Being Fat in America

Recommended Posts

I've been reading this thread and I've seen valid points from all. After a major break-up I gained weight and one day I got sick and tired of it and decided that I was gonna loose the weight. I started eating better and exercising more and to date I've lost over 50lbs and am still loosing weight. My problem with netslob is the fact that he did mention girl problems. Want the truth, women are superficial (just as men are) Sure we see guys that are overweight and think for a second if we woudl really want them, but that's not the only key. If you have enough confidence in yourself and your personality you can win over any girl regardless of your size. If you have this mindset that you are a pathetic fat slob then yes, it's very hard to get a girl to like and date you. However, if you actually talk to them and show them there is alot more to than what is on the outside, then some will ignore the weight issue. You have to want to loose the weight for yourself, and yourself alone. Once you get committed to losing the weight, it's all about self-discipline. Eat smaller portions, exercise more, eat healthier foods. Sure every one and a while eat something you really like (like fast food or desserts) but don't make a habit out of it. Reward yourself at times.

Reward yourself at times.

Nope. That's exactly the mindset you have to avoid. I wanted to lose 15 lbs a couple of years ago and I started thinking in terms of "rewards," seeing a dessert on the weekend as something to look forward to after the "punishment" of a week of dieting and exercise. Surprise! A month later I'd gained 5 lbs instead of losing 15. I reassessed my priorities and found other ways to reward myself - a day at the spa, a weekend of horseriding, ridiculously expensive facials, and the completely gratuitous and unprovoked aggravation of various Democrat officials - and I lost all 20 the next month. I've never since thought of indulging myself as a "reward." It isn't. Appetite, like fear, is a slave that longs to be a master.

NB. Any mods who think it's funny to edit my posts without my permission, kindly take a flying leap into a trash compactor before you ever even dream of doing it again. I don't find it amusing and I will not tolerate it. You will take your toys somewhere else and you will play with them somewhere else, preferably very far away from me, is that clear?

anything ingrained since childhood is quite difficult to change

True, but while Frasier is a Freudian, I am a Jungian. So there'll be no blaming Mother today.

the ones who are usually the harshest on fat folks are the ones who used to be fat themselves, which probably shows they carried some self loathing

Of course, since self-loathing is a natural consequence of feeling unattractive and unhealthy. I'm not speaking from personal experience here, since the heaviest I've ever been in my life is 130 lbs and I had a pretty darn good opinion of my looks even then, but it's psychologically obvious that any residual self-loathing would be displaced to anyone whose appearance provided triggers for unpleasant memories or emotions.

drop all that emotional shit and just lose weight or don't

Exactly.

The goal should always be the actual weight loss. But let's say you have been dieting and exercising for a solid two months and then a party or family gathering comes about. I believe it's perfectly acceptable to eat something like (just don't over eat or stuff your face full of shit)

Oh absolutely. As you said, as long as you don't overeat you can always make up for going off your diet later. The key is to avoid associating food with emotion - guilt and pleasure are equally dangerous. I never refuse interesting food if I'm at a party, even if I'm watching my weight. I just work it off afterwards.

Alcohol's a killer, too. I lost a good amount of my weight just cutting out the beer.

I think a big problem that made me gain weight and something I've managed to cut out now is eating when I'm bored.

I'd get bored and have nothing to do so then I'd think I'm hungry. So I'd go and eat.

Nowadays I just get busy with work and school. And if I have nothing else to do I do what I'm doing right now. Make it to where you only have time for your 3 meals a day and nothing else.

See, that's one thing I could never do. I think I get the majority of my calories from alcohol these days.

I quit for very good reasons other than my weight, that was just a pleasant side-effect. If I still wanted to drink, there's no way I'd quit for a diet.

It's a weird thing about willpower.. I get high still, but then I manage not to raid the kitchen afterwards. Sometimes I actually exercise, since THC's a bronchial dilator and all. Oh well. No calories in a joint or a cigarette.

Has smoking weed regularly had any effect on your body weight wise like beer has?

Not at all. I'm what's called a chronic pothead, but a functional addict in the respect that I can still do things like work and drive and think and talk without saying "yeah" a lot.

Basically, I've had pot in my system pretty steadily since my mid teens, and I've lost all my weight in the past five or six years. I'm 22 now. So technically, I've gotten thinner since using it heavily, though the two are unrelated.

Edit: But what if they're not...perhaps I could start a new diet revolution.

Fuck you Atkins, Hello Doctor Pot.

I guess all my buddies should have cut back on the munchies then. I can remember them complaining about the bitch tits they were developing back when they were heavy tokers.

When I smoked weed I was still able to function and after I regained my senses back a bit more, I would hit the gym afterwards instead of pigging out with my reefer head cohorts.

I tend to do most of my stretching and stuff of that nature before bed, when I'm really pretty high, and all those capillaries are blown wide open. It makes a difference, I think.

Yeah speaking of the Atkins Diet and all these new diet revolutions....it's pissing me off.

I mean all these obese people are blaming McDonalds for why they're fat and now McDonalds is changing it's menu to compensate. Well.......IT'S NOT McD's FAULT! IT'S YOUR FAULT! NOBODY FORCED YOU TO BUY IT!

