Metallica Live

Recommended Posts

OK, bumping this, because I just received some very exciting news. I've been a Metallica Club member for several years now because I'm a big fan and I've gotten some cool stuff but in my email box arrived this today:

Congratulations!!  You are the lucky winner of something every Met Club

member covets - the meet and greet pass!  You have won one pass for the

show on Oct 17 Washington, DC MCI Center.

WHOA, I did not expect to ever win one, but here it is. So, I will be going backstage before the show to meet the band and get a couple things autographed. I guess I'm basically bragging but I'm seriously excited about this. :headbang:

The 19th?

Nah man, I got Floor for the show on the 20th in Philly.

Floor is awesome, that is all.

And I'm not a huge Metallica fan, I like some of their songs so I figured I'd see them once. Plus, Enter Sandman live kicks all kinds of ass I am told.

I give enough of my money to Lars, I'm sure he'll manage. Hell I can tell him sorry personally when I meet him in DC! :P

Yeah, but what about JAMES Slap? Did you think about him??

You know he's a sensitive soul. He'll never be able to handle it. He'll be sobbing into the mic at Philly!

Just got back!!! :headbang:

Oh my god, was that awesome in every way.

First, the Meet and Greet: Got to meet all 4 (one at a time), and they took some time with each person to sign, take a picture and chat. I got all 4 to sign my St. Anger cd case (Rob and Kirk on the front, James and Lars on the inside), and my white 2001 Metclub T-shirt.

Rob was up first, and shorter than I thought he'd be but with HUGE arms. I asked him if he remembered making "Degradation Trip" with Jerry Cantrell, and he said he did and it was awesome. I asked what Jerry's up to, and he said he's finally gotten himself healthy because he was in rough shape (didn't know this! ) and he's ready to make new music. He struck his crazy metal horn pose with me, and I thanked him.

Kirk was next up, and as he signed St. Anger, I said the only that would make it better would be some Kirk Hammet solos, he said: "next album, I promise." Sweet. I also joked with him about their recent appearence on The Jane Pauly show, (Kirk showed her how to play a powerchord on a guitar at the end), and I asked if she's joining the band, and he said "maybe as a backup singer".

James was next and he is larger than life. I'm a short person and he's pretty tall, but his whole presence is just huge. He was very nice though, and I asked him about the Presideo recordings they did before they recorded St. Anger that I heard would be released as a soundtrack to the Some Kind Of Monster movie, but he said they decided they shouldn't be released that way and they need to stand on their own. I said I'd love to hear them some day, to hear the outtakes, but he quickly corrected "they're not outtakes, they're full songs", so I commented I liked the song "Temptation" that plays in the movie, and he said he "loved" that one.

Lars was last and of course made us wait (we could have caught Godsmack if he didn't take so long!) but once he came in he was all smiles and very nice to everyone always making eye contact and asking everyone how they were. I asked if there were any suprises on tonight's setlist and he said "oh yeah, there's one suprise", which got me quite excited (ended up being The God That Failed), and told him I'd be at the show in Philly on Tuesday, so to play lots of new and different songs that day, so he started joking "ok, just for YOU! We'll play different songs for you". Amazing that it all passed so quickly, but definitely on awesome experience.

Arrived just at the end of Godsmack's set, so I can't really comment on them. Metallica though was flat out unbelievable. This is my third time seeing them and it was by far the best. They just had so much energy on the stage it was unreal. The setlist was awesome too, maybe the best they've ever played. They played for a long time too, and after Enter Sandman when they were just throwing out picks and it looked like it was over, a lot of people cleared out, then all of a sudden they start jamming again and James starts making fun of the "people who went to their cars to beat the traffic. You can't get rid of Metallica that easy!" and they busted out Disposable Heroes and Seek and Destroy as encores. Excellent show, had an amazing time. I can't wait to develop the pictures. Here's the setlist:

Blackened

Fuel

Sad But True

No Leaf Clover

Ride The Lightning

The Unforgiven

The God That Failed

St. Anger

I Disappear

Creeping Death

Fight Fire With Fire

--------

Fade To Black

Nothing Else Matters

Master Of Puppets

One

Enter Sandman

--------

Disposable Heroes

Seek And Destroy

This fills me with hope and joy about Wednesday. Rockin my ass out to some Godsmack and Metallica.

And I'm not leaving for 30 minutes after the show so I'll stand there all damn night until I'm told to leave.

One question, does Enter Sandman sound as awesome live as I think it will?

Everything sounded great, they has the most energy I've ever seen them play with. Enter Sandman by far got the biggest "pop", its like the Hulk Hogan of Metallica songs, it's not the best, its kind of old after so many times, but its still awesome to see/hear live and will get a huge reaction every time. :P

I can't wait, I get to go see them on Nov. 28 in San Jose. First time seeing Godsmack and Metallica live, I really can't wait. But let me ask, for any of the concerts that you guys went to, did they use the wrestling set up and if they did how does that work?

I don't know what you mean "wrestling setup" (no they didn't play in a ring!). It was center stage like a basketball court. Here are some pics of the stage setup that should give you an idea:

They are using a hocky rink, so I can see the reason. Either I'm thinking it'll be a round stage in the middle but that wouldn't make any sense unless there only using half the building or the enterance area is their stage and the ring area is for the techies. But otherwise i'm confused by it.

