Bruiser Chong Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Okay, they've won seven straight, the Sox have dropped five straight, the Yanks are playing like everyone thought they were. So, AS, are you going to be quiet for a bit? There's little reason to complain. Anyway, the Twins may have just had one of the worst fundamental innings I've seen in quite a while. I know the Cubs are pretty bad base-runners most of the time, but this was just ugly. They get a leadoff walk, FC and base hit and they never got a guy to second base. Bad bunt by Guzman got Stewart thrown out at second, Guzman gets totally fooled by thinking a base hit was a flyout, which leads him to heading back to first base to get thrown out. And then the guy who got the basehit gets caught in a pickle after having too big of a lead off of first. Just ugly.
Vern Gagne Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Fooling Guzman isn't the hardest thing to do.
Bruiser Chong Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 This game is never going to end and seeing as how I really couldn't care less about either team, I don't know why I'm still watching it.
Vern Gagne Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 It's a long game. You can't help but watch a marathon game. Or in my case listen on the radio.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 hell I'm watching on Gamecast. You have to watch super long games. and we've now reached the best part of the game, when both teams run out of pitchers.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Well, I was thinking about this year....or more specifically Pat Burrell striking out with the bases loaded to lose the game by one. Couldn't watch the game tonight, but Burrell gets a free pass for the game tying home run on Sunday. As an aside, how idiotic was the intentional walk to Thome? Move the winning run into scoring position, for Pat Burrell. Its not like he's David Bell.
Guest OctoberBlood Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Oh my. The Marlins signed Josias Manzanillo to a minor league contract. This must really boost Reidlings trade value now. Bleh.
Mik Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 I'd like to offer up something constructive, but I can't. When your bullpen is as bad as the Marlins has been lately (blowing 3 games in the past week), they'll take anything. It doesn't help that Chad Fox is out for a month, possibly the entire season.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Joe Morgan's Latest Column. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stor..._joe&id=1795582 Morgan claims RBI and runs scored are a truer indicator of a player's worth. While runs scored are the most important offensive stat, they hold little value as an individual statistic. Both stats are extremely team dependant, and there is nothing in them that you can not discern from OBP or Slugging percentage. What stood out for me, however, is this gem..... OBP by itself does not equal success. How often does a team get four walks in an inning to drive in a run? OBP is essential, but a good OBP alone does not guarantee a win or a successful season. The perfect example of this is the defending World Series champion Florida Marlins. Florida finished 15th last year in OBP (.333) among 30 MLB teams. But when the Marlins got runners on base, they were good at forcing the issue -- using the hit-and-run, stealing bases and exhibiting aggressive baserunning ... all of which help produce runs. The Marlins finished 15th in OBP in MLB. They also finished 17th in runs scored.
Bored Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Morgan has always stuck to that backwards logic. Going by that Aramis Ramirez was "worth more" than Barry Bonds last season as Ramirez 106 RBI to Bonds 90. Morgan has this huge thing against OBP for some bizarre reason when you consider he as a player had a career OBP of .392 but just a .271 career batting average. He seems to also think walks are overrated despite being 5th all-time in walks.
Guest Anglesault Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 The Yanks managed to sour me on OBP a little earlier in the year. Always on base, always losing in humiliating fashion. The walks meant jackshit when the next guy GIDP.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 the weird thing about Joe Morgan is statheads would have loved him. his game was total sabr style, but if you just walked up to him and said "stats", he would probably hiss at you like an alley cat or something.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Byrd's first HR of the year ties the game in the first.
Bruiser Chong Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Just to put into perspective how impatient the Cubs can be at the plate, Casey Deagle has thrown 29 pitches...through three innings.
sfaJack Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Clemens just tied Carlton for second on the all-time strikeout list.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Wagner collects the save. Wagner's K/BB ratio is now 20:0.
Guest Anglesault Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Clemens just tied Carlton for second on the all-time strikeout list. goodie
Guest OctoberBlood Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Dunn has his major league leading (tied with Bonds) 10th HR tonight.
Rob E Dangerously Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 KC fans are starting to annoy me. They want to replace Santiago (.253/.282/.387) with Stinnett (7 for 20) and they want to ditch Gonzalez (.274/.326/.452) there's some bias against guys who stand in the way of the "hard-working white" guy (the same is happening with David DeJesus and Aaron Guiel)
Guest Anglesault Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Well, Santiago is 80 years old. Is the other guy a young kid?
Guest OctoberBlood Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Is the other guy a young kid? Your lack of baseball knowledge outside of NY is hilarious. But, I won't hold it against you. (No, I don't expect you to know everyones age..) Stinnett is 34.
sfaJack Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Clemens passes Carlton for 2nd place. The victim: Raul Mondesi.
Guest OctoberBlood Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Modesi should steal that ball and auction it off since he's not getting a paycheck.
Guest Anglesault Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Is the other guy a young kid? Your lack of baseball knowledge outside of NY is hilarious. I know that Benito Santiago hs been playing forever.
