Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted May 5, 2004 Okay, they've won seven straight, the Sox have dropped five straight, the Yanks are playing like everyone thought they were. So, AS, are you going to be quiet for a bit? There's little reason to complain. Anyway, the Twins may have just had one of the worst fundamental innings I've seen in quite a while. I know the Cubs are pretty bad base-runners most of the time, but this was just ugly. They get a leadoff walk, FC and base hit and they never got a guy to second base. Bad bunt by Guzman got Stewart thrown out at second, Guzman gets totally fooled by thinking a base hit was a flyout, which leads him to heading back to first base to get thrown out. And then the guy who got the basehit gets caught in a pickle after having too big of a lead off of first. Just ugly. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Couldn't watch the game tonight, but Burrell gets a free pass for the game tying home run on Sunday. As an aside, how idiotic was the intentional walk to Thome? When your bullpen is as bad as the Marlins has been lately (blowing 3 games in the past week), they'll take anything. It doesn't help that Chad Fox is out for a month, possibly the entire season. While runs scored are the most important offensive stat, they hold little value as an individual statistic. Both stats are extremely team dependant, and there is nothing in them that you can not discern from OBP or Slugging percentage. What stood out for me, however, is this gem..... OBP by itself does not equal success. How often does a team get four walks in an inning to drive in a run? OBP is essential, but a good OBP alone does not guarantee a win or a successful season. The perfect example of this is the defending World Series champion Florida Marlins. Florida finished 15th last year in OBP (.333) among 30 MLB teams. But when the Marlins got runners on base, they were good at forcing the issue -- using the hit-and-run, stealing bases and exhibiting aggressive baserunning ... all of which help produce runs. Bored 0 Report post Posted May 5, 2004 Morgan has always stuck to that backwards logic. Going by that Aramis Ramirez was "worth more" than Barry Bonds last season as Ramirez 106 RBI to Bonds 90. Morgan has this huge thing against OBP for some bizarre reason when you consider he as a player had a career OBP of .392 but just a .271 career batting average.