Just got back from the show in Philadelphia! So awesome once again. I got to see Godsmack's full set this time (on account of, ya know, not getting to hang out with the band again! :P ) and they were very good. The extended double drum solo thing they do is breath taking. Really, really cool. Crowd was into them and all their big hits and Sully is an excellent frontman and reminded me of James with his interactions with the crowds.

Not much new to say about Metallica. It was basically the same show as DC, which is good because that show kicked so much ass, but I was looking forward to a few more setlist changes. King Nothing, Leper Messiah and Wherever I May Roam were new. If it wasn't sold out I'd probably attempt to go to the second Philly show tommorow. Oh well, I guess life can't be all Metallica concerts (why not?). Here's the set:

Blackened

Fuel

Leper Messiah

Wherever I May Roam

King Nothing

The unforgiven

God That Failed

St. Anger

Fade To Black

Master Of Puppets

Fight Fire With Fire

I won a meet and greet back for the Pittsburgh show back in September through the MetClub.

Was the best night of my life...got to meet the band, and out of the 4 times I have seen Metallica, they were just on that night, full of energy and just happy to be playing. Best show I ever saw. They played Disposable Heores(which was rare at the time, but has been played often since), and that was an awesome suprise..

DEAR GOD THAT ROCKED MY F'N WORLD!

No "Fade to Black" or "St. Anger" but god damn, it didn't matter. The show kicked my ass from side to side and then up and down. Two and a half hours of Metallica complete with the nice goodbye is just awesome (see the scene from SOME KIND OF MONSTER where they line up and wave, that one).

Got myself a pick from James, could have had three if my ass had been faster since they were under my damn foot. Oh well, live and learn.

It was hot, it was loud, I nearly passed out and I loved every f'n SECOND of it. If anyone tries to tell you Metallica doesn't put on an awesome show, slap them.

And holy HELL, when they are about to start "One"....they empty the special effects budget. I'm talking five minutes of firework blasts that are hot and loud and just set the mood to perfection. Got my gf a nice 30 dollar t-shirt (christ, that was high but I expected it) and managed to get an item she'll want more than the shirt.

Overall, if these crazy f*ckers EVER come within 100 miles of me...hell 200 miles of me, I am buying the GA ticket and getting my eardrums blown from my head again.

Hey Slap, did they bring out a group called "Breaking the chair" at the first Philly show?

A group of 9 and 10 year olds who can play SEEK AND DESTROY?

No, those kids weren't at the first show, but I saw the pics of them at Metontour.com

You got an AWESOME setlist man, I really wish they would have played that the first night. DYERS EVE, 'nuff said. You are truly blessed to have heard that live. I was hoping one of the 2 nights I was going they'd bust it out, but oh well.

Yes, the pyro for One is amazing, and you got to love the soundbytes from Full Metal Jacket they used too.

Remember to check www.livemetallica.com to buy a live recording of your show! :D

I'm very skeptical about this thread and it's show reviews. I've heard some recent live Metallica stuff and it sounds like they keep ridiculous effects on the guitars all the time...and the St.Anger drums. Also from what I've heard recently, James' voice has completely gone to hell. I don't want that Metallica, I want the Metallica from 98 when they've sold out, but still play their songs with few effects and gimmickry and completely crush everything due to big money sound presentation.

I don't want James to use the stage persona of a folk rock christian with all the "We're so happy to be here...with you" stuff before and after they play Creeping Death. Cleaning up has given him new life, and he has all my respect for doing that, but support group banter between songs has to go.

22 years is a good run for sure, considering the band can still tour quite regularly, but I won't bother seeking them out if they water down their songs with effects and good will. I don't want good will leading into Master Of Puppets, I don't want "happy to be here" when going into Whiplash or Sad But True. I want my ass kicked like in 98 when they had that balance between the old and the new songs and it all laid waste to an entire stadium while the band played hungry like a bunch of 19 year olds looking to crack a headlining spot.

They're the ultimate Love Hate relationship.

I saw them in January and James' voice was fantastic, about as good as heard on their S&M live album. His voice may have deterriorated since then, but I know that, when I saw them, I was surprised how well James' voice had improved since hearing it on St. Anger.

The only time James said "Happy to be here" was...well the end. When they were done and thanking Philly for two nights of shows.

Otherwise, he was cursing his ass off and partying like crazy. Kinda odd, I didn't expect it from him but he was just having a good time.

He did say they were inspired by the group of kids, but DAMN I was inspired. A seven year old who can play the opening to Seek and Destroy perfectly inspired me. I thought I didn't do enough with my life.

Red Hot, you're missing out, that's all I can say. I think what you've heard is false and skewed your judgement. James doesn't do any "support group" chat, unless you consider thanking the fans and getting them into a song, which all bands do. Their play sounded as tight as ever, especially compared to when I saw them last year and 3 years ago. The old school songs still crunch, and the only effects were Kirk's wah-wah which he's used since the Black Album. Lars' drums sound nothing like St. Anger, (even when the play St. Anger), and he gains so much respect being 40 and keeping up a frantic (excuse the pun!) pase for nearly 3 hours. James' voice sounded the best its been in years. They are one of the most amazing live bands out there, and if you deny yourself a chance to see them because of petty 2nd hand excuses, you're only cheating yourself.

Agree, I have the first album and his voice is sounding awesome. The only special effects they used for a song was the opening to "One", which the song actually has anyway so it was too be expected. The occasion fire blast but Godsmack had one of those per song almost.

The guitar solos are pretty bad ass.

I'm going again, even if I have to fly to New Mexico and drag my gf out of school for it. I doubt she'll mind.
