Guest Anglesault Report post Posted May 16, 2004 Plus Damon has made a deal with Gillette, who are going to pay him a certain amount of $$$$ to shave off the beard and hair for charity. Knowing that it's in Boston, it's probably the Jimmy Fund. What a classless dick he is, indeed. I heard just the beard. Charity notwithstanding, we can't risk the hair. He may have developed a Samson complex, and we do want the Red Sox in the World Series, do we not? Because it worked so well the last time Damon refused to cut his hair... Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted May 16, 2004 If the Red Sox trade both Damon and Kim, pick up Beltran, and don't pay any part of Damon or Kim's remaining contracts they actually cut payroll this season. Even if they sign Beltran to an extension next season where he makes roughly $14mill a season they would only be adding $1mill of payroll compared to keeping both Damon and Kim. Its a good financial deal for the Red Sox
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 But they'll need to replace Kim somehow. That will cost money.
Cartman 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 Kim has been replaced... Just look at yesterday's starter. Sure he's not a stud or anything, but he has really good stuff and control. Decent #5 starter. Heck, if anything he's the #4 now since Lowe looks like trash thus far.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 Yes, but Kim's under contract fairly cheaply for next year. Pedro and Lowe are free agents. So the Sox have Schilling, Wakefield, Arroyo, and Kim for next year. Let Kim go, and the Sox will need to replace him next season.
Cartman 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 Well I still believe Pedro will sign eventually despite what's been said already. Lowe is gone as far as i'm concerned, so really they only have to replace Lowe...and if Matt Clement isn't signed I would LOVE him here Oh and 5 mil isn't so cheap for a guy who lost his velocity and control severely... The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 ...and if Matt Clement isn't signed I would LOVE him here Sorry, Cartman, but Matt Clement and his chin beard are both staying on the north side, where he is doing a great great job of holding up the fort hwilst Prior is out and Maddux is shaky. What an improvement.
Cartman 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 Can they afford to keep him? I mean you gotta lose someone when you have high quality like Wood, Madduz, Prior, Zambrano, Clement, Sosa, etc...
Bored 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 I can't confirm this since I read it on another board. ESPN Insider and Baseball Weekly apparantly both are reporting a rumor between the Cubs and Royals where Beltran goes to the Cubs for Corey Patterson and Kyle Farnsworth. I'm officially with Al, just let him go three free agency and pick up the draft picks if these rumors are the best they can come up with.

The Cubs could probably afford most anybody they really wanted to. The Tribune Company just doesn't free-wheel with the checkbook like the Yankees do. Their payroll is high though. And you forget that guys like Prior, Zambrano, and Patterson are still pretty cheap because they just don't have the years of service for arbitration eligibility or anything like that. I can't confirm this since I read it on another board. ESPN Insider and Baseball Weekly apparantly both are reporting a rumor between the Cubs and Royals where Beltran goes to the Cubs for Corey Patterson and Kyle Farnsworth. That works for me, but only if they sign Beltran to a multi-year deal before the trade is executed, or at least have an agreement with Beltran on a contract offer. Carlos Beltran with the Cubs? No more Farnsworth? This is too good to pass up! I'm all for it. Part of me is worried about how '03's Wrigley rejects, Estes and Choi, have gone on to be good for their new teams, but since the Royals are in the AL and I don't really mind the team, I wouldn't be too annoyed if Patterson became a star there. As for Farnsworth, I don't think he's included to equalize the trade value, I think he's included because it's an opportunity to get him off our hands. sfaJack 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 Estes GOOD?? 6.70 ERA, .284 BA against him, 20 BB's and only 19 K's is GOOD? As I said, I'd be for this trade too, but only if they sign Beltran long-term as part of the deal. What's the point of trading Patterson if you have no one to replace him with if Beltran walks away? Farnsworth could get smacked by the El tomorrow and I wouldn't be that upset. The only downside would be that that might bring about the return of Michael Wurtz, who is worse. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2004 The scary thing is that they have two guys in their rotation WORSE than Estes. And as far as Beltran, Big Unit, etc. go, these teams are MUCH better off going for draft picks.
sfaJack 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2004 Al, do you think it might ever be possible to build a consistent winner in Colorado (not a one-year fluke)? I don't know if it ever could happen...that place is just too dangerous for pitchers.

I don't know if it ever could happen...that place is just too dangerous for pitchers. I believe its possible. Many of the Rockies teams lately would suck at any altitude. The pitching is a problem, but teams have won before at extreme hitters parks. I think if you were to plug a top team into Coors, they'd still win. It comes down to talent, and the lack thereof hurts the Rockies more than the altitude.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2004 On the philliesphans message board, the ball is starting to roll on a Byrd/Floyd for Beltran trade rumor. IIRC, this is where the Nomar/Abreu talks started in the winter. I wonder if this one will have the same legs. Side note: how shitty does that trade look in hindsight? Two gimps (one in his contract year) for Abreu who is having an all star season.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted May 18, 2004 And as far as Beltran, Big Unit, etc. go, these teams are MUCH better off going for draft picks. D-Backs aren't getting anything soon for Randy Johnson. He's still got 2 more years on his deal. This year and next they have to pay him $16mill. They'd be better off trading him and grabbing some good young talent while saving the $28mill they probably still owe him on the contract.
sfaJack 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2004 Randy Johnson has a no-trade clause. I think I'd be surprised if he waived it.

Two gimps (one in his contract year) for Abreu who is having an all star season. The Nomar/Abreu trade looked shitty at the time as well. Byrd/Floyd for Beltran would be terrible. I don't know why Phillies fans are obsessed with upgrading center field. Beltran is not so much better than Byrd as to justify the extra $10 Million he would cost, and that's without throwing Gavin Floyd in the deal.
