April 30: DAY OF THE DEAD sequel wraps!

While rumors of a DAY OF THE DEAD remake continue to fly around, Fango has learned that a sequel to George Romero’s 1985 film, titled DAY OF THE DEAD: CONTAGIUM, has quietly wrapped shooting in LA. Produced by Taurus Entertainment, which owns the rights to DAY and TWO EVIL EYES, the follow-up was directed by Taurus president and CEO Jim Dudelson and vice president of production Ana Clavell. Previously, Dudelson directed the modern Poe update MORELLA, the campus slasher HORROR 101 and something called MUSEUM OF THE DEAD; Clavell recently helmed the sequel HORROR 102. We’ll have more details on the new DAY soon.

Dusk of the Dead would be a better title, however this reminds me of something interesting from homepageofthedead.com.

"As mentioned in 'The Filming' section, the film which was made in 1985 was not the original version which George Romero intended to produce. Instead, due to a disagreement with the film company, it was a some what reduced version.

Although some of the characters from this original script can be found in the final film, very little else remains as the two differ radically.

A lot of effort has gone into this project to ensure that it not only gives the reader the chance of enjoying George Romero's stunning original concept for the Day of the Dead, but it also does so in a user-friendly manner that also presents the script in a format as true to the original's as possible, even down to the font in which it was printed.

Most importantly it allows you, the reader, to see 'what should of been !'"

Maybe this one is based on Romero's original script.

Keep dreaming

This is just a micro budget film from a tiny studio that somehow owns rights to Day of The Dead. Romero didn't use his original script because the studio slashed the budget after whatever disagreement he and the studio had. So, I doubt this studio has enogh moneey to film the original Day.

Yeah, I figured as much, but never let it be said I was never optimistic.

We can't hope for too much, but hopefully this will be decent or at least watchable.

I'd hope at least for "Zombi(e) (2)" quality. Technically that is also a sequel to Dawn of the Dead, because the guy who re-did Dawn for a Euro release (where it was called Zombi) made a sequel to it that, while not as good as a Romero film by any stretch, was a good zombie movie (it's available here as just Zombie).

Then, on the other hand, we have Children of the Living Dead. John Russo, one of the myriad persons who have the ownership rights to Night of the Living Dead, crapped out the "30th Anniversary Edition" of NotLD. Basically, the bastard took NotLD and bastardized it beyond recognition, adding a horrible new soundtrack and sound effects, cutting out footage, adding new "original footage," and changed the ending. It was done to renew his copyright on NotLD and set up his own sequel to it, Children of the Living Dead. It sucks. Hard.

...okay, pardon my little horror-geek rant.

Anyway, this all depends on just who is making it. It could either be some dimbulb who thought the Romero films were "cool and all, but a little dull," or it could be a talented young independent director with genuine appreciation for the Romero films and decided to give his own twist to the storyline while still keeping the subtles and charm of Romero's flicks.

Judging from the title, I assume that they're going to at least use the basic storyline of Day of the Dead.

Dario Argento did the foreign edit of Dawn. Lucio Fulci did Zombie/Zombi 2.

Actually, it was never intended to be a sequel. It was just seen that way because of the naming fiasco over in Europe. It was released as "Zombie 2" in most of Europe (as "Voodoo, Schreckensinsel der Zombies" (Voodoo, Horror Island of Zombies) in Germany, and "Zombie Flesh Eaters" in the UK) due to the popularity of Dawn of the Dead, which was released as "Zombie" by Argento. So they wanted to capitalize on that.

Yeah, that I know, but it was a sequel in the sense that it carried the same name and was capitalizing on Dawn's success.

Heheh, okay, I'll admit my understanding of the exact history is foggy though. I kinda figured that.

I thought Zombi(e) 2 by Lucio Fulci, was originally supposed to be a sequel to dawn of the dead, but the studios made them change the name and advertising because Day of the Dead was in production already.

I think that's pretty much just something that people have said over the years, and now it's taken as fact. If anything, if you go by the story's timeline, it should be a prequel, not a sequel, since it shows how the zombies came about.