I mean god damn it's starting piss people like me off. I work out all the time and if I want to go eat a fricking super sized Big Mac meal.....then I'm going to eat a fricking super sized Big Mac meal. Hell if I was a 400 pound obese rhino that couldn't get out of my car without panting then and I wanted 3 super sized Big Mac meals.....then I'm going to eat 3 super sized Big Mac meals and it'll be MY fault. I don't want McDonalds babysitting me.

That Atkins thing is a racket, too. A plot by the meat-packing industry, I think. Either that, or else the government not wanting people to have the energy to revolt.

Has anyone tried any of those sugar free fake chocolate craps that are being sold now? I was given some, and it looked and tasted exactly like the chocolate described in 1984.

I was watching this morning the director of the film "Super Size Me" and thinking this guy is a douchebag. He said when people started suing McDonald's he said he thought it was a stupid lawsuit but changed his opinion when McDonald's claimed their food was healthly. So in this film he eats nothing but McDonald's for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 30 straight days. Of course the fucker gained 24lbs in 30 days, but what got me was he said it was addicting and the people can't help but buy more. He said he got headaches and they only went away when he ate McDonald's. What really kills me are the little kids that are fat and the parents blame McDonald's. You gave into them, you drove them to McDonald's, you ordered them whatever they wanted, you paid for it, your kid ate it and you stood by and watched and it's McDonald's fault your kid is fucking fat? Gimme a damn break.

He ate the same thing at McDonald's for a month. A Big Mac meal with a coke. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

And I have a hard time packing on weight unless I also due the protein powders and shit and start lifting (which I was doing in high school.. don't have time lately).

With the running I do (not just after the daughter) and high metabolism I can eat junk all day and not gain a pound. Since I have pretty much no body fat I look smaller than I actually am ( 5' 10" about 170ish).

Gotta get with Sass and work out.

AoO, you're open about being a smoker and it doesn't seem as though you're proud of it.

Instead of spending time criticising those that find it difficult to lose weight... Because let's face it, it's no easy task... Not that I can talk, but why don't you spend that time instead trying to quit smoking?

On the contrary, I love to smoke. I know it's unhealthy, I just don't care.

Well, in the case...

Good on you. It's nice to see someone for a change that's not pissing and moaning about how they should quit smoking.

I love to do it too.

No matter how hard I try, I cannot picture MrRant as a skinny person. It's like a reflex. I read "MrRant," I think "Newman."

MrRant: Skinny? No. Newman.

Wayne Knight actually isn't fat anymore.

Well, not compared to what he was. I didn't think that he could or would lose weight, so good on him.

Before:

After:

Now he just looks like a nerd. I wonder if now when you (generally speaking) think of him, you'll picture the new him?

He ate the same thing at McDonald's for a month. A Big Mac meal with a coke. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The thing is though, the guy who was conducting the "study" knew what results he wanted to get. Regardless of what he ate he would be far more likely to do no exercise and hence put on weight, even if it is a subconscious thing.

Also, if you're gonna eat the same fucking thing EVERYDAY of course you're gonna get adverse side effects. I could eat lean steak with potatoe and a glass of water everyday (lets call it the "healthy equivilent of a Bigmac, fries and a coke) and my body would totally kick my ass for it. Infact, you're more likely to have a healthier diet with the big mac option due to increase of carbs and vitamins.

un-fat people are less funny too. Probably for all the wrong reasons.

There is indeed a lot of pressure to look a certain way, but only if you allow it to become pressure. I have weighed in excess of 380 lbs at times and have weighed as little as 180 lbs -- this is all in the six years since I've graduated high school. My weight has fluctuated a lot and that's probably more unhealthy than maintaining any weight. That said, I'm looking to find a weight where I'm comfortable.

As much as I hate to say it, because the truth is very painful, Marney and AoO are right on. At my heaviest, my greatest fear was the truth. My greatest fear was someone judging me because I was fat or telling me I was fat, yet now, I wish someone would have because it would have motivated me to take action sooner. I knew the truth, but hearing it from someone else would devastate me. Being that delusional and insecure is incredibly dangerous, but I'm afraid I was.

Right now, I'll just say I'm heavier than I want to be and leave it at that. That said, I'm also doing something about it. I do love food, and that's something that will never change. But, as Marney said, I've had to learn to stop associating food with emotion.

It's much harder to lose weight than it is to overcome other addictions. A drug addict can stop snorting or puffing or injecting. An alcoholic can stop drinking. A fat person can't stop eating; they can only control the amount they eat. That said, expecting society to conform to you is every bit as selfish as judging fat people is shallow, and it's the mindset I had for many years.

You have to learn to find things that interest you in life and truly make those things your passions and your reasons for living. Being overweight reflects a lack of self discovery, a lack of knowing who you are and what makes you happy. Food can be comforting and can make one happy, but as I've already said, that's an incredibly dangerous trap.

Think about your favorite foods and why they're your favorite foods. Does chocolate cake excite you because it reminds you of your childhood because your mother used to make it? Do nachos excite you because you used to eat them with Dad when you'd go to baseball games? Is eating out something you enjoy because you enjoy the company? If so, you're reliving good moments of your life through food, which means that you're associating the wrong things with the wrong things. It's all mental and once you conquer that side of it, the rest is easy as pie, or as easy to resist as pie, perhaps I should say.

Learning self control is hard. It's hard to ever realize just how in control of your own destiny you really are. I think the people who grasp this the most are the people who are the happiest and most successful in life. You can change anything you want to change, just as you can accept anything you choose to accept. It's that outlook that makes life so enriching.
