don't really care much for Angle because he hasn't anything left to do. (I really don't care if he wins the Rumble. I don't even care that Benoit won it in hindsight.)

I'd like to see him, Lawler, and JR as a tam. They'd be bad, but it could be still be funny.

Naturally, everyone believes that Angle should finally hang up the boots for good but it won't happen.

No Matter how many doctors say no and no matter how much the fans and the family and the guys say no...Kurt Angle won't get the fusion sugery and will insist that he go back into that ring for that high he gets.

Chris Benoit of all people should talk to Angle, tell him about Dynamite...Angle should see that Dynamite was the greatest wrestler of his time and So Is Angle(when you consider all the factors, he is a slight notch ahead of the Eddys, Jericho and Benoits)...and Angle isn't going to want to be a bitter old man.

He has nothing to stick around for...He fought the best...won everything in just 5 short years...Sure He ever went head to head with Flair or Shawn but know what? Bret never got to work with Angle or Eddy...But I assure you that Bret doesn't regret that when he can still be with his kids and family and walk.

It was indeed Kurt. He won the title in 11 months of his debut.

I agree. Further explanation is needed considering the factors that can be made for Angle's case don't strengthen the case for Dynamite.

Seconded. Angle can't touch Benoit on all fronts (including promo's.) Yeah, I said it. Fuck, Jericho cuts better promo's then Angle too.

Well, I don't count Benoit as a part of this ERA.

He is a part of the old breed, While Angle is the best to ever come out of the new style of wrestling.

Whilst Jericho trumps Angle with the Promos and Benoit trumps Angle with the Work-Rate...Angle is able to combine all the elements of the business into the best over all package.

No question is that Benoit is the best wrestler today but I wasn't willing to consider him a part of this era (which some might not agree with)...The same reason i wouldn't call Shawn a part of this era...He was bred in the 90's and has a different style then the workers of this era. Kurt Angle is the only one really without past training to take this new WWE "style" and make it work...maybe Benjamin in a couple years but not right now.

So don't take it as If I was saying Angle is a better worker period...He is just the best over all package today...or was before his injury.

After looking back at my inital statement, I worded it wrong and I should have explained it more throughly.

I agree that Benoit is of the "old guard" as he's more workrate and less mic skills....which isn't a bad thing.

And I could've swore Jericho held the Light Heavyweight Title. I swear I've seen him wear it.

Angle does need to hang it up but stay involved somehow I just dont see why he could continue to put his body on the line considering the state of the current product im sure he will wrestle a couple of times a year like Wrestlemania and maybe Summerslam
