King Cucaracha 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2004 The official England squad has been announced... Goalkeepers: David James (Man City), Paul Robinson (Leeds/Tottenham), Ian Walker (Leicester); Defenders: Gary Neville (Man Utd), Phil Neville (Man Utd), Ashley Cole (Arsenal), Wayne Bridge (Chelsea), Sol Campbell (Arsenal), John Terry (Chelsea), Ledley King (Tottenham), Jamie Carragher (Liverpool); Midfielders: David Beckham (Real Madrid), Paul Scholes (Man Utd), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Nicky BUTT (Man Utd), Owen Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Kieron Dyer (Newcastle), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Joe Cole (Chelsea) Forwards: Michael Owen (Liverpool), Emile Heskey (Liverpool), Wayne Rooney (Everton), Darius Vassell (Aston Villa). Standby: Gareth Southgate (M'boro), Matthew Upson (Birmingham), Scott Parker (Chelsea), Jermaine Defoe (Tottenham), Alan Smith (Leeds), Richard Wright (Everton). The fact that Heskey, Vassell, Carragher and Hargreaves made it over some of the standbys fills me with little hope for our prospects. what date does this kick off on? Well...I think it's 26 days until the first game. What date that is I'm too lazy to look up.
Guest Dr. Wrestlingphysics Report post Posted May 17, 2004 No real surprises in the squad, but for all the defensive injuries and suspensions, it looks like it's up front where the problems lie. Owen: Looked out of sorts all season Rooney: Still young, and has only occasionally delivered this season (and should play for Ireland anyway) Heskey: Shit Vassell: Fast, but shit. Guest reekspeak Report post Posted May 17, 2004 I'm dissapointed that only four forwards made the squad, I know with 8-8-4, you have exact cover but if worse comes to the worst, a number of defenders can play in a midfield role and vice versa. To me, they could have easily dropped either Carragher or King for Defoe.
Guest Dr. Wrestlingphysics Report post Posted May 17, 2004 Agreed entirely. And with those forwards, extra cover seems likely to be needed!

Mystery Eskimo 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2004 There's just a serious lack of flair players in the squad. Sven's playing it far too safe. You don't need Phil Neville AND Carragher for a start, and that would allow Defoe or Wright-Phillips to go.

Vanhalen 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2004 Still no news on the US TV coverage? Well I've done a bit of hunting around for our American friends, and what I have found is this, DirecTV will have all games live on PPV(which seems a little weird considering its free in the countrys where it will be most popular lol), Fox Sports Worl will have most games on a 72 hour delayed time, and TSN will cover all games live. Guest The Rising Star Report post Posted May 29, 2004 I think Latvia have more chance winning Euro 2004 than England or Spain. Latvia show a genuine will to win for their country, while England is concerned with cheating players (M.Owen), asswipes and rapists. Spain always pull a bonar in play-offs. I hope Holland wins, but damn those Czechs are dangerous.
Guest The Rising Star Report post Posted May 29, 2004 Anyone remember P.Neville's idiocy in Euro 2000 against Romania? I said to everyone I knew that Portugal and Romania would go on, but noone heard. Anyway, they could get Peter Shilton out of retirement, and he would be a better keeper than D.James, the man who makes crazy dives for easy shots.

Well I think you are a little misguided there mate, but its your opinion and you are entitled to it, but I'd like to know where the rapist charge came from, given that all charges were dropped against the three players in question, of which none of them turn out for the national team, and also you discount hardworking players like Beckham, Gerrard, Scholes, BUTT, John Terry, Wayne Bridge and so on, but I do have a little soft spot for Latvia just for Marian Pahars, but I bet when you wrote that little uninformed post, you didn't have a clue who he was did you? Thanks, mate. I'm gonna be in San Francisco during Euro 2004. Does anyone know about any sports bars that might show the games either live or on delay? This tournament could turn out to be one of the great ones and I leave Europe and go to the one part in the world where I might miss most of it.

All strikers do it these days. I dont know who the "asswipes" are supposed to be, but the rapist thing is even more out there. No players have been charged with rape. Go and watch the tape of said penalty incident. Explain to me what Nick Barmby is doing, and then be pleased Phil Neville at least attempted a challenge. deancoles 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2004 Nick Barmby was probably thinking about his move to Liverpool at the time. Any thoughts on who will do a "Michael Owen" and shine on the big stage? I think Cassano(Italy Forward),Kallstrom(Swedish Midfielder) or Rooney are the best bets.I also think that at least one of the Latvia team will be signed by a Midtable Premiership club like Bolton or middlesbrough. Guest The Rising Star Report post Posted May 30, 2004 Thank you, barondeath2, but I know of Pahars and Verpakovskis the most out of Latvia. Yeah, I exaggerated about the rapist thing, but Beckham has been working "hard" somewhere else than on the field lately. Just watch the miserable performance at the end of the season for Real Madrid. Since I do mostly have the biggest eye on swedish players I would say Kallstrom (midfielder for Rennes) or Zlatan (forward at Ajax). Zlatan may be more known since he has played in the Champions League for Ajax but he hasn´t yet proved himself on the big stage. I would say that both Cassano and Rooney are on the same level as Zlatan, they have proved themself to a certain stage but need that big succes at a championship to really make there mark. Guest CurryMan Report post Posted May 30, 2004 What do you people think about the U21 (actually more like U23) european championship? Group A To 27/5 Serbia - Croatia 3-2 Italy - Belarus 1-2 Lö 29/5 Belarus - Croatia 1-1 Italy - Serbia 2-1 ------------ GRUPP B Fr 28/5 Germany - Schwitzerland 2-1 Sweden - Portugal 3-1 Sö 30/5 Germany - Sweden Schwitzerland - Portugal Most countries here has there a-team in the regular European Championship, so they don´t have there perhaps there best players here. But anyway a huge upset when Belarus won against Italy, and perhaps a small upset when Sweden won against Portugal. The 3 top teams move ahead to the Olympics. Just watch the miserable performance at the end of the season for Real Madrid. Not only is this irrelevant to football, but its not been proved. Even if it was true do you think Beckham is the only player at Euro 2004 who will have cheated on his wife? We could have been at that U21 Euro Championship if it wasnt for David Platt

Guest Museite Report post Posted May 30, 2004 I guess with Sven's squad I'd go with GK - James LB - Cole FB - Terry FB - Campbell RB - G.Neville LW - Dyer (someone has to go there) CM - Lampard CM - Gerrard RW - Beckham S - Owen S - Rooney (although if I could have the squad I'd get rid of Heskey and have Alan Smith in, and also Hargreaves or Vassell out for Defoe and the Replace Rooney with Alan Smith)

DCMaximo 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2004 Sad fact is that Thierry Henry scored more goals this season than Rooney, Vassell and Heskey put together, with all three of them failing to get into double figures. That'd be my big concern for England- when the second highest goalscorer in the squad is a midfielder (Lampard), it doesn't say much for the strikeforce. Hell, even Andy Cole broke double figures. Oh, and I hope Russia lose every game. By an embarrassing amount. Shower of bastards.
